Chronicle of Innsmouth: Mountains of Madness does a decent job of honoring its inspirations. The characters are trapped in a bizarre world full of inexplicable horrors and have no choice but to keep slogging through the nightmare, because the only other option is to lock themselves away in an asylum and wait for the apocalypse. Whatever problems I may have had with the puzzles — and I certainly didn’t enjoy going to the internet for help twice — the game gets the feel of Lovecraft right, and that’s worth overlooking a few awkward design choices.

After surviving the first Chronicle of Innsmouth, Lone Carter returns in Mountains of Madness, which attempts to ambitiously expand its predecessor’s narrative scope but is unable to successfully scale that particular peak. There’s a lot to like and a noticeable graphical improvement, but ultimately this entry will go down as the weaker of the pair.

Sometimes, less is more. Chronicle of Innsmouth: Mountains of Madness is a game that knows its limits and strives to do its best with the resources it has. The story is short, but well written and fascinating, the English acting is good and background illustrations are often inspiring. Considering that the team is small and so was the budget, their work deserves to be praised.

Mountains of Madness is an adventure that clearly aims at two specific target groups: the fans of H.P. Lovecraft and the unrepentant fans of traditional point 'n' click adventures. It may not be able to satisfy either of them to the fullest, but it is an honest endeavor and the almost six hours it lasts will not be considered as wasted.

The wonderful background art and the interesting main idea are to be commended, but whether these are enough to overcome some amateurish writing elements, poor animation and plainly bad voice acting, it will depend on how much of a hardcore "Cthulhu-ist"/ adventure gamer the player is.

If you’re a fan of 90s adventure games, or a fan of Lovecraft, and are willing to push through Mountains of Madness’ more taxing puzzles, you’ll get a kick out of it. The ending is a satisfying one that sets up a sequel without leaving you hanging. It’s just a shame that the game tries to stretch itself a little too far. As is, Chronicle of Innsmouth: Mountains of Madness is an interesting achievement, just not a great one.

SummaryThe second chapter in the "Chronicle of Innsmouth" saga. A team of scientists are attempting to be the first to reach a previously unknown chain of mountains higher than the Himalayas. Within a huge cavern they discover the alien bodies of hithertofore unknown creatures frozen in the ice walls.
