As brainy, vital and captivating as its eponymous star, the documentary Bill Nye: Science Guy should warm the hearts and minds of science lovers, weather enthusiasts, environmental watchdogs and astronomy buffs, all while inspiring viewers to ask questions and seek answers.

Bill Nye: Science Guy is an efficiently thought-provoking study of what it means to be a rational and analytical advocate for science in an age when deniers of evolution and climate-change often seem to have higher profiles, deeper pockets and louder voices. But it’s even more interesting as the story of a beloved celebrity who wants to reinvent himself, to be taken more seriously.

Channeling Nye’s own gift for making complex ideas simple and clear, the filmmakers edit together these various aspects of Nye’s life with deceptive ease, drawing on interviews and archival material and following him throughout his hectic schedule. This is not hagiography, however; they don’t back off from examining some of his more controversial endeavors and characteristics. That includes his fondness for the spotlight and his ambition, which in a couple of instances has backfired on him.

Nye’s focus on work has had a deleterious effect on his social life. Some of Nye’s issues are no doubt the result of lifelong fears that he may be struck by a neurological condition called Ataxia that runs in his family, but which so far has not affected him.

As the movie explores Nye’s family history, we do see just how intertwined the threads of thinking and emotion can be.

Directors David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg don’t dig deeply enough into their complex subject, while spending too much time on the same distractions that are compromising Nye’s focus.

Entertaining and informative documentary about Bill Nye covering childhood to the present. Of course the film covers the history of "Bill Nye, The Science Guy" including interviews with the writer and producer of the series. But the real core of the film is scenes covering his recent activity promoting science in the classroom and educating the public about humanity's role in global warming. His debate with Ken Ham and a followup visit to the Ark Experience are covered as well as a trip to an ice core research station in the arctic. A good part of the film covers his time as CEO of the Planetary Society and their solar sail project (inspired by the late Carl Sagan) and this sequence provides some positive vibes to balance the challenges he faces debating climate change deniers. The documentary is beautifully filmed, with a variety of interview subjects, archival footage, and informative graphics. Even climate change deniers are given a decent amount of screen time, though it's clear Nye and the film producers get to steer the narrative. There are moments of sadness and moments of pure joy, highly recommended if you're a fan of Bill or a science geek.
