For the purposes of this review I'll be talking about the "OldUnreal" release of Unreal Gold. For a game that released in 1998, the game plays really nicely with very little needed to get it playing on modern hardware. A lot of the graphical effects, models, texture work, and lighting still look pretty good imo. Movement is nice, combat is fun, the weapons are punchy, the sound design is well done, as well as the level design being generally solid for a shooter made around the same time as Quake 2. The story is barebones, but that's kinda to be expected since Half Life hadn't released yet. My only real issue with the game is that the UI can't be scaled up to fit modern displays. If you want to play Unreal at 1080p or higher, the UI is gonna be pretty small, which is annoying, but you kinda get used to it after a while.

Прошел оригинальный unreal 1998 года. Это самый классический бумер шутер из тех самых времён, когда выходили sin, half life, quake 2 и прочее и не менее легендарен. Основное что привнёс собой unreal это знаменитое двигло, мне сложно оценить насколько unreal engine рвал тогда крышу, по всей видимости очень сильно, так как графика даже сейчас выглядит очень четкой, на консолях текстурки такого качества и разрешение появились (как мне кажется) не ранее чем на третьей плойке. Освещение в игре максимально прорывное на момент выхода и игра постоянно пытается его вам показать, иногда даже превращая игру в подобие хоррора. Возможно это одна из первых (если не первая) игр в которых присутствовало динамическое освещение. Геймплей классический, больше всего напоминает кваку, однако искусственный интеллект тут лютый, постоянно пытается тебя мансить и трахнуть в задницу, видно что игра создавалась с расчётом на онлайн (который был реализован в турнаменте), это прямо чувствуется. Оружия много, но ничего необычного. Присутствует частая проблема бесполезности некоторых стволов, и сверхполезности изначальных пушек, но тут это практически не бесит. Основная проблема игры – левел дизайн, он крайне душный, многие бы даже не стали пользоваться гайдами и просто дропнули игру от такой мозгоёбки. Однако, это не турок 2 (который даже если вы будете проходить строго по гайдам – НЕ ПРОЙДЁТЕ!) и игру можно пройти даже без подсказок, но левел дизайн очень неприятен. Открытые локации самые понятные и интересные, однако большая часть игры – анальные коридоры, что печально. В целом отличный шутан, эта игра входит в фонд обязательной базы для любителей ретро.

magical game, amazing atmosphere and brilliant music. Unreal definitely deserves a remake, I love it.

From today's perspective, only partially recommendable. Many levels are very confusing and the switching puzzles are unclear. For example, you stand in front of a switch in a tower, press it and have no idea what it does. You then go back, make your way through countless corridors that all look the same, only to find out that a door has opened in the basement. Sometimes, but not always, you can even press the switches twice and accidentally close the door in the basement again - without noticing. It took me 10.7 hours to play through the game - of which I easily spent 3-4 hours running around without a plan and without orientation, looking for where to go next - sometimes very frustrating. It's a good thing that there are lets plays these days, otherwise I would probably have given up just before the end because I couldn't get any further. I also played through DOOM II this week and although it's 4 years older, it was much more enjoyable to play, especially because the levels were clearer and you have an overview map. If Unreal also had an overview map, it would be a clear recommendation.

An amazing action-adventure game on an alien planet with graphics that were “unreal” for their time. The aliens you fight are fast and challenging. Each of the weapons are unique and most of them are rather unconventional. There is a lot of variety to the levels - you will journey through wilderness, caverns, ancient temples, castles, and spaceships. And the music by Alexander Brandon is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the previously amazing graphics are now outdated, although you can download high-definition skins and textures to mitigate this problem somewhat.

For 6 months before Half-Life, this game was revolutionary and still holds up as one of the greatest "boomer shooters" of its time. Unsung and underrated as all ****.

It's a legendary game worth memories. I didn't finish it in 1999 because **** with a portal to the queen mothership. I did many years later. But UT was a kick-ass. Still consider Unreal one of the best because of the sky and the music. And the sound of the translator device. GODLIKE!

