Between Two Ferns: The Movie

Galifianakis delivers a reminder of just what makes his brand of comedy so unique, special, and even a little daring.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie does its best to coat Zach Galifianakis' dense and dopey TV host with a larger story but, in the end, the best parts are still when it's just him glassily staring into the eyes of a movie star and telling them how much they suck at acting.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie is too much Between Two Ferns to fit into an episode but not enough movie for a sit-down-in-the-theater experience. Still, it’s companionable in the lowered-stakes world of Netflix films where pleasantness and a handful of highlights seem to matter as much as excellence.

Perhaps the film’s overwhelming ace is an overarching awareness of just how pointless it really is, made with the same disposability with which it should be consumed.

It’s a half-assed premise, given a half-assed treatment that makes Wayne’s World look like The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The performances are loose and self-aware, the filmmaking strictly at the level of sketch comedy, the jokes amiably predictable, and the story a mess.

Like some of the feature-length spinoffs of old “Saturday Night Live” sketches that proliferated in the ’90s, it feels like a padded version of a bit that was a lot sharper in five-minute increments.

I was already expecting this movie to be good, being a fan of the director/writer, and most of the main actors, but was pleasantly surprised to find it one of the best comedies I've seen in a while. Very fun film. It's funny that people here are criticizing the plot when it's super obvious the plot was intended to be absurdly silly and contrived; it's just a goofy comedy, with mostly improvised dialog.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie is a weird one. The actual interviews are generally quite enjoyable and have some genuinely funny moments, but the interviews only make up a small portion of the film. The rest is a story about Zach and his crew attempting to film 10 episodes of the show in a short amount of time, and it is ****. The blooper reel during the credits is pure gold, though.

A good premise poorly executed. The best part of this film are the Two Fern celebrity interviews that unfortunately are cut between a terrible plot about getting to Hollywood to 'make it big'.

Oh gosh. My expectations based on the shorts were so high. Sad to say, while there are some funny scenes, the whole thing is a mess. It makes no sense, is over-plotted and flat. Too many winks into the camera and some truly awful performances by some of the cameo star appearances.

I've always considered the web-series brilliant, so this is a terrible let down. The 90% of the film that isn't the celebrity interviews is mind-numbingly generic, and embarrassingly lame. Just spend 15 minutes and fast forward to each interview, and also watch the post credits.
