It’s simple: did you enjoy Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and would you like to enjoy another helping of beautifully designed platforming sections and boss fights that are some of the best ever seen in a 2D game? Well, don’t think twice: the Mask of Darkness DLC is a must-have.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Mask of Darkness is what every expansion should aspire to. It introduces an interesting new story, new challenging environments and enemies, but doesn't stray too far from what made fans love the original. It's a few more hours of what can be described as more of the same, but that's meant in a complimentary way. The platforming challenges, nonlinear exploration and epic boss battles are why Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is such a great game, and fans can expect to see more of that in Mask of Darkness. Most fans will be able to finish it in around five hours or so, but the quality of that time is well worth the price of admission.

I went into this game with very little expectation, largely due to Ubisoft’s recent antics, which have contributed to its plummeting reputation. However, this game simply blew me away… I can’t remember the last time I yearned to return to a game, yet also wished for some restraint because I want to savour every moment of this masterpiece.
The music, character design, gameplay, and fantastical level design—complemented by its beautiful art style—come together perfectly. It is simply chef’s kiss. However, the more I enjoy this game, the more I mourn the developers who never got the chance to expand the world they created. And the more my feelings of contempt for Ubisoft grow. A heartfelt thank you to the developers who gave us a glimpse of the potential an Ubisoft title can rise to in the modern era, and shame on the executives who thought they knew better.

Mask of Darkness presents a good reason to return to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, offering a new area to explore filled with intense platforming challenges and some fun boss fights, all at a budget price.

Although it fulfills the desires of those who wanted more Prince of Persia, Mask of Darkness is not an essential chapter to the base game. The difficulty spike shows that the expansion's intended audience is made of the players who enjoyed the precision platform segments, but the expansion doesn't add much beyond that, not even in terms of story and art direction. In the end, it's a good piece of content to play, but relatively unnecessary, recommended only to enthusiasts.

For under a fiver and with around five to six hours of content, the Mask of Darkness is practically an essential addition for fans of The Lost Crown. Offering an intense experience; as well as a surprisingly compelling story that fills in many of the blanks from the original game. Recommended.

The very high difficulty and taking away all of the upgrades brings it down a notch, but it's still worth playing.

I platinum trophied the base game, so I decided to give the DLC a try. Honestly, I was disappointed. Something felt off. I didn’t care for the new platforming mechanic of slicing your sword at a giant ball to catapult you skywards. Many times I hit the ball only to plummet to my death. The new blades appearing out of thin air, kind of felt cheap because it basically became an exercise of getting surprised hit, repeating knowing where it was going to appear, to only get hit by another. Wash rinse repeat. All in all, meh….

Might have been fun as a standalone title but if you play this immediately after 100%ing the base game like I did then it feels slow and painful to play. The enemies are so annoying to fight, Wak-Wak trees are too sparse and the level design is so bad you can softlock yourself in the first 10 mins of gameplay.
