The film supplies a headlong rush of tension and cruelty all the way to a gratifying final payoff.

What's the opposite of a jump scare? Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa has mastered it in the superb Creepy, revealing the upsetting details with such slow-build subtlety that you don't notice your skin crawling until it's halfway out the door.

Together with the camera’s constantly creeping pans and dollies — as well as the bilious green tinge that permeates each frame — the film thus generates a sense of unease that intensifies very gradually and unremittingly, reaching an extreme pitch by the time of its denouement.

Creepy uses silence as a tool of terror, following its characters through long, tense scenes where everything’s a little too quiet, and where each creak sounds like a scream. The director has always excelled at making the ordinary seem unsettling.

As a character, Yasuko feels a bit underdeveloped, resulting in a late-film character turn that I didn’t quite buy, but every narrative issue in Creepy is overwhelmed by the quality of the filmmaking.

There are few surprises in Creepy. With the exception of a bleak, pointed ending, it all plays out as you’d expect. That’s not necessarily a criticism – it’s fun to watch the pieces click into place, and the film is never less than slick, well-acted and nice looking.

Uneven, convoluted and laden with far too many twists and turns Creepy sadly struggles to balance both terror and suspense, with any intrigue dissipating long before the film's secrets are eventually unravelled.

Not often you get to see a plot where one of the main characters deceives himself in such an obvious way without even knowing it. Creepy deals with the story of a murderer/imposter, who happens to be the neighbor of the lead couple. As viewers we clearly have the added insight of knowing that there's something strange about that neighbor, though perhaps as normal people we wouldn't be comfortable believing that our neighbor is a dangerous person, however, Hidetoshi Nishijima's character is a serial killer profiler and he simply cannot see the danger until it's already too late. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's thriller has several plot issues, but he manages to keep the tension going even when there are really no surprises in it.
The script certainly doesn't allow for much exploration for the characters, but the performances are very good and are also part of what keeps the mystery developing enough to keep you completely interested to see where it's going and more importantly, how it will end. Creepy uses the overused next door maniac trope, but manages to give it identity and more thrust than anything else.
Not everything feels right and its ending isn't really fulfilling. Let's just say that the door to immeasurable evil was opened, but its director preferred not to delve into it, choosing to keep the emphasis on his lead couple rather than his monster. Nevertheless, the thriller is quite good.
