I still enjoyed this game, for the character development and good storyline kept things interesting. I enjoyed the battles too, though they could have used some variety. It's almost too linear in its presentation, which makes it feel like 95 percent of the game falls under the "beat the hell out of thugs and go from point A to point B" scenario. [JPN Import]

Unlike 99% of games, in Ryu Ga Gotoku you play as a guy who is pretty much the coolest, most badass, most likeable character in the world. He's the ultra strong guy with a heart of gold; the suave guy whom everyone wants to be friends with. So following Kazuma through his adventure tends to be extremely satisfying since he's such a great character. [JPN Import]

No threat to "GTA," but it's not meant to be. Instead it's an absorbing role-playing adventure with plenty to keep you busy. [Sept 2006, p.74]

ten years in the joint made you a **** **** would recommend, hilarious dubbing and fast gameplay.

The game, which was the beginning of the Yakuza series, was truly one of the top quality works of its time. Even now, when I play it, the game is really an 8-9 out of 10 game, with its very good story, characters and action system.

A long and riveting story, plenty of freedom and a fantastic battle system have earned it a spot on my all-time Playstation 2 top 10 list. [Sept 2006, p.52]

It should have been slicker, but there's no denying the entertainment value on offer. [Oct 2006, p.76]

English dub. That's it English dub. English dub? English dub! Too bad they didn't have the English dub in yakuza 2.

What we have in Yakuza is a highly effective Japanese gangster story crammed into a PS2 game, and a visually impressive one at that.

For some, Yakuza will feel dangerously dumb, due to its unrefined and relentless combat, but it's just as dangerous to risk overlooking its capacity to be fiercely capable and loveably playful in plenty of other ways, always aiming to provide captivating entertainment. [Oct 2006, p.84]

It's just a case of proportions - too much storyline and too much random battling - and if we're going down the route of size comparison, hands and shoulders need attention too.
60
It's just that while being a competent and perfectly enjoyable pick'n'mix of some of the best games of the last 10 years, Yakuza doesn't excel at any aspect it borrows. It isn't greater than the sum of its parts.

Roam around Tokyo, find some bad guys, see some load screens, a couple of cut-scenes, some more load screens, press some buttons in fight mode and so on.

Yakuza 1 was a blast, yeah the english dub makes it ironically awesome, but i played undub just for the feeling, and it feels weird playing the first game, its one of those "first game of the franchise" so it aged not very well, but its still a great game, i could actually play the remake Yakuza Kiwami but i decided to play the original PS2 version just to see how things was back in the PS2, fixed camera, fighting encounters like in a RPG instead of the fight happen instantly in the open world, not too many options but its very understandable, its the first game and its PS2, but the low colors, the atmosphere, its damn good, its recommendable to play Kiwami because it has everything the series has learned but PS2 Yakuza worths a shot

The camera is a bit wonky and the dub coupled with a westernized script is so full of F-bombs that the cool and collected yakuza sound more like foulmouthed, drunken suburban teens. Other than that, though, the game delivers an excellent story, memorable characters, and plenty of optional stuff to discover in a sandbox of Tokyo's seedier district.

**** game and i still give it a 4 because the fights were fun but that's all because the rest of the game is just walking around the small map chat and watch cutscene, when I bought it in 2010 I thought this crap would be a beat em up. the graphics and map interaction was great
