(Mauro Lanari)
How credible is Jennifer Lawrence, now a 32-year-old world star, when in 2019 she felt the need to self-produce in this movie that sends her back to a character and a cinema similar to those of her indie debuts, "Winter's Bone" above all? Lila Neugebauer in her first feature film tries to manage JLaw as she can, in a path of survival from traumas suffered and responsibilities denied in war as in the family. Normally the psychophysical rehabilitation strategy is mutual support and in fact here we end up with the meeting of two peripheral and marginal solitudes. A few less clichés would have helped, for example her gender fluidity.

Top of their game, Jennifer and Brian. Beautiful film. Nola looking beautiful.

Strong performances and dialogue, the setting and pacing is very dull though, unfortunately.

Healing from a tragedy can be a difficult, lonely existence. Which is why it sometimes helps to have not only caregivers but also companions to come along for the journey, particularly if they’re recovering from tragedies of their own. That’s the premise behind this low-key drama that tells the story of a traumatically injured Afghan War veteran (Jennifer Lawrence) who seeks to recuperate and get her life back together in her native New Orleans. While there, she meets a kindly, generous auto mechanic (Brian Tyree Henry) who has suffered his own profound misfortunes with whom she strikes up an unlikely friendship. Together they seek to maneuver their way through their respective calamities, some of which extend beyond the incidents that injured them physically. The genuine earnestness of this story is indeed touching, and the performances of the two protagonists are truly stellar, Unfortunately, they’re trapped in woefully underwritten, poorly paced material that, frankly, comes across as thin and dull, despite the picture’s promisingly strong start. What’s more, the film is startlingly unimpressive in the use it makes of its backdrop, portraying New Orleans in a flat, uninspired light. Director Lila Neugebauer’s debut feature tries hard to be sincere and heartfelt but fails on so many fronts. That’s regrettable given the talent, narrative and story setting she has to work with, leaving this production as one that’s easily skipped.

Causeway is not solely a showcase for Jennifer Lawrence’s talent. It is also an interesting study of two people with different pasts and experiences, and how their interactions might be.

A good, simple watch. Nice atmosphere, shot entirely in New Orleans. Doesn't do much to stand out and probably won't be the most memorable watch, but it's a good story.

I wish we had more movies like this one. So powerful in its understatement, and such deep characterization brought to life by two of our finest actors. I rarely give praise like this, where the word "exquisite" comes to mind, but it does: For acting, writing and directing. The supporting cast too, was spot-on. (One scene late in the film just blew me away.) This one's pretty close to perfect. Thank you.

Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry are both simply amazing in this first feature outing for Lila Neugebauer. The film is both understated yet brimming over with an intensity that captivates the viewer. The promise the Lawrence showed in "Winter's Bone" is now in full blossom, and this film only points to even brighter and more poignant performances in her future.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE THE ACTRESS THAT YOU ARE Bryan Tyree Henry is also terrific in this film, I can't believe how good those two were.

Eu sei.

'Causeway' takes Jennifer Lawrence to her 'Winter's Bone' days, although the experience doesn't prove as emotional as striking as that one. Director Lila Neugebauer constructs an extremely low-key story that explores the harrowing thoughts and feelings of a woman burdened by pain. The PTSD theme is distressing at times; Lawrence does a fine job transmitting the exasperation of her character trying to live an everyday life again, but I think it doesn't go that deeper, especially with Brian Tyree Henry's James, who steals the film with minor but powerful interventions. Nevertheless, 'Causeway' minimalist approach suits Lawrence very well, proving that these roles are her thing.

Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry both shine alongside each other here as two strangers who both bond with one another over their own unique and respective troubles and experiences with PTSD. The bulk of the film falls on their shoulders, which does admittedly make for a bit of a narrative drag, but the two of them and their combined talents are enough more often than not to hold things up for the film's small hour and a half runtime and narrative.

Causeway is a small, intimate drama that ultimately adds up to nothing.
It's a story with a lot to explore but basically settles for leaving it all in small situations that make all the weight of the plot fall on Jennifer Lawrence's character and her sober and noticeable performance, to which is added the appearance of a solid Brian Tyree Henry. While this is a plus for the film because Lawrence once again demonstrates the acting quality that put her on the map over a decade ago with Winter's Bone, in reality Causeway is a film that is unlikely to leave a lasting impression on the viewer, regardless of what it achieves during its running time. Not that it's just another one of the bunch, but it doesn't stand out among them either.
