Valhalla Knights 3

User Scorettocs
Oct 16, 2013
Valhalla Knights 3 is a game that seems to be confused about the year. The game reeks of original PSP and not just in terms of graphics (some PSP games looked better.) The game begins with a short story clip and then you begin creating your character. This is actually one of the best parts of the game the character creation is pretty deep. After you pick your race, looks, and then class you are pushed into the world with an intro story that is confusing at best and then you are off to find a guy and begin the story. The game doesn't do much to tell you what to do and you will spend a decent amount of time wandering around trying to figure out what the heck to do. Once you get to the combat portion you'll see just how shallow the game is. Mash on the attach button, block here and there, rinse and repeat. If this game came out 5 years ago for the PSP it would be a decent game. On the Vita, it's just embarrassing, especially at full price. There are much better games to play out there. Avoid this unless you are absolutely starved for an RPG.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

Playing through this game I maid a mental checklist of just about everything a game could do wrong. Walking Dead Survival Instinct hit on all of them. Invisible walls, check. Horrible AI, check. Awful graphics, double check. Unresponsive guns that feel like a toy, check. Non-fluid animations, check. I could keep going but you get the point. This game is an insult to gamers and the people who buy games. This should have been a $10 novelty game and even at that price it would deserve the scores it's getting. The game is absolutely horrible with the only redeeming quality being that it's the only shooter where you can live in the Walking Dead world. The devs and the Activision knew full fell this game would be horrible and they are doing damage control with user reviews. It's actually worse than Alien Colonial Marines which I didn't think was possible. Hands down worst game of the year and it's pushing worst game of the decade I've played. There is absolutely no reason why this game should exist. It's only there to trick gamers who don't follow review scores into thinking it's good because of the name only and to spend their hard earned money on this game (not even sure it should be called a game.) Avoid at all costs unless you want to rent to find out just how bad it is for yourself like I did.

Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan

Etrian Odyssey games have always made me nervous when playing them. I like a challenge, but sometimes these games can take it a bit too far, especially if you don't have a lot of time to focus on the game. This is in no way a knock on the game, many people like that aspect, I just never had time. Well, Atlus seemed to focus on solving that issue with Etrian Odyssey 4. There is a casual mode that decreases difficulty, allows you to use items over and over again, and instead of giving you a game over the game sends your party back to town. This is just what I needed to get into the series. The game is beautiful, the 3D is done well, and the characters and story really bring the world to life. There is a lot of game here and it's not for the feint of heart. But, if you like a challenge (even casual is tough by the way, just not as tough as before) and want to experience a game akin to Wizardry of old, then this is your ticket.

Honestly, it's about what I expected a Call of Duty game on the Vita to be. It's nothing amazing, but it's not horrible either. The controls are very rough and take a long time to get used to. The story is disjointed and takes place across small bite sized missions which last about 5-10 minutes each (maybe 10-12 in total, forgot to count) and the visuals are muddy at best. But, at the end of the day, it's a Call of Duty game on the Vita and if you are a big fan, you'll look past a lot to have that. This should only be for the hardest of the hardcore CoD fans as the online is troublesome to find games, but the games are decent fun on the go.

Very reminiscent of the much loved Guardian Heroes. You pick up characters as you continue along the main campaign and can level them up independently and assign them weapons, charms, armor, etc. The game takes place on a 2d plane with the ability to move from forescreen, midscreen, and backscreen (three levels) at will while attacking enemies and performing movies like in a fighting game. The gameplay is fun but the game can suffer from some slowdown when there are a lot of enemies on screen. It doesn't take away from the action too much though and you'll get used to each characters attack speed and judge accordingly. You'll soon find your favorite and upgrade to the nines while enjoying a decent story filled with a lot of silliness.

Upon first look, most people will see an Asian inspired GTA clone when they look at Sleeping Dogs. It's only when you look a bit deeper that you realize the full breadth of content available to the player and the engrossing Hollywood worthy story that wraps the entire game up in a neat package. It's not perfect, but what game is these days? You'll have some finicky controls here and there if you are using a mouse and keyboard but after the third hour of gameplay, you'll know all the ins and outs and be able to drive like a pro and strut your stuff all around Hong Kong like the best of them. I can't recommend this game highly enough. I'm pleasantly surprised by just how great this game is. I was not expecting much from it but I'm getting a whole bunch out of it.

Not sure where to start with this one. It's a really bad game with a neat design. You can pick your class and then go out and take on the opposing teams. Sounds fun, but it's not. It's horribly boring with terrible controls and a lackluster community, even on day one of the game being out. I recommend you skip this one and look elsewhere for your vehicular combat enjoyment. This game wouldn't stand a chance even if it came out before Twisted Metal. The other high user reviews must be devs because I can't see anyone praising this game.

I usually have quite the short attention span when it comes to iOS games. But, for whatever reason this game has held my attention quite a bit. It's a great little game with excellent controls and a charming style to it. If you enjoy iOS action games with a hint of RP in them, you can't go wrong with Swordigo.

