Oh boy, here we go...
It's generic and predictable. It's understandable that this film is targeted at the South African Audience, which includes myself, but this film doesn't even come close to the great family road trip movies out there. It attempts to draw you in with some empathetic movements, but it's not filmed or written well enough. There isn't enough conflict to convey that the father is right because he is trying to juggle work and personal life. And this film also makes the SAPS a joke, which I think is pretty bad. As for the rest of the characters, they are annoying, every single one of them, even the 8-year-old kid meant to serve as comedic relief. Then there is the way the film is shot, it's just bad, none of the shots convey any emotion, or tell me what the person of focus is feeling.
It's empty. If I had to describe it. It's like the film was shot with a really good iPhone camera with no effects or camera work whatsoever. But did I ****, not once, the film did not grip me, or gain my attention. Understand that I watch films I don't expect to be good while I do some programming. And only those that are interesting gain my attention. There are no good uses of callbacks in the film, and the callbacks that are there are used too fast, or are not explained/shown well. Overall, I think I can write, and direct something better, or at least know what a film needs to be better.
I don't recommend this film, it's quite forgettable and typical of the SA Film Industry. I guess I'm only looking forward to a film by Neill Blomkamp that has a 7 in it. Anyway 5/10, I'm sure somebody in SA will like it, I however am not easily won over. I recommend making a film that everyone can enjoy with a tailored personality, you need to show it in your film, because if you don't, it just becomes a homemade video.
