When it comes to horror games, you could do a lot worse than this, but you could also do a lot better. Its great puzzles belong in a much better game. [Issue#39, p.86]
That’s not to say this 2024 do-over is unworthy of one playthrough, especially now a month after release that many bugs have been ironed out. It has entertaining moments of visual splendour jostling against creeping dread but ultimately is a glimpse of unfulfilled potential.
Alone in the Dark offers the same solid story for two playable characters. But the puzzles are simple to the point of lengthy, the fighting mechanics feel awkward and there is hardly any horror atmosphere.

Why are Cthulhu games so uninspired when the source material is so good? Alone in the Dark has bad combat, terrible stealth, frustrating level design, and is buggy to boot. Controlling the characters is so clunky, it feels like a PS2 game. The story is serviceable, but not really scary or that interesting. It's fairly short, although you can play through the game with each of the two characters to double the length. There is a different personal quest for each of them that almost makes it worthwhile. I suggest giving it a pass unless you're a diehard Cthulhu fan.

Excellent game with minor flaws. The story, the characters, the atmosphere, music, sound effects, graphics are all to an excellent standard. I thoroughly enjoyed my play through with Carnby and about to jump in on an Emily play through. The combat is a bit janky (but this is not a combat heavy game thankfully). This game has a classic feel about it and is clearly well-designed and has been made with passion. Highly recommended.

It’s really nice to have Alone in the Dark back in form. And for it to have its own identity. After being such a pioneer, this series has spent so long chasing the horror genre popular trends and trying to read the lowest common denominator that it became little more than a pale imitation of other good ideas. It’s genuinely nice to have something that heads in its own direction, and is comfortable in providing a taut atmosphere and a focus on a chilling narrative rather than visceral scares. You could call it “quaint,” but I like to think of it more like a game Stephen King would like to see rather than another cash-in from the Saw writers.

Those looking for a third-person action shooter may lose patience with Alone in the Dark. However, those looking for a traditional survival horror experience, one with its PS1 roots still slightly visible, might be reminded why they fell in love with the genre to begin with. The main takeaway though, is that Alone in the Dark is finally back, playing to its strengths, and catering to those who've missed it.

Extremly underrated game. I love the riddles and exploration and the vibe. Its not bloated or overcomplicated, we need more AA experiances like this on the market. Great if you are a solo style gamer and want a fun detective experiance to chill for couple evenings. Give it a try, dont trust review score

Alone in the Dark is a surprisingly competent effort that looks back at its own legacy more than towards where the genre has gone. There's less of a focus on combat and survival with the mystery of Derceto taking up the majority of my attention. The performances from Comer and Harbour add some gravitas to a tale that can occasionally stray into theatrics but there's a solid sense of atmosphere and good foundation for whatever comes next. I do wonder about longevity with the two campaigns sadly mirroring one another. Combat, whilst not front and centre, does seem to lack menace. I'd still recommend it, for anyone curious.

Alone in the Dark is a faithful take on the original, with some smart puzzles and a charming Southern tone despite some frustrating combat.

It’s rare that I say this, but this video game probably should have been a movie instead. Honestly that’s the biggest thing I felt during this whole experience, between the live action stars, the way the cutscenes are shot and paced, the way the gameplay felt almost like an afterthought, it truly feels like they were basically trying to make a movie but decided it must be a game instead. Now, that’s not to say there’s nothing to enjoy, far from it! I really enjoyed the writing and performances, but it likely says something that I had a lot more fun just rushing through on a second playthrough on easy to see the story differences than I did on my initial go on normal where I actually had to explore.

Alone in the Dark is a game that is worth a shot when it’s cheap, or if you’re a longtime fan of the series. For everyone else, it’s best to avoid.

After the excellent surrealist horror of Alan Wake 2, which revelled in its own strangeness while also delivering a clear, compelling story, Alone in the Dark is too staid, too clumsy, and too haphazard to invoke anything other than a shrug. The mystery surrounding Jeremy’s madness isn’t worth putting up with the ponderous unravelling, while the combat and puzzling are mere shadows of Resident Evil 2’s superior design. The curse, it seems, lives on.

Alone in the Dark has been sitting in my backlog on both PC and PS5 for quite some time (I tend to buy games on different platforms depending on my mood, which often results in owning it twice!). Feeling like something spooky, I finally decided to dive into what is widely considered a mediocre game with an excellent voice cast.I played through both campaigns, which is essential to fully experience the game. Dialogue, cutscenes, and certain sections are unique to each campaign, and since they each take about six hours to complete, it’s clear the intention was for players to tackle both. Unfortunately, some puzzles and environmental elements are copy-pasted, which detracts from the overall **** graphics are solid, the soundtrack sets the mood, and the atmosphere feels like an old-school spooky noir movie. It’s dark and intriguing but never truly unsettling—more of a PG-13 level of spooks, which suits this game well. The puzzle design is engaging and never overly difficult, keeping me interested throughout. However, the game isn’t without flaws. I agree with many of the criticisms, particularly regarding the combat, which is clunky, especially during chaotic moments. The final boss battle is a mess, with glitches like clipping through the floor and frustrating camera angles. It doesn’t align with the rest of the game’s narrative and felt rushed, lowering my overall opinion. There was potential for a clever conclusion, but it seems like a poorly thought-out idea won out.Still, this is worth picking up during a sale. It’s enjoyable, spooky, and perfect for Halloween. 7/10.

Don't understand the bad reviews. Solid AA game with good atmosphere, great locations, but crappy (melee) combat mechanics. It was fun to move through the Derceto mansion. A second playthrough with the other character was also worthwhile. But there is still room for improvement. Nevertheless, a recommendation!

The only thing worse than the shooting in this game is the melee combat, and the only thing worse than the melee combat is the "stealth". Puzzles are OK, but overall too similar and pretty simplistic. Some of the voice acting performances are great (Jeremy), while others feel phoned in (Carnby). The story is intriguing at first but never quite manages to pull it all together in a way that is actually digestible for the player. If you finish the game, you will kinda know what happened, but also kinda not, and that doesn't exactly feel satisfying. Also, the finale is so ridiculously lame, suddenly the game turns into some kind of weird cartoon lol, I was laughing my ass off instead of being even the least bit scared. Level design is also pretty bad, there wasn't a single level I was excited to replay on my second playthrough. Also, the two campaigns should've interlocked and been two perspectives on the same events, instead of literally switching out who goes through all these mental scenarios.
