It’s a laugh riot, with the potential to go down as one of the decade’s smartest and funniest comedies.

“Dicks” can’t maintain that level of performative thrust all the way through; it sags a bit in the middle, as one might expect from making the considerable jump from the stage and through the hoops of major revisions. But the film bounces back toward its back nine.

You ever watch something, enjoy it for the most part with the exception of one super weird scene, keep enjoying it, then get to the last 15 minutes which just become total nonsense and you're left scratching your head at how you actually felt about the whole thing? Yeah uh...That's this. I had fun watching it but even now I am completely unsure if I enjoyed it for the "right" reasons or not. What a weird little passion project this was. The kind of film somebody could tell me they loved it and I'd say, "that's fair", and then turn around and say the exact same thing to someone who said they hated it.

Stating that a film isn't for everyone doesn't necessarily mean you'll be entirely repelled by the material and yet ****: The Musical feels so devoid of meaning and so dull that, in my view, it never ascends and does nothing to escape its pit of mediocrity.

Sure, the story hangs on by the thinnest of threads, it loses momentum in the second act, and one or two of the songs are just a bit too repetitive. Then again, you’ll laugh. Likely a lot.

Dicks: The Musical is never as outrageous as it clearly would like to be . . . But its determination to avoid any trace of self-importance or greater meaning is admirable in its own right — embracing the freedom to just be ridiculous.

Dicks: The Musical is a decidedly big swing and a genuinely weird take on the musical that has its moments, but also feels a bit stretched too thin given its concept.

You can’t accuse Dicks: The Musical of phoning in a half-assed take on material that demands you bring the big-dick energy or GTFO. But there’s a big difference between being loud and rude and being hilarious, cutting, or even clever. The movie keeps it up for a good long while. It could just use a few more inches.

Dicks is so in love with itself and its own overworked kooky world that it treats the audience like the outsider in a threesome. Sometimes the self is the least interesting part of self-expression.

Larry Charles is a comedy master (producer on Seinfeld & Curb Your Enthusiasm and director of Brüno). I can only guess that he convinced stars Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally that this would be his next outrageous success. Imagine their (and our) disappointment when this film turned into an excessive embarrassment .The plot involves 2 salesmen (writers Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp) who discover they are long-lost identical twins and plan to reunite of their divorced parents (Lane & Mullally). Everything about this film is exaggerated to the point of eye-rolling (Megan Thee Stallion is their sexy boss & Bowen Yang as God). The culmination of appalling was Lane's affection for the Sewer Boys (don't ask). The filmmakers chose to subtitle all of the lyrics, many of which feature sex acts and genitalia in profusion. The songs themselves were unmemorable and the comedy is blown out over the top. Lane even said in an outtake during the credits that this was a low point in his career. Agreed.