Ridge Racer Unbounded

This is one game that I wasn't expecting to enjoy as much as I do. For starters, remove the Ridge Racer from the game name. It's not needed and it's quite misleading. Let's just call it "Unbounded." Ok, now that that is straightened out, Unbounded is a pretty great game. You get a decent amount of cars to unlock, the levels are pretty unique and diverse, the music is great, and the controls are unique in a way (the cars are a little heavy at times) but not too unique to cause issues. The one gripe I have with the game, and it's really not even a gripe, is the difficulty. One mess up in this game and you can kiss first place goodbye and more than likely second and third place. But, don't lose hope, the devs give you a way around this. Every time you race and even if you lose, you get XP. XP opens up new cars. New cars perform better than older cars and that event you were just bombing is now bearable. Consider it racing xp grinding to a certain degree. The online component of the game is where you really see the difference against other games. As you level up and finish races, you'll open up land pieces. With this pieces, you can create your own races. The crazy races that people make will keep this game interesting for a while, no doubt. There is regular multiplayer available as well if that is your forte. All in all, the game is a solid racer. If you are a racing fan or just like arcadey racing games, you could do a lot worse. Check it out if you get the chance.

A very solid racer that doesn't require an intense amount of concentration that mobile gamers just don't have to spare. It's fun to crash through objects and go flying in the air and the controls, while they take a bit to get used to, are ultimately a great way to handle mobile racing. If you enjoy arcade style racing games, this one is one of the best.

While it may not have the polish of some of the big budget titles on the market, it more than makes up for it in charm. This sleeper hit will surely surprise more than it will disappoint, especially with it's more than capable third person combat and fun and often times humorous banter shared between comrades that you have the ability to direct. The squad combat is great, but where the game really shines is the sense of destruction you cause on your robot enemies as their armor flies off and you tear them apart. It's an awesome game that unfortunately will be overlooked by many due to it not being a big budget game.

If you haven't played this game yet, you need to get on board fast and there is no better version than this HD upgrade of the game. For the rest of us who have played it in the past, only the hardcore fans or those who haven't touched it in years need apply. The handling is the same as ever (which isn't a plus for anyone but purists) but the graphics do look a lot better. The game is fantastic and it's a must play if you haven't up until this point and at 20 bucks on Games on Demand, you really can't ask for a better way to get access to it.

There's hard and then there is too hard. This game is way too hard for practically anyone to play. When you have trouble getting past the first level, something is seriously wrong. Your hands will hurt from the odd positioning you need to do and it's just bad. The game is nice to look at from an artsy perspective, but the game fails on so many levels besides that. Don't let the name fool you. This is not some spore game wrapped around an action RPG. There is little resemblance here to Spore other than the editor that is found in the game. That's a good thing too, since the editor was one of the defining features of the mostly forgettable Spore game. What you will find in Darkspore is an action RPG that scratches your dungeon crawling itch while scratching the collecting enthusiast and artist in you. You'll spend hours building up your team, grinding away for body parts and equipment, and tag teaming bosses with either friends or random people. I rarely play co-op in games and when I do, it's usually after a couple days or after the campaign. I found myself playing the co-op on the first day though due to the ease of matchmaking and the fun to be had. Don't let the negative reviews scare you, this is a great game for dungeon crawling fans and Pokemon like collector fans alike.

Amazing game that is constantly being updated. Don't rely too heavily on the reviews you see from gaming sites since they review and then forget about it. Yes, the game had it's issues when it was released. Hell, World of Warcraft was unplayable when it came out, but the DCUO team has put out constant updates and it's really turning into an amazing online MMORPG.

If you aren't familiar with roguelikes, there is something you need to know from the beginning: roguelike games, like this one, remove all of your items and revert you to level 1 every time you die. Before you click back on your browser though, know that this isn't a bad thing. Items in the game are easy to come by and really aren't that great anyways. Dying though increased your max level and helps you gain skills and powers. So in a way, dying = **** some odd way. When you die, or complete a level, all the levels you accumulated on your current romp through the dungeon level will increase your overall level and your strength and other stats increase. The basic gameplay is dungeon crawling with similarities to Shiren the Wandered and the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. Just know that every move moves everyone else in the dungeon. It's turn based, but pretty fast turned based. If challenge scares you, you might shy away from the title, but you'd be missing a pretty good romp through a very good game.

The mechanics have been adjusted, story more thoroughly fleshed out, and bells and whistles a plenty in this engrossing handheld game that has about as much content as an MMORPG. It's dungeon crawler loot based gameplay with a side of armor customization and anime style storyline. It's a great game that will keep you occupied for hours with all of it's nuances and deep content.

A lot of the PSP RPGs you pick up at your local game store are ports from other platforms. So, as soon as I heard that Ys Seven was being made from the ground up for the PSP, it became an instant day one purchase for me. What's the difference between a port and an original game for the PSP? Load times are fast, the graphics look amazing, and gameplay designs can be implemented with the PSP in mind. That's the case with Ys Seven. Ys (pronounced like the eace in peace) Seven is actually the 7th game in the line of Ys games, but you don't have to play the prior ones. It's a standalone title made for people who may not be familiar with the series. The gameplay is fun and takes place in real time. You will travel the world and encounter and fight with enemies without any changes. You swing by hitting X, open up menu by hitting triangle, etc. The game is sort of an action RPG that's more RPG than action. If you are an RPG fan looking for something new to play on your PSP, you can't go wrong with Ys Seven. For 30 bucks, the amount of game you get is astounding especially considering it's an RPG and built solely for the PSP.

Real time strategy games just don't get any better than this. They took what worked in the original and expanded upon it creating a universe that not only puts you in the driver seat but shocks and awes along the way. The units are balanced, the gameplay is fun, and the multiplayer is fantastic as ever. I was afraid that my aging PC wasn't going to be able to handle the graphics, but it can. My PC is 3 years old with an upgraded 9000 series nvidia geforce card and it plays it fine on medium. My buddy has an even older computer and plays it fine on low. So, don't be afraid if your PC isn't up to snuff.
