It’s by no means very deep, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do – with a few fun little twists along the way, and while managing to come together with a satisfying conclusion. While it’s by no means the best game that I played in 2020, it certainly made the list, and if you’re as much a fan of these same type of unique experiences as I am – I’m willing to bet you’ll find a lot to love about Mad Rat Dead, too.

But with the help of an excellent soundtrack, it’s an experience that feels wholly original, even if it’s not the first game to blend the platforming and rhythm genres. It can be a tricky game at times, but with the help of the rewind function, it’s one that feels relatively breezy overall, letting you just sink into the music and bust out those sick moves.

I loved my playthrough of this game. The S - Tier soundtrack, The likeability and personality of each character, The fun gameplay that rewards mastery of the level designs. This is one of my favorite games of all time. I do have some problems with the game though. On your first (few) playthrough(s) the level design feel like trial-and-error and the game also doesn't have a lot of post game content. Once you finish the story mode, all you have left is the 6 bonus songs to play in free play and the Hard version of each song (which will take you a very long time to S+ Rank each song!) This game is amazing but I would not recommend the price of $40, try to catch it on sale. Also I'm really confused on why the title wasn't brought to Steam or the Xbox platforms, I believe the game would have done really well on Steam (especially with custom levels and songs).Amazing game. Please play it!

It’s not a stretch to say that NIS’ rodent-themed rhythm game might have very well created a new sub-niche of the rhythm game genre. Not only does Mad Rat Dead succeed as both a rhythm game and a platformer, but it masterfully mashes the two together—creating a new and beautiful Frankenstein’s Monster of genres in the process. It’s easy to see that NIS’s new title has a whole lot of heart.

It was a bold move for Ippon Nichi to go in this direction with an already packed release schedule full of stalwarts in the JRPG genre. Thankfully, it's a gamble that has paid off. Mad Rat Dead initially will frustrate as players get to grips with the early stages, but in truth most are likely to keep hitting that restart button to enjoy both the excellent soundtrack and gorgeous visuals. It's a morbid but fascinating 'tail' that may be a huge departure from the usual studio offerings, but a very welcome one.

Mad Rat Dead is a quality rhythm-based platformer that you may not have been expecting. If you can get past the problematic jump attack, you get to experience a blissful and upbeat soundtrack across an addictive gameplay loop and surprisingly unique story.

It’s off the beaten path of platformers, but it also has a free demo to check out and once you experience that, you’ll either be sold or you’ll know it’s not for you. If it clicks with you, it sticks with you, though, and Mad Rat Dead is a surprisingly addictive game that makes you think about things differently after you play it.

I love parts of Mad Rat Dead. The music is incredible. It looks fresh. Even the concept and the questions it asks get you thinking in a good way. But it can really be frustrating. I think perhaps if the time limits weren’t in place, it might have felt more manageable? Maybe if I could have chosen my inputs, to create something more comfortable for extended gameplay sessions? There are lovely elements to it, but sometimes its gameplay gets in the way of really enjoying the ambiance.

Great gameplay, soundtrack, story and most importantly super fun! Can be quite challenging on hard mode.

I bought Mad Rat Dead because I had fun playing Dance Dance Revolution back in the day and because that rat is positively adorable. This is a game that requires time and patience in order to excel at; it rewards you for remaining calm despite its intensity, yet can be very punishing if you allow yourself to hesitate or get too far ahead of yourself. While it could've used a few more months of testing in development, its bugs are entertaining and are possible to mitigate with practice. An excellent foil for the anxious perfectionist type.
