For me, the Gothic Remake is the ultimate gaming highlight of 2026—the refinement of a classic and a sheer delight for action-RPG fans! Only technical flaws and a somewhat overly deferential adherence to the source material detract from this fan dream come true.

Gothic 1 Remake is one of the most confident games of the year. It does not compromise on the 2001 vision of giving the reigns to the player and has next to no guidance through a merciless and unforgiving world. This leads to a gameplay experience that is perfect for some, but off-putting for others, but the promise of making the original Gothic accessible through large and small changes, most notably the presentation of the game, is thoroughly fulfilled.

Gothic 1 Remake looks great, feels amazing to play, and there are so many great choices you can make here. You can be a mage, a warrior, the ultimate bowman or anything you see fit. Plus, following the game’s story will bring many exciting challenges on its own, from using spells to fighting unexpected enemies. Overall, it’s an excellent adventure that everyone should check out, especially if you never played the original. Gothic 1 Remake is the ultimate version of a cult classic, and being able to relive this genre-defining RPG with all the modern bells and whistles was a delight.

Brilliant, bizarre, and a bit too obnoxious for its own good, Gothic 1 Remake is a solid remake of a hugely influential RPG. Dedicated to keeping the deeply unique and unfriendly spirit of the original alive, this still feels like little else, though I can't help but wish it was willing to add more polish.

The Gothic 1 Remake is a beautiful graphical upgrade of one of the most incredible RPGs of all time, and I have no doubt that returning fans will love it. However, the game’s performance issues dampen the mood, and certain new bugs and a lack of quality-of-life improvements make it less than a perfect remake. These issues and the lack of modernizing polish may also make it harder for new players to get into the game, especially when paired with the obviously and purposefully dated, difficult gameplay.

Gothic is an idiosyncratic and sometimes stale remake, with a multitude of technical issues. Yet the purity and strength of the original game’s vision shines through.

The spotty performance and the lingering clunkiness keep it from greatness, and not every player will vibe with a game that actively refuses to make their life easier. But if you give the Colony the time it demands, you will find one of the most immersive RPG worlds ever made, looking better than it ever has.
