Feel Free Games has done a really good job at marrying up many of our beloved cozy RPG elements. While there are a few things I’d love to see expanded upon, Luma Island is a treasure to behold, packed with content. And yet it seems there’s much to look forward to as well. I’ve had so much fun on Luma Island and will continue to do so for many hours yet. This is one of my top games for the year.

Luma Island offers something for everyone with a love for relaxing and inviting games. Grinding aside, the farming, crafting, and exploration aspects are all equally viable experiences. There are some minor frustrations and a few shallow moments, but on the whole Luma Island offers an endlessly appealing escape from the real world.

I bought it on a whim during the autumn sale, thinking I’d play for an hour before bed… next thing I know, it’s 3am and I'm in pondering how to fake a cough at work tomorrow so I can get back to playing again. The game is basically chill farming, decorating your farm, fishing with a twist (you get to chase the fish), exploring caves and temples with puzzles and levelling up different professions at your own pace. The loop is super smooth. I never really felt like I had to grind, you’re just naturally progressing while doing whatever you feel like that day. Want to spend the whole evening fishing? Go for it. Feel like mining and clearing out a temple? Nothing is stopping you. It's got 3 difficulty modes: cozy, adventure and hero mode. If I've had a lot of stress at work, I switch to cozy mode. Everything is less demanding and just flows at a less hectic pace. And yes, unlimited inventory is chef’s kiss. As a chronic hoarder, I cannot overstate how nice it is to pick up everything without playing Tetris in my backpack. The Lumas are adorable and actually useful. They each have a skill that comes in handy, and getting a new one always feels exciting instead of “oh cool, one more thing I’ll forget exists.” Oh and the art style... it's just so pretty! It honestly takes me back to the PS3 era. Screenshots don’t really do it justice. Go watch some Let's Play vids on YouTube to see what I mean. It's just gorgeous. I haven't tried co-op yet but I'll update this review if I get round to it. I hear it's a ton of fun though and a bit easier when there's more of you to help fight enemies and gather resources for bigger construction projects etc. The less good bits: - There are a lot of items and it's sometimes a bit difficult to figure out where to find stuff that's needed for a recipe or for a construction project. Sometimes I was like, “I swear I’ve seen this ingredient before… somewhere.” Better filtering/searching in the inventory and in chests would help. - If you’re not used to controller play, some of the more action-y parts (like certain fights or temple sections) can feel a bit rough at first. None of this broke the game for me though. It’s cozy, pretty, and way more addictive than it looks at first glance. Easily a thumbs up from me and I’m probably going back in after I finish writing this.

The decision to not make the farm/explore sim more tolerable was a good choice. I will happily recommend Luma Island.

Luma Island is a nice and cosy game to play either alone or with friends, with plenty to do and discover. However, it can be very grindy, tedious, and doesn’t really provide much of a challenge.

Luma Island is a no nonsense crafting game with lovely exploration, but everything starts to feel a bit samey after the first few hours.

Overall this game is perfect for the genre as it's a pleasant cozy game to play if you want to unwind from a long day or simply play something that doesn't require to stress for it. It's perfect to play with a partner or a friend and I had a lot of fun with it. Technically speaking, the game is very well done and the retro feeling graphic style is masterfully balanced to hit a perfect spot between retró and modern. The cute but complex animations and the skillful use of the lighting system with its colors that set the perfect mood are an incredible surprise coming from an indie game. There's a lot of attention to details in the graphic/technical aspect of this game, even in small things that I would have never expected: such as for example when building fences and mixing styles, in the point of contact they adapt incredibly well to each other making it aesthetically pleasant. There are three things that I would improve to make this game even better: 1) the audio, as it's quite basic and it hasn't been given the same love and attention that other technical aspects got 2) the gameplay repetitiveness on the long run, while changing scenarios, the things to do stay exactly the same 3) professions don't really matter, as the only purpose is to make money out of them but don't grant any type of special skill/perk. In conclusion, this game hits the spot perfectly and beyond if you are looking for an easy cozy game to relax with. The game is clearly not meant to be hard nor graphically realistic either. Anyone that buys this game and then complains about the above factors it's clearly delusional.

another lame crafting game with no danger. you don't even have a life or energy bar. there is a temple with sort of combat but it only gives you one life to try it than you have to start again from scratch. the graphics are very poor too
