At the end of the day, Asphalt 5 does not presume to be anything else than what it is, and that's a flat-out arcade racer. It succeeds in its mission, and does so without taking itself too seriously, making it both charming and fun.

Asphalt 5 is a great arcade racer with just one glaring problem: cop chase mode. And while you can get around this event for a while, if you want to actually finish the game, you are stuck with it. It's just frustrating. But, other than this disappointing event, the rest of Asphalt 5 is a gas.

Asphalt 5 improves the road paved by previous instalments, bringing new multiplayer options, enhanced graphics, and a robust single-player experience.

Asphalt 5 encapsulates an era of mobile gaming that was unaffected by in-app-purchases, predatory marketing techniques, and advertisements. Every aspect of this game is full. There's a simple leveling system and a single currency, while having a 17 maps and 30 or so vehicles to choose from. Upgrading is linear and uncomplicated, where there is no mindless "grind" or completion of daily levels. There's "girls", that give differing bonuses, a multitude of different ways you can upgrade your cars, and a huge list of modes that make the game nearly impossible to become boring before 100% completion. The graphics are to be expected for a 15 year old game. They're blurry, but vibrant enough to keep the game exciting. It runs as smooth as butter on all modern devices (tested on OnePlus 8 Pro and Pixel 6) and it requires very little space. Local multiplayer still works and does not lag. There is some jitteryness when you eliminate police vans, but that's about it.

This might be the first user review of this game, but it is totally worth. Asphalt 5 is fun, and fast. The graphics are great, and the races are epic as ever. The cars are terrific. It is great, but not amazing. It impressed me, but not too much. (8.4)
