Cowboys is a film that relaxes into its ideas and themes, and the performances from Knight, Zahn and Bell – with Ann Dowd as the cop on Troy’s trail – are all tremendous.

Despite the film’s compact length, it contains a wealth of tense action, complex emotion, deft observations, vital messaging and gorgeous vistas.

There is plenty to like about director Anna Kerrigan's film Cowboys. Its (near) family-friendly pitch on transgender issues is refreshing. Its uncluttered presentation is disarmingly frank.

Everyone on-screen holds fear in their hearts because they think the complexity of the situation is beyond their means. The question is whether they’re willing to try anyway.

The observant nature of this character drama offers Zahn in particular the opportunity to expand into new territory. He hasn’t lost the spaciness that once made him a lovable comedic sidekick, but here fatherhood endows that same charm with pathos, even tragedy.

Cowboys nonetheless gets by on goodwill and a passion for compromised Americana. Only a lowdown dirty heel would cuss it out.

Comic actors Steve Zahn and Jillian Bell are uncharacteristically earnest in this achingly well-intentioned but thuddingly heavy-handed family drama.

Como filme independiente, aborda de manera correcta un asunto sensible como la confusión de género y la aceptación del mismo, sin juicios morales de ninguna índole. Es lo más que se podría decir.

(Mauro Lanari)
The initial impact is deceptive: the "Brokeback Mountain" prequel? It is enough to give "Cowboys" just a few more minutes to change your mind and understand that we are faced with one of the increasingly sporadic cases in which indie cinema is still an added value, a crowd-pleaser movie that the Academy will never reward because it ostracizes this nonconformist type of cinema which instead is decisive to instill credibility and honest delicacy to the moving identity crisis of the 3 belonging to a family unit of a remote community on the border with Canada. Anna Kerrigan does not linger on events and concisely tells a story cleansed of any tinsel and imbued with an irresistible candor.
