Wargaming’s attempt at a more broadly appealing World of Tanks game hits the target. It may be a little grindy, even by free-to-play standards, but it’s such a blast to play that you can probably overlook it while they (hopefully) continue to refine the in-game economy. An easy recommendation for competitive shooter fans.

If you’re even remotely curious about hero shooters then this is definitely one worth trying thanks to its engaging mix of tactical tank gameplay and hero shooter systems.

World of Tanks HEAT isn’t the kind of free-to-play game that’s going to revolutionise the genre, but its accessible blend of hero shooter and tank battles works well and is guaranteed to give you a good time – far more than you might expect – with a few adrenaline-fuelled matches.

World of Tanks: Heat successfully transforms tank combat into a fast-paced hero shooter with solid gameplay, strong maps, and impressive visuals. However, shallow worldbuilding, heavy grinding, limited content, and balance issues prevent it from becoming a long-term multiplayer obsession.

The limited game modes and the tanky controls put a damper on the experience. Especially as an online sandbox where players can face off with bigger guns and larger explosions, there’s a lot of potential for growth and expansion. Being a live-service game like this will come in handy, and future expansions and updates could help remedy some of the problems that currently create a barrier of entry. While the game is a solid free-to-play title and the premium model means there is plenty of room to grow, World of Tanks: HEAT has some work to do before it can really overtake the competition. Especially if you’re looking for a different kind of shooter, this is the game to play.
