Annabelle Comes Home

What follows is excellent, uncomplicated and well-wrought house-of-horrors fun, complete with a message about self-blame and the real things that haunt us. Gary Dauberman is a first-time director, but don’t worry, Mom and Dad, your kids (and everyone else) are in good hands with him.

Name your fear trigger, and it’s probably there, somewhere, in Annabelle Comes Home. It looks like a horror film, but it’s really the horror equivalent of speed dating.

The new movie basically jams the archetypes of a John Hughes teen comedy into a minimalist haunted scenario. While that’s not enough to suppress the underlying gimmickry of the storytelling, Annabelle Comes Home at least manages to charm and frighten its way through the purest distillation of the “Conjuring” formula to date.

If it’s not quite as good as the doll’s origin story, “Creation,” it’s still way more fun than any sequel — especially one this deep into a franchise — has any right to be.

Apparently intended as a gateway movie for future horror movie fans, Annabelle Comes Home is a sex-and-death-free haunted-house tale about adventures in demonic baby-sitting.

An ever-changing obstacle course does sustain its own kind of tension, but it’s not like there’s a real puzzle to solve, nor any arc to the plot. The movie is just a succession of scary stuff happening, haunted-ride-style.

Burdened neither by fresh ideas nor common sense, Gary Dauberman’s lethargic screenplay (he also directed, an inauspicious debut) takes so long to get moving that Annabelle herself should demand a do-over.

While the film's plot and scares are rather predictable and unoriginal, Annabelle Comes Home delivers an entertaining horror experience full of masterful cinematography and intriguing new horrors accompanying the titular doll.

Annabelle Comes Home is a sequel we really didn't need. Throughout you are constantly questioning the reason behind its existence because of its severe lack of plot. I will admit that the film's strong point is the performances given by the actors. All the actors do a good job with the little material they are given. Throughout it becomes clear that Annabelle Comes Home is just your generic horror movie filled with constant jump scares. The film expects you to be scared just because a character turns around, everything goes quiet and then something jumps out for nothing. Not to progress the plot, not to add to a character's development, just for a cheap predictable scare we have all seen a thousand times. What annoys me the most is the aforementioned severe lack of plot. Literally nothing significant happens in this movie. Its just the characters running around a house for an hour and a half while things jump out and scare them. If you are just looking for a lazy horror movie to make you jump every now and then you will be entertained. But if you are looking for a well made, thought provoking horror movie you will not be impressed with Annabelle Comes Home.