I can´t believe this game is 22 years old! Unreal did set the standard for nearly all FPSs that were released. The setting is surreal, perfectly supported by the beautiful graphics and sound. Pure action and a terrific classic!

Playing Unreal is a unique experience. You know it's a classic of the 90s, but it's overshadowed by other games like Half Life. It's rarely talked about, which is a shame. You play as the last survivor of a crashed ship called the Vortex Rikers (the first level where you escape the ship is perfect) and you find yourself on the alien Planet of Na'Pali. Where Unreal really shines is when you explore the outside world of this planet. Unreal made use of huge environments not seen in many other shooters at the time, and the scale is impressive. The level is design is also great too, even if some levels are really confusing (sunspire anyone?). The shooting is good for the most part, the weapons sound good and gibbing enemies is great fun too. It's a classic from the 90s and with the prices you can it for these days, it's a steal.

Incredible level design. This was the game that demonstrated how levels could be big - really big. The graphics were unmatched for the standards of the day. I would go as far to say that it wasnt until half life 2 that half life really became undisputed champion of FPS's. Because unreal always had half life 1 licked when it came to the graphics engine. Its not as good gameplay wise, but it demonstrated where FPS's were going, and that was a special moment. Hands down better than Quake 2, which is its only real rival really (not including half life).

This game in my opinion has the best and the most effective on player atmosphere FPS game ever! right from the start even on menu, you feel lonely, depressed and scared. graphics is great and all textures colored grey, black and sometimes dark green and blue that helps a lot to create a strange and mysterious atmosphere. also the music is amazing. most of the times with the help of great level design and atmosphere puts you in an endless nightmare of being alone among the monsters! You will find some PDA during the game usually beside a dead body that with reading it you can feel deep inside how miserable and lonely that guy was before dying. I can't say enough about amazing things that happened to me during playing this game. You should experience it by yourself!

Great graphics, incredible soundtrack, challenging AI, and no-frills gameplay all come together to create an unparalleled atmosphere that has yet to be matched. And this game's development began in a garage! This is the game that got me into games so in giving it a 10 I'm giving it a very biased score. But if you enjoy FPS games in the slightest, do yourself a favor... Download the ultra high-res textures for the best experience.

If you're a fan of games like Quake and Half Life, you need to give Unreal a shot. It's got the same fast paced action with nothing to interrupt it at all, no cutscenes or overuse of scripted events. It's also got a long campaign that'll leave you playing for hours upon hours and the planet Na Pali is the perfect beautiful and atmospheric setting for this game.

En su tiempo fue una verdadera revolución, Con sus texturas, su ambiente físico, que logró cautivar a muchísimos de nosotros. Hay que destacar que se logra explotar bastante bien su Unreal Engine, Su música acorde a los niveles, una obra maestra. El modo Multijugador se lleva todos los aplausos.

One of the most innovative and atmospheric first person shooters ever released. This is a beautiful classic. The amount of effort put into this game must have been astronomical on the developers with how large the levels are, how advanced the AI were for 1998, and the innovative multiplayer game types.

Graphics and soundtrack of this game played in a league of their own, managed to impress easily and **** you in unreals well designed atmospheric world. Sadly epic never managed to release games this good again. Unreal 2 was a pure dis-appointment. Remember this game to be at like 93-94 meta-score and user score. Where are all the reviews gone?

one of my many all time favorites I actually prefer this to UT.(but that seems uncommon) it has a tournament type part to it. but i like the single player story mode just travel through interesting levels and kill monsters. classic stuff.

This is an EXCELLENT game. It is very cheap (only 10$ on steam) and it has a lot of replay value. Unreal is set on the surreal and beautiful planet Na Pali, and the environments range from luscious waterfalls to dark caves. The multiplayer is also fun, and you are able to play with bots. I'd recommend you pick it up (especially if You like older FPS'.)
