At least it has better than Doom 3, but that doesn't mean much when I think about how terrible Doom 3 was. Quake 4 actually starts off well, but after a few hours you've seen all the content the game has to offer, but at that point there are still hours left in the campaign. The single player campaign is overlong and the difficulty is unbalanced. Enemies are bullet sponges and you can't kill them without firing magazines of bullets at them, but they can often kill you in a few shots. The cinematic narrative is weak. The main character has no motivation or personality and after a while you completely forget that there's a background story and just keep killing creatures. There is very little enemy variety and the game is very repetitive, including the locations. They tried to reduce this repetitiveness in the gameplay with sections where we use vehicles like tanks and robots, but I think these sections made everything even worse. These levels are just long corridors with endless enemies being thrown at you. Most of the time I jumped completely avoiding the enemies because I got bored. Finally, the worst part of the gameplay is that the main character moves like a snail and can't run. The game has a walk button but no run button. As a result, even though I try to like it, it is a failed game even for its time. For today, it is not worth spending time. If the gameplay was a bit faster and the campaign was shorter, I would have given it a thumbs up for the dark atmosphere similar to Warhammer 40K, but gameplay was unnecessarily dragged out by the developers and completely disrespectful of my time, so that wasn't possible.

Call of Quake. It'll do for beer. Raven Software did Call of Duty, but what the latest COD turned into, I'd rather play it. And overall, very well done.

This Quake is after Quake 2 again an action ego-shooter.
It's very army driven. With that, you always get the "adrenalin boost" while gaming. There are even some creepy horror scenes.
I still like the graphics and the enemy sprites. You get a lot of weapons, which are different to use.
The flashlight is actually useful and looks stylish. The light ambience in general is very nice.
You have access to some vehicles/fight-machines.
I like that the story is easily understandable and logic.
Verdict: It is always fun to play a round.

I'm re-playing this 2005 game in 2022. For a 17 year old piece of triple-A FPS entertainment, this holds up pretty well. It's also just fun to adjust settings on a relatively low performance laptop and get warned that ultra-high quality visuals will require "500 megabytes" of memory. While action wise this game presents as a straightforward FPS, at 2nd to hardest difficulty it frustratingly tries to be a survival horror game. I've dipped into God mode multiple times to get through rooms drowned out by multiple spawned bullet sponge enemies. Art design wise, this is pretty good advancement from the prequel, Quake 2 in terms of enemy design. Enviromentally, the themes get played out pretty quickly, with lots of crucification imagery, spurts of blood and body goo, and general mutilation. There are some nice set pieces, like a weird gigantic baby-monster that you disturbingly have to kill. The rendering of human NPC is hit or miss, with some human faces unintentionally completely distorted from reality. Colors in the dark indoor scenes pop pretty well, while the outdoor levels are a monotonous dirt color scheme that (after 17 years) feels lazy and certainly hasn't aged well aesthetically. In terms of the single player level design, maps are hit or miss. There's some very basic "green means goes" in terms of pathing on inside levels. The outside levels aren't as linear or easy to read, and I've jumped onto youtube around five times during this playthrough so far. The difficulty ramps as you get deeper into the game - I've found the full weapons arsenal, but no ammo for most of the weapons. Also, on my setup and config at least, it seems the enemies get to hid in the darkness and corners but have perfect aim to your character. (I'm playing the campaign at 2nd highest difficulty.) Other artificial difficulty factor - arbitrarily doors lock behind you, leaving you with little cover against bullet sponge semi-bosses. Also, ally NPC throw themselves into the line of fire, resulting in game-over states because they're too stupid to take cover.

It does not suit to the Quake franchise in my humble opinion. However worth to play.

Quake 4 continues the story of Quake 2. It offers reasonably fun combat against cybernetic alien freaks with a variety of satisfying weapons. The graphics and sound are quite impressive for a game released back in 2005. However, I didn't find it memorable because the story was dull, your fellow soldiers were lackadaisical about their imminent danger on a hostile alien planet, and the music was uninspiring. I also tried the online multiplayer but didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoyed Quake 3: Arena.

The interface is wonderful. You have so much information immediately available to you. Google Maps always has a minimap in the lower left corner, which gives you a good overview of the area. Getting information about people gives you a clear, clear window. Hacking offers a menu with easily recognizable icons, so you always know what your button presses will do.

I think i was too much fondled with the fast gameplay of Q3A and UT that this game simply felt slow and boring. And it does not make me want to go back for some reason either. Its not a bad game but i wouldnt call it a good game either. You forget it very fast.

Довольно крутая игра а также продолжение quake 2 так же тут можно управлять бронетехникой (роботами и танками) правда минус такой: персонаж слишком медленный а так всё ок

A more mediocre and boring Doom 3, i don´t even know how you make a Quake game that is just boring. And to be honest why would i reccomend Quake 4 if there are better games out there with the same theme as this one?

