As with any thoughtful storytelling, Soma works on multiple levels.
SOMA is not the horror game I expected out of Frictional, but I don’t care and it doesn’t matter. This is an excellent work of science fiction, not necessarily unique but uniquely told through its skillful use of video game conceits. It’s System Shock 2 for a modern sensibility, BioShock freed of its AAA chains. It’s damn good and, for my money, the most cohesive and ambitious game Frictional’s made so far.

I parted with Soma with the same feeling that came over me while I was watching “Matrix”, “Interstellar” or “Inception”. Once again someone came up with something no one thought of before and took me for an amazing ride into the unknown. [12/2015, p.40]

To start i just want to say that this game is weird. I keep play and drop it yet i still feel it has something to offer, i couldn't bring myself to drop and delete it. The game the story that focus on conscious and life are really interesting. The horror gameplay enhance your immersion and that is amazing despite I'm not a fan of horror that why i have a hard time playing this game. I cant really say anything bad about this game except it was exhausting just trying to sink everything in. Overall, what a trip.

cringy speaking character "oh there's blood on my face because my brain bleeds sometimes" and clunky walking sim controls. Feels like bad indie writing that wants to be profound

You know that sensation when you finish a game and you're, like, "Damn". Well, that's what happened to me when I finished this masterpiece.

One of the best games I've played this year and my favorite from Frictional to date.

My favorite game of all time. No game makes you think about life the way that Soma does it. Absolute masterpiece

It may not stir the hordes of wailing YouTubers looking for the next best haunted house, but SOMA succeeds at crafting something much more meaningful in a genre that’s deserving of more than just simple jump scares.

Soma’s impressively realized underwater ordeal challenges even the coldest robot-slayers to consider a world where making such snap moral decisions is anything but automatic.

What it may lack in gameplay elements, it more than makes up with a deep philosophical story that will make the player think as deeply as few games have ever managed before.

A masterpiece of audio and visual design, SOMA is atmospheric, cerebral, and occasionally frustrating.

The only thing SOMA does well is monsters. If Frictional took a lesson from Alien: Isolation and let them roam the entire map, the game would’ve had a chance to shine. Alas, every encounter is totally predictable, so they fail to sufficiently spice SOMA’s totally bland and predictable story. [Issue#203, p.77]

Great story bad gameplay, same as a machine for pigs but the gameplay is slightly better and the story is more explanatory.

It has some very good moments, but overall the game was a dissapointment for me. The story and even the ending was extremely forseeable. The game is very clearly divided into scary moments and story moments to a point where you just swing from running to reading. Yes the atmosphere is very good but overall it just falls short of what it could have been. I would have prefered to make it either as scary as Amnesia which would have been awesome in this underwater setting. Or a better story with some twists. It feels like the devs couldn't really decide where to go. For me the Ending was the biggest disappointment as I was really sitting in my chair and thought "Did they really just go for the most obvious ending possible? ****
