Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Remarkable spin-off of two years old spidey game. It does not bring anything new or spectacular compared to its older brother, but it looks amazing and plays more than well. [Issue#308]

It may not offer anything substantially new compared to the 2018 PS4 Spidey game but Miles Morales plays great and looks even better. Miles himself is a likeable hero (albeit it with some annoying co-stars) and the open-world action is just as enjoyable as ever. It's a bit pricey for what you get but the game benefits from the shorter run-time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales may not be quite as packed with content as the original, but it stands out as an essential story in Insomniac’s Spidey Universe. It earns its spot as a fantastic follow-up, telling a wonderful Miles-specific story while improving upon the fundamentals of the first game with distinctive moves and enemies. And it’s an excellent way to break in your new PlayStation 5; it looks spectacular, loads fast, and makes fun use of the DualSense controller, the directional audio, and more. But regardless of which generation you play it on, it’s a worthy followup to one of the best superhero games ever made.

With an improved look and no loading times at all, Spider-Man Remastered brings a beloved adventure and one of the greatest superhero games on PS5.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a clear upgrade of the original concept. The feeling of being the Spider-Man is constantly there, especially when we swing through a technically impressive Manhattan that we have never seen before in games. It is simply a demonstration and a new standard for how open, endless worlds can be built with the help of the next generation of consoles.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is effortlessly cool. The overall gameplay structure may prove samey for those who failed to fall in love with Insomniac Games’ previous effort, but everyone else will have a blast with this generous spin-off story. Great characters, tons of activities, and some epic set-piece moments round out a must play superhero romp – and with the developer on this kind of form, we can’t wait to see more of the full-scale sequel that it’s inevitably cooking up.

Perhaps inevitably, on PS5 the game itself almost feels like a secondary concern to the tech demo but developers Insomniac deserve credit for delivering an experience at once both familiar enough to appeal to fans of the first game but also with a strong identity of its own.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was still an amazing experience for me. The winter setting really stood out, swinging through a snowy New York with all the lights and holiday atmosphere just felt incredible. It gave the whole game a different kind of energy compared to the first one. The story was awesome too. It felt more personal and focused on Miles finding his place, and that part really worked. You could feel the stakes without it getting too overwhelming. Gameplay-wise, the venom powers were easily the highlight. They made combat feel fresh and satisfying. The camouflage, though, didn’t really land for me. It wasn’t introduced in a way that made me want to use it much, so I barely touched it throughout the game. Even with that, I had a great time. It’s a bit shorter, but everything else, from the atmosphere to the story, was strong enough that I didn’t mind at all.

The snowy Harlem winter backdrop, vibrant licensed soundtrack, and Miles's kinetic bio-electric Venom powers inject immediate punch and kinetic flair into combat compared to Peter’s foundational moveset. His delightfully unrefined yet expressive web-swinging animations bring genuine personality and joy to soaring across Manhattan. However, clocking in at barely seven hours, the brief storyline anchored by a melodramatic, weakly motivated antagonist in the Tinkerer leaves it feeling squarely like a glorified, full-priced standalone expansion rather than an ambitious evolutionary sequel. Recycled city geography and paint-by-numbers Roxxon base clear-outs further reinforce an enjoyable, mechanically slick, yet undeniably modest half-step.

Look the game is pretty and combat is tighter than SM1 for simplicity but that's about it. The swinging feels very hand holding and heavier than SM1 though when miles is going he moves very fun and that's about it for the good of this game. The story is terrible to say the least, your usual misunderstood villains apart from the obvious evil white corporate overlord *Yawn* Everyone who isn't white is basically an angel or misunderstood. It's very boring. The Trickster or whatever she is called who is the "Villain" is so boring I just can't express that enough. It's optimised both good and bad, good because it runs at 60fps bad because it will make the PS5 fan sound like the PS4 used to. I've never had my PS5 that loud and only played for a couple hours due to thinking this game might actually burn out my console. Miles himself is just not that great of a character either he's very one note and also sounds and behaves very effeminate, his voice can be grating. He's just not as good or complex as Peter with nothing memorable. So to sum it up if you like SM1 and don't mind a very weak story, boring villains and not much else go ahead and buy it.
