Double Dragon Revive is a lazy sequel. Although the developers tried to adhere to the spirit of the original, they failed in the task of updating the gameplay to modern standards, drowning in goofy mechanics, unoriginality, and boredom.
70
The classic fighting game has been revived in a modern version, but it doesn't bring a more intense experience or significant improvements.
75
Double Dragon Revive is quite fun to play, especially in co-op. It has a few shortcomings, such as the graphics and a boss-related bug in the stage, but nothing that affects the gameplay. With three playable characters, the replay factor is strong, and the extra modes add both challenge and longevity to the game.
6
It's not quite the triumphant return the Double Dragon fans were hoping for, and the presentation leaves much to be desired, but it has enough to attract the attention of the beat 'em up fans in general.

Double Dragon Revive was a real surprise — one of those games we didn’t expect much from, only to realize we had unfairly underestimated it. Yuke’s work is a smart evolution not only of the series it belongs to, but of the entire beat ’em up genre as well. It’s a genuinely satisfying title in its core elements, falling short only due to the lack of extra modes. Apart from that, it’s truly an excellent Double Dragon — one to be experienced, one punch at a time.

Double Dragon Revive isn't a complete disappointment, but it doesn't completely captivate either. It's a prime example of a project that works just enough to entertain, especially when the action heats up and the combat system shows its potential, but never really pushes the envelope. Arc System Works has crafted a respectful and reasonably solid beat 'em up, but it lacks a clear vision: a comeback that doesn't know where to look, torn between reverence for the past and a fear of fully modernizing itself. The result is an honest title, even enjoyable for fans of the genre, but inevitably destined to fade away without a trace, especially when compared to far more successful experiments like Neon or Gaiden. Perhaps wait for a price drop before giving it a chance.

Double Dragon Revive is a game that tries to be many things: a tribute, a relaunch, a modernization. It manages to evoke the past with respect, but stumbles in the present due to a lack of vision and polish. It's a title that may entertain nostalgics and offer a few hours of arcade action, but it's unlikely to leave a lasting mark on the modern beat 'em up landscape. The dragon is back, yes, but its roar sounds more like a cough.

Double Dragon Revive is no revival of its franchise. If anything, it feels like mindless filler. The graphics are nice (though it seems that’s a rare opinion), the combat is solid, if incredibly simple, and the levels don’t do enough to really excite or tear away from what quickly becomes a repetitive tedium. The game feels terrified to try anything new and therefore settles for mediocrity, providing just enough to briefly entertain a player before failing to offer anything more.

Double Dragon Revive doesn't quite hit the mark, but does do some things right. The combat gives glimpses of greatness, but there's a lot going on with that combat. Limited space and room within levels mixed with random platforming/puzzle sessions is part of the reason the genre moved on to greater things. These elements didn't necessarily need to be revisited especially when other recent Double Dragon titles didn't try to do this. Yuke's seemed to go for a more serious tone with this release, and while Streets of Rage 4 was able to get away with a serious tone, it doesn't completely work here. It may be due to the fact that it feels more like a modern anime rather than a ninja gang story from the late 1980s. Revive may have also stuck out more if there hadn't been so many chances at reviving the series in recent years.

A dull reboot of a legendary franchise, Double Dragon Revive mixes tedium with wonky movement, boring stages and annoying bosses for an ultimately unfulfilling experience.
