The game has great controls. Everything is clearly visible, despite the brutal turmoil all around. A harsh critic might be able to point out the lack of a map, but the question is whether the lack of the ability to get your bearings quickly wasn't an intended part of the dark game. And if the blood, madness and tentacles weren't enough, you can jump into Endless mode and experience it all again, and even more directly! [Issue#320]

Forgive Me Father offers an evening or two of fast, somewhat fun, but mostly simplistic and repetitive FPS action, served along a paper-thin pseudo-Lovecraftian tale that few will care about. Once this one or two evenings are done, there's no reason to keep on playing this nice, but otherwise forgettable shooter.

With its monotonous gameplay and dull story, Forgive Me Father makes Cthulhu sad.

I played Forgive Me Father from 2022 on PC. It's another modern "boomer shooter" with a style reminiscent of 90s shooters. I've heard both positive and negative reviews about this game. The main feature is that the entire game is styled after the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and the story also references his themes. I'm not a fan, but for those who are into that, it will be very appealing.Visually, apart from the setting, the quality is very high; it's clear that a lot of effort was put into it, and everything looks good.Gameplay-wise, unfortunately, it's a completely standard modern arena shooter—quite decent, but on its own, it feels somewhat pointless. The paradox is that almost all modern shooters, especially those trying to imitate retro, are fast-paced, flashy, high-speed arena shooters, while real 90s shooters weren't like that. 90s shooters were slower, and nothing was rushing, screeching, or whistling at sonic speeds every two seconds. They involved methodical exploration of levels, resource management, and so on.Forgive Me Father isn't a lightning-fast twitch shooter, but you move from arena to arena throughout the game. Overall, it's quite decent—I’d even say the gameplay is much preferable to modern Doom-style shooters, but arena shooters are already tiresome. There is a skill tree, but it’s not very interesting. Weapon variety and excitement are lacking, clearly showing a lack of talented game design. Level interactivity is zero (although levels are beautiful and diverse). Boss design is poor: the first boss is painfully difficult, while the final boss was defeated on the first try. Overall, the battles with bosses aren’t particularly **** music is simply excellent—my respect for that.Overall, even though I criticized it, the game is OK. If you love boomer shooters, then go ahead and play it—6/10.

This game is a great boomer shooter if you are just mostly interested in the art style or gunplay. The art of each gun and their upgrades that change the style of the guns look phenomenal with the whole Lovecraftian style, and the guns themselves all mostly feel entirely different while also feeling great to shoot. However, the rest is rather lacklustre. The story (or atleast the story telling) is never shown but just told either through rare lines from the narrator or by random written texts on floors and walls that even then is rather confusing to begin to follow. At many stages as im trying to understand the story, im left wondering why im doing this currently and how i managed to get here from the previous stage.
The level design can also be rather confusing and personally rather "thrown together last minute" at many parts, especially at the beginning but gets better later down the playthrough.
Although I wouldnt recommend this game if you want a story or consistent experience, if you are unbothered by those, go ahead and play it because the most fun I had was discovering the new weapons and their awesome new designs with each upgrade to their lovecraftian forms.
Otherwise though, Forgive Me Father 2 seems to have fixed most of the problems polluting this game. So if you want the same style and feeling with a better experience, play the 2nd.

A fairly fun game, boomer shooter games and those like minded like this have never stuck with me very long but this one hit a nice sweet spot both with its fast combat that at times could be a bit tedious with crowded hallways and less then stellar bosses, and its highly realized design and atmosphere. Some bugs do plague the later stages with stuttering, freezing and frame drops. Though most of these issues can be solved by just closing down the game and restarting. I thought the final boss was a bit anti climactic as i didnt need to learn his attack patterns or anything. Took me about 4 tries of just pelting him with my tommy gun to get him to go down. The story being broken up into these optional notes and clues to find didn't do it for me personally. Overall though it was definitely a nice change of pace from what im use to and it stood out well among all the other shooters ive played and it has a great run time that doesnt ever feel like it's out worn its welcome.

H. P. Lovecraft made into a comic book made into a video game, a breathless shooter accompanied by an awesome metal soundtrack. The guns are fun and their upgrades interesting, there are two different playable characters - yes, there are also blemishes, but you definitely shouldn’t miss this indie FPS.

This game knocks the aesthetics out of the park. Gameplay is fast, unforgiving and loads of stressful fun.

Forgive me Father delivers well on its premise. There’s a real sense of passion and identity to this game. From the story to the visuals to the level design, you can tell the developers have a lot of love for the genres they are working with. There creativity pays off with a great game that pays homage to retro games and films alike. Other than some minor issues that can be ironed out in an update, the game is a fantastic shooter horror that old and new gamers will get a kick out of.

There's a lot to love about the game, especially if you turn down certain elements in the audio options. Classic shooters live or die on a handful of core elements, and for the most part, Forgive Me Father meets those needs: a strong shotgun that decimates enemies, fast-paced action that constantly has you adjusting tactics, and hidden secret areas scattered across the levels. Some of this falls to the wayside when you're craving the next ammo drop that the game refuses to provide you, but it's an otherwise enjoyable shooter that's dripping with character. It provides plenty of joy with a dose of Cthulhu madness on the side.

Forgive Me Father mixes the tried and true mechanics of classic FPS's with an atmosphere so thick it couldn't be cut through with a hail of bullets.

Forgive Me Father is not a bad game and knows how to give good moments, which will surely be appreciated by fans of the genre to which it belongs, that of vintage first-person shooters. Too bad that the many ingenuities of the development team are evident, which failed to avoid some design shortcuts or the use of some not-so-exceptional gimmicks to put the player in difficulty. All in all, you might tolerate them, but they certainly keep them from excelling.

Desription:
It is as if John romero on drugs, Kamarak was doing a first draft **** on unreal 4, the Darkest dungeon illustrator and a real garage band inspired on cosmic horror decided to make a game. By moments, Minimalistic music. Confusing level design.
Usually has beginner level design, but adds some make up by adding great to amazing visual effects.
A word on basic level design: It falls under the "press the switch and wait for the platform while enemies are spawning" or "red key red door" trope a little too often. Level design really hurts the experience, It feels really old school, like the Doom times when creators were experiencing with WADs.
Bosses are mildly fun, as they are thought beyond being bullet sponges, but some dynamics for fights are cumbersome (big fish) or bothersome (Glithc), the first one was really fun and amazing.
The gameplay contains rpg elements, with branches and decisions, which i a good thing.
The soundtrack, when out of the one chord keeps progressing and gets to great Hights, I really have some tunes engraved on memory and loved parts or specific tracks.
Enemy and weapon design rises the bar a lot with branching weapons based on the rpg tree the game is really fun.
If you like boomer shooters this is as boomer as they make them but with a beautiful visual and musical twist and a silly little story that is told in an interesting yet simple way. Worth every penny.

It's really fun boomer shooter, it has a lot of different weapon upgrades possible, cool lovecraftian atmosphere and optional story fragments for curious people. Level design is kinda boring tho, enemy models could be less clunky, I'm also not a big fan of OST, but that's just not my kind of music.
SummaryAs the only one left with full senses, you embark on a journey in search of answers and relief in this FPS game that is created in a distinctive retro horror comic book style and feels as if it came straight out of Lovecraft's books. Be aware of your madness level which dynamically changes during gameplay and gives you additional powe... Read More