Game was released after DOOM 3 which was better game for me Even so, game was still good to play, with unique atmosphere and lots of gunplay. But also weakest Quake game I ever played.

I absolutely love Quake 4. It's basically a sequel to Quake 2, and I really liked Quake 2 as well. The only reason I can't give Quake 4 a perfect 10/10 score is the unskippable bullcrap. The driving parts are just annoying and stupid, so I turn on god mode and coast through them every time. The story stuff gets in the way as well. The story parts are reasonably short, so they don't slow the action down too much, but it's still a big enough problem to piss me off. I bought this game on CDs and I plan to buy a second copy on Steam when it goes on sale. I would suggest you buy a copy as well. $10 seems like the right price to wait for.

Can't believe this game gets so much hate compared to other quake games. It's everything you could expect from a Quake game, dark, "scary", exciting, hard... The multiplayer is great too, the only problem is the movement for the campaign is quite slow, hence the 8, quake is about speed and jumping.

Although I love FPS, I have never been much of a fan of the Doom/Quake series (but I quite liked Doom 3 atmosphere and gameplay). But Quake IV was a real let down. I kept pushing myself through it, not having much fun at all, and wondering "Why am I doing this? Why bother?"... but I did, hoping the game would end soon. Go figure. And when I finished, I was relieved! It's not a bad game per se, it's just... meh. And hours of meh don't make for a great experience. You just run around, kill monsters, find switches, go back (a lot), kill monsters again, same old, same old. Graphics are good, but Doom 3 was way better and immersive; here there's no mystery, no atmosphere, it looks like just a lame excuse to shoot stuff. If you don't need imagination and inspiration at all, and you just want to shoot and kill stuff, then you might like it - good for you ;-)

After 9 hours of gameplay, I realized that the game really do offer something innovative. This game is like, pac pac, and nothing else happens throughout the game. Maybe only small issue, but nothing wow. The game is not as fun as the previous ones.

Quake 4 is a good game that effectively utilizes the Doom 3 engine. The game’s plot is quite enthralling with often gruesome in-game cut scenes and Hollywood style acting. In order to beat the Strogg force you actually become one of them later in the game, making for some interesting plot twists. The game’s audio and visuals are excellent and create a dark and scary atmosphere that you actually feel a part of. In spite of the excellence of the campaign there are some shortcomings however. The vehicle sections are quite underwhelming and I feel they are only there to advertise the game’s capabilities and variety rather than being a fun experience in their own right. The multiplayer is also rather dull and is essentially just Quake 3 or Open Arena with more high-tech graphics and a lower player base.

Great game, I like Doom 3 but this is the most badass, and interesting game of their work yet. It so well orchestrated, and I enjoyed every moment of it, I want a proper sequel!!!

Very good shooter. To be honest I've never played more scary game. All this cyberpunk theme, biomechanoids, combining human body with computer parts really tickle your nerves. There are very few games I wanted to complete more that one time, and this it is. Even in 2013 you shall try it, if you like horrors. By the way this game is FAR FAR better that Doom 3 just miles ahead.

This is a pretty OK game. It could be a lot better, and it shouldn't really be Quake. In the originals, the fun was running, jumping, and shooting. This would be called a "runny-jumpy-shooty" game. Unfortunately, Quake 4 lacks this. Jumping makes you go slower when you land, and you can't run at 5k MPH and shoot things in the face and live. Don't get me wrong, I don't look for this in a game. Only Quake and Doom games. This is too story oriented. And on top of that, the story isn't even very good. I mean, it's OK, but more than that, it's just not worth the time. Now, as for the multiplayer, it's just a copy of Quake III Arena with beefed up player and weapon models. And as for the graphics, even for 2005, it's not that great. The weapon models are cool, the textures are cool, but the character models are just atrocious. Now, I don't say "STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!11!!1!" It can be fun. But it doesn't hold up to the former glory of Quake from 1996. I mean, not even id Software was happy with the way Raven and Bethesda took it. So, maybe if you see it at a used game store for like $10 or on sale on Steam for $10, it might be a good buy. But don't expect lots of runny-jumpy-shooty fun.

If you play this game, don't think that all Quakes are like that. They're all excellent games, so don't take this one as a quake. Slow gameplay (although not as much as games like CoD), there's reload (it's horrible to reload in a fps arena)... and generally, there are some bad points. Also, the multiplayer doesn't seem to be very open. Still, it's a good game. The graphics are superb for its time. *Graphics: 7- (about 6.85); *Gameplay: 6; *Plot: 4.75; *Longevity: 5.6 Rating: good Vote/score: 5.8

I last played this when it was released in 2005. 7 years later I installed it again looking for a good action fix and it's still huge fun! This is a focused corridor shooter with great weapons and cool environments, the kind of game that's beginning to fade into history. It's still a very pretty game even by todays standards with atmospheric lighting and good looking enemy models. However the vehicle sections and outdoor areas do look dated now. To be honest I didn't think they looked great in 2005 either. The game and game engine (id tech 4) are at their best in the dark techno-horror corridors of the many Strogg installations. I can highly recommend this to anyone who wants a fun blaster with plenty of challenge. Its typical ID / Raven and people who have grown up with their games will love it.

