Faces of Death gives the people what they want while constantly probing the viewer as to why they want it, all the way through to an ending as bleak as the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

On one hand, Goldhaber’s film is a terrifying, stark, oppressive horror film that outscares the other modern slashers. On the other it’s an intelligent treatise on the grim obsession we have with being obsessively grim.

A script/plot in need of a rewrite, a bit generic with some eye-rolling character decisions at times. However, I was absolutely riveted for most of the movie, with heart-pounding tension and fantastic performances from Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferrera. While the movie maybe could be slightly more "scary" or gory, it still felt very intense with a slight edge of dark comedy that prevented the movie from feeling pretentious. If you love the original Faces of Death, or cat-and-mouse serial killer thrillers, it's well worth a watch imo. Maybe not as emotionally resonate as HTBUAP, but Daniel Goldhaber proves once again he has the directing juice! I can't believe that this almost was never released, shame on you Legendary for taking this long to sell it off or release it.

Good, unique premise and delivery, the horror genre really has the legs to support anything.

It’s both a canny contemporary riff on the material and a well-made but only moderately scary slasher.

Faces of Death is “ambitious” trash, with the courage of its own gaudy thematic grandiloquence.

It’s not badly executed, but there’s nothing scary or clever enough to set it apart from similar films beyond the Faces of Death connection, a throwback meta cloak wrapped around a merely good-enough modern horror movie.

It’s reasonably effective, with Ferreira appealing in the lead role and Montgomery very creepy as the copycat killer who would have benefited from a more wholesome media diet.

Faces of Death is dull and thoughtless, its attempts to smash influencer culture into voyeurism feeling artificial.

Because if there's anything that's comparable to an infamous shockumentary that tricked so many people into thinking its kills were real, it's a really stupid horror movie that isn't even shocking enough to get into unrated territory. Cool killer though.

Dacre Montgomery is the sole reason I give this anything above a zero. Toned down, slow, and unrealistic. This attempt to reboot a long-dead series fails to spark anything other than boredom.

If Hollywood keeps making movies like this they will go bankrupt. Not watching. Not explaining. Not apologizing.
