Delta Force from developer Team Jade is a wonderful free-to-play tactical shooter. It is driven by a massive 64-player online mode featuring gigantic and towering maps, while also containing some reprieve in its Operations mode that is more personal and linear. The game needs a bit more balance in its player selection at the moment, and a controller option, but as of right now it looks to be on the right track.

Delta Force hits the mark as a challenging tactical shooter, but it lacks the original ideas and authenticity to be a real hit.

Delta Force is both a good large-scale PvP shooter and a serviceable extraction shooter, equal parts solid and unremarkable at each.

An entertaining one-stop-shop for competitive multiplayer action, but the recently released Black Hawk Down campaign is an unpleasant war simulation in all the wrong ways.

Where Black Hawk Down bombards you with exasperating shootouts and tedious escort missions set against a background of jingoism, its competitive modes struggle for the refinements of a game made a decade ago. [Issue#409, p.112]

As is always the case with these types of things, install and play Delta Force at your own discretion. For a free-to-play shooter, it’s a solid game, but nothing too special. Worth trying out for the sake of a new shooter, but it probably won't tempt you away if you're happy with your current multiplayer game or if you object to kernel-level anti-cheats. Of course, these are all still just my initial impressions - it takes time to get a comprehensive feel for how well a PvP mode like Warfare is working, and there are still a few Operations I haven’t explored, so I’m not quite ready to give a final verdict until I’ve played on the live servers. However, I can say that the extraction mode is a lot of fun in the early going, and I enjoy the scale of Delta Force’s PvP encounters even if I’m not yet sold that this style of gunplay is the right match for that action. It’s at least clear this is a competent free-to-play shooter that can cater to a few different FPS tastes, but it remains to be seen if it has the staying power to keep my interest once the initial novelty wears off.