Even if Quake 1 was different from Quake 2 they had same Gothic Punk Hard Core Design and gameplay. Quake 3 was only multiplayer but many play it today and with great design of guns map and plenty of hell-pentagrams-reversed crosses to keep any lover of quake 1 and 2 satisfied. Then Quake 4 comes along New-Cowboy-Redneck style, I hated it I hated so much it destroyed everything that quake 1-2-3 where.

Quake4 is such a great FPS - I just had to replay this game after I finished playing Rage last week (both games developed by Id). Even 7 years after its original release this game looks great, has snappy weapons, solid AI, and beautiful graphics, and is raw fun. Overall score 9. Played in 2012.03 on Win7 installed using XP SP2 compatibility. DRM CD Key only, no activation.

Really nice and rewarding departure from its predecessor - I'll risk much with this statement, but that's the way Doom 3 should be. As previous reviews have stated: the game shines in design and some really fun action. It is in deed challenging, but rarely frustrating. Rarely I wanted to switch to god mode just to pass the level and move on. I didn't really focus on the (apparently good) dialogue, I just wanted action - and sure I got plenty of it). Where it lets down, however, is game mechanics (try to hit the enemy with a grenade and you'll know what I mean) and unmached firepower/ammo to your enemies - requires some cleverness and quick thinking (also, you're usually slower). The AI makes your teammates wander around in circles while you take all the fire - not fun at all.

A game worth playing for fans of the Strogg storyline. Similar to Doom 3 in mechanics as would be expected. Tons of those little computer screens like Doom. A lot of the weapons are pretty much rehashes of Doom 3 weapons, ie, Grenade Launcher, Machine Gun (which isn't even a machine gun, more of an assault rifle or SMG type thing, why does id always call them that?) "Blaster" which is basically the pistol with infinite ammo, Shotgun, etc. Characters you meet throughout the game will sometimes randomly offer to upgrade some of your weapons. Most of them get a kind of modification, some a lot more useful than others. The enemies are reasonably varied but some of the common foot soldiers are especially predictable and almost all enemies display fairly dimwitted AI. Mastering the art of strafing while scoring consistent hits is a must for those sudden close encounters. A significant part of the game is spent both going solo and fighting in small groups with your AI teammates, which are usually helpful enough if you do your part to stave off enemies so they are not butchered. The Medics and "Techs" are especially helpful to refill your life and armor respectively. But if you are more comfortable as a lone wolf then not to worry, you get plenty of time for that, particularly during the more creepy/horror section of the game. Personally I enjoy the parts where it is actually depicting the 'war' between humanity and the Strogg, and thus you have some small squad-based combat. The horror parts rely mostly on absurd amounts of gore and shock value, which to me after a while is more depressing than scary. These areas also (and the game in general) leave much to be desired for music and audio outside of sound effects of combat and groans/weird crap. Halo knows how to pump you up a bit with some music themes, id should maybe take a lesson for their less horror-driven areas. As far as plot, the story is interesting enough, but the ending seems kind of abrupt and the final fight was kind of easy once you figured out what to do. I played on the second hardest difficulty out of 4 choices for reference. Sometimes the 'leaders' of your squad make asinine decisions compared to real life, ie, hey, YOU, go on this dangerous solo mission while I apparently do nothing. Or if you secure something they love to leave a single guy behind to guard it, cause you know, he can handle dozens of enemies by himself. Future humanity **** at organizing for war. But I digress, it's obviously more for game play reasons than it is to make sense. Overall a decent campaign. Multiplayer is kind of weak and has no bots without installing mods. Worth a bargain price, which by the age of the game you should be able to get.

Not sa awesome as Quake 2 was, sure, this game is still very good. It's a bit linear as for me, but shooting and fighting enemies are extremely fun, especially on hard mode, especially with some tweaks making corpses undisappear. Beatiful game I come back from time to time.

This is my favourite single player FPS of all time to date beating HL1. Although I did need to edit the .def files inside the .pak files to get the weapons to behave the way I liked. It's one of those sci-fi shooters with great battles and a nice selection of weapons. Plus excellent characters and superb mapping/graphics and no bugs. I never liked the other quakes but this one's hit my tastes perfectly. Great job to the guys at Raven for this most awesome game.

Very boring first person shooter with stupid enemies, boring weapons and only a few good levels. It's one of the games you never play a second time. Many levels lack details and feel somewhat unfinished. The difficulty level is not constant. there are several unfair situations that can get newbies into trouble. If you want a good game with detailed levels and creepy enemies, buy Doom 3.
