It doesn't improve on its own formula, has archaic graphics and a sloppy camera. All of this puts a damper on the gameplay experience, but it doesn't mean its not fun. Gungrave OD is fun, but its fun for only a short while.

A lot of style with very little substance makes Grave a dull boy.

Usually a sequel improves on the original, but the graphics in OverDose are a little more bland and pixilated than they were in the first game.

Compared to the first game this is one step forward five steps back. The combat is faster and more fluid in some aspects but the enemy design is worse, the auto aim on your guns is worse, the lock on might be one of the worst in all of gaming, your shield is much weaker and takes way to long to recharge, and every combat encounter is over stuffed with annoying enemy's that its just a slog to get through.

Has it where it counts, however, as it offers a really good looking version of the anime characters. Additionally, it plays out cutscenes in the game engine that looks almost as good as most modern anime.

One hell of a fun game to play, especially for only $15US.

OD takes the intensity of its predecessor and raises it to the ump-teenth power, with double the game length, two additional playable characters, and an involving story that puts some anime to shame.

Sure, there are other, better games out there, but for fifteen dollars, Gungrave: Overdose is just too good to pass up. If you like action games and love destruction, then grab this game, gear up, and get ready to overdose.

While that is indeed ridiculously cheap, especially for a brand-new game, you're really paying for carpal tunnel. There are better button-mashers, better shooters, and better games based on anime licenses out there. Don't waste the money.

There are more stages and enemies the second time around, but this somehow actually adds tedium rather than value. [Dec 2004, p.92]

Playing Gungrave OD, there's a nagging sensation that the design team experienced the original through a shop window...In attempting to meet criticisms of Gungrave's single-minded focus, that focus has been squandered. The result is unlikely to satisfy. [May 2004, p.110]
