Winter Stars is yet another addition to the alarmingly large and growing catalogue of Kinect shovelware currently available, giving Microsoft's device an exceedingly bad rap. There's some potential here, but it's marred by sloppy execution, a naff career mode and gameplay that just isn't fun or engaging in any way. You'd be better off skiing over a snowy precipice into a bottomless crevice than face playing Winter Stars for any length of time.

The Winter of our discontent. [Feb 2012, p.101]
An interesting title and with good potential, but it drowns in defects we can't ignore, like the badly balanced difficulty and a bad ui in the menus. You could however consider it if you're looking for a more serious Kinect sports game.

Career mode is a lot fun. Humorous character development, nice diversity of winter sports. Best played swapping events with a friend; a bit tiring to play through by yourself and very difficult to master all of the events. As I say with most kinect games; would like it if the controls were more natural; more like you were really doing the event.

I bought this game from a bargain bin for about 20 dollars, yet this feels too much for a game rattling with flaws. First of all the menu is an abomination. You need the steady hand of a marksman to highlight the menu feature that you want and then the finesse of a blind massage to select anything. For some unknown reason the Xbox controller is disabled so you will spend much of your time performing Jedi mind tricks just to get beyond the menus. The sports on offer are good but broken. For some reason the game will run itself but then when you want to actually have any input it assumes you are a drunk fool and mimics your lack of coordination. The one positive is the length of the sports. Particularly the ski then shoot target game, that is okay when the moons align around Jupiter long enough for the player to finish the challenge. 3/10.

It's winter time and it means cold-based sports game, better enjoyed with move sensors like Kinect, Move or Wiimote! Long time veterans like 49Games could be ready for their bigger and better game, if so many flaws weren't in.

Winter Stars has high ambitions, but is terribly unpolished. If you've got the patience you'll find a few entertaining events, and the game is a rare try to make a serious sports game for Kinect.. Party gamers beware though, as the focus is set on the single-player mode.

There are better ways of spending your time during the cold winter months than playing Winter Stars.

You can stay busy in the pretty lengthy career mode, where you're competing in tournaments, unlocking various disciplines, and following a well-meaning but rough storyline. And there's local split-screen and online multiplayer supporting up to four players, but good luck convincing anyone else to join you in this seasonal depression.

It ranges from boring and stupid to totally incomprehensible, and neither end of the spectrum amounts to any fun at all. [Issue#80, p.87]
