Beautifully acted, sensitively written, carefully and economically directed, American Woman is the best film about the gradual but triumphant empowerment of an abused woman I have seen in this age of distaff political enlightenment.

The role of Deb is not written with any great depth, but Miller gets into the character’s psychological complications in a way that almost compensates for the lack.

It is an emotional drama about the life of a small town single mom that spans more than 10 years of her life filled with wild rollercoaster of events. At first I felt that I did not like the title of the movie. But when the protagonist Debbie revealed her real character with persistence, perseverance and willpower, I realized that the title was quite adequate and fitting. Debbie is played by Sienna Miller, and that is one of the best performances I’ve seen this year so far. The whole cast has done fantastic job. Especially I loved Christine Hendricks playing Debbie’s sister Katherine. The whole movie looks and feels incredibly real. Overall, in my opinion it is Oscar caliber movie and should not be missed.

It feels strange to say this about a film where a woman loses her daughter, but American Woman isn’t a sad movie. It’s an incredibly hopeful movie about a woman who had a very sad thing happen to her, and she somehow found the strength to build a better life and not close herself off from people who love her. In “American Woman,” Debra doesn’t just survive: she lives.

American Woman at once reveals its soft underbelly while landing a surprisingly effective punch to the gut — largely thanks to Miller’s deft performance.

Sienna Miller offers a beautiful, agile performance that would by itself justify the film's existence.

It’s not an especially profound story. But it is a movingly rendered one, made watchable by an actress whose elastic performance bookends the film with two very different people.

Despite the script’s lack of character depth, Miller gives a consistently phenomenal performance.

Although Miller invests heart and soul into the performance, maybe even career-best work from the actress, and the rest of the cast, especially Hendricks, are excellent, Ingelsby’s screenplay foolishly decides to lay its interests on Deb’s terrible taste in men rather than her daughter’s disappearance.

This is a somewhat sobering drama film that centres on a missing sibling. It depicts domestic violence and features some good performances. It has a surprisingly subtle feel about it. Some may say its a bit slow pace wise but I thought it wasn't bad, as the viewer gets slow insights into the family dynamic, which keep us interested to keep watching and see what we learn next. Its one of those films which might have you guessing what is next to come, the next twist etc. A good film, worth a watch, yes I'd recommend it.

American Woman is a moving drama that follows a woman living in an American small town for over ten years. Specifically, it follows her from the day she moves into a house with her teenage daughter and grandson, to the day she moves out of the house over a decade later. Deb, our heroine, powerfully played by Sienna Miller, finds herself with a terrible hand in life. She has been dealt this hand by a mixture of fate and her own poor decisions. I really hated Deb at the beginning of the movie, but by the end, I couldn't help but empathize and even love her. The story, the visual themes and motiffs, and the direction are the highlights of this movie. The soundtrack and supporting cast kind of **** at times, but there is enough philosophical and dramatic meat here to really warrant a close watch, particularly if you are a fan of American drama.

While the acting performance by Miller is phenomenal...almost everything else about the movie could not be more of a waste. The protagonist that Miller plays is not simply 'flawed,' she is as unlikeable as anyone can be, but the film doesn't even seem to realize that. What is more, almost none of the plot is actually focused on the main mystery that the story advertises, in fact it is hardly touched at all. Instead, almost the entirety of the runtime is focused on screaming matches between a family. Other than the acting, just nothing much of value in this film.

(Mauro Lanari) Tragedy, drama or melodrama? When even a serial killer is included in a study of a working-class character, how does that differ from a poverty porn?
