Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga
Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga is a nostalgic fanservice game for Falcom’s PSP era. I happen to love both Ys and The Legend of Heroes: Trails, so indulging in this missing localized title was a true delight. It might only appeal to diehard Falcom fans or those who enjoy earlier Ys and Trails games, but if you fall into those categories, it’s undoubtedly entertaining. When all else fails, I’d bet on the little girl with the orbal cannon any day of the week!
Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga is a curious piece of Falcom's history that finally comes officially to the West. Though it has some quirks that may keep it from what people expect of a competitive fighting game, it's a consistently fun game that's worth exploring, especially for the fans of the Japanese developer.
It took fifteen years, but Falcom’s crossover arena fighter finally gets its moment in the West, and it’s worth the wait. Packed with your favorite characters, punchy combat, and a heap of nostalgic charm, Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga is just plain fun, whether you’re a longtime fan or just jumping in.

I had low expectations for this title, knowing it is a budget title even from Falcom standards, but it turned out to be surprisingly fun! The combat is a bit chaotic and not as robust as in the Ys series, but it's tight enough for a PSP game remastered. The music is definitely a highlight, with arrangements of tracks across all Ys and Legend of Heroes games (not just Trails!). The story is short, but it is meant to be played multiple times with each characters, so I think it is totally by design. There is a lot of stuff to clear and upgrade, so someone who's going in with the grind can easily spend 30-40 hours completing everything. Overall, not by any means competing with the mainline Ys and Trails games, but successfully provides a quick arcade-style entertainment.

Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga brings Falcom’s cult PSP crossover to modern systems with surprising care, offering nostalgic charm for long-time fans of Ys and Trails. Featuring rollback netcode, new voice acting, and refined visuals, it’s a unique action-RPG fighter hybrid that excels in gameplay customization but struggles with its limited appeal and uneven storytelling.
