Fathers and Daughters

Bringing good old-fashioned Mediterranean emotion to a screenplay that feels oh so familiar, this modern-day weepie unapologetically plays to the crowd rather than the critics.

Objectively speaking, it’s garbage, a suffocating mix of dad redemption, not-ready-for-Mr.-Right romance, and a bogus lit-world success story, with mental illness, slobs-vs.-snobs legal drama, and an Electra complex thrown in for flavor. On that level, it’s as shameless as porn.

While Fathers and Daughters has a strong cast (including a brief appearance by Jane Fonda), it largely saddles them with one-dimensional roles and too-obvious emotional cues.

Pair Fathers and Daughters with a bottle of wine and a friend on a rainy night, and it will work just fine.

No amount of star power can save the script by Brad Desche.

This turkey is too clumsy and boring to make much of a ripple in the summer landscape.

The film's weird reformulation of the Electra complex is nothing short of a sexist fantasy of salvation.

I did not want to write a review, but the last scene of the film made me do it. The hero of the film received a Pulitzer Prize! So that's what this movie is about. The worthless scribbler tried to fulfill his dream at least in the cinema. But he does not understand that in drama, talent is no less important. The whole film is the barren attempts of a mediocre person. How am I tired of these ignoramuses crawling into the cinema from all the cracks.
