A simple but incredibly powerful experience, that uses interaction to convey well known themes in a different, emotional and bizarrely frightening way.

Shelter is a game about being a badger and strange as that may sound it is first and foremost a pleasant and beautiful little adventure. It doesn't really strive to anything majestic but it's still a great game for those who want something different.

If you found Proteus poignant and Gone Home felt like going home, Shelter will break your heart. [Nov 2013, p.88]

Shelter's aesthetic touches create genuine empathy and concern for its characters, but it's hampered by the lack of clarity in its level design.

It's definitely something unique. We could tell you many things about it, but it's something you need to experiment and draw your own conclusions.

Amazing game, the experience was unlike anything else. Yes, it has a short story but its one of a kind. You find yourself attached to the cubs as you journey your way through harsh conditions. I loved it.

An original and experimental game, that delivers a truly emotional experience. On the other hand, it suffers from a repetitive gameplay and a of general lack of indications, which can be frustrating.

If you have the urge to put yourself in sow's place, and protect your cubs on a road through the forest full of uninteresting obstacles, then Shelter is a good choice for you. Otherwise, try to read the Adams' Watership Down classic adventure novel.

That Shelter is not a particularly convincing simulation of being a badger is no real sin—I doubt many people want to play a game about eating earthworms all day. The game's real failure is that it's not an emotionally compelling representation of parenthood. It convincingly shows that the cubs need their mother, but fails to convey the possibility that they can ever not need her.

It sets out to explore a very compelling set of themes, parenthood, responsibility and the casual cruelty of nature, but it ends up doing so in the most straightforward and predictable way possible. It's almost ironic how a game so adamantly about nature manages to feel so unnatural.

I want more games like this! Maybe with a family of city rats this time? And based on CryEngine or Frostbite 3? The gameplay was quite intuitive, although sometimes I had to learn on my mistakes just like I would if I was a real badger! I think the game wasn't too long or too short.

A simple, short hide-and-seek chaperone experience! It's pretty straightforward but worth your brief chunk of time

It starts quite nice but ends fast. Linear tunnel art game about badger and nature. It could be nice but it gets quite boring as i don't really find the art so breathtakingly nice and the background tune is quite meh. Someone who likes badgers a lot would like it, but for an art game there are better alternatives.
SummaryAs the mother of a litter of cubs you are forced out from familiar and safe surroundings to find new shelter in a beautiful, but dangerous world. The harsh reality of nature plays a pivotal role in the game whilst at the same time Shelter aims to pay a homage to the great outdoors and all its imposing beauty.
