If you treat yourself to the PvE campaign – especially in co-op mode – in small portions, it's a good recipe for a couple of relaxing game sessions. In the beginning at least, because over time watching the experience bar grow simply gets boring. [June 2011, p. 62]

Darkspore was the final nail in the coffin to the Spore franchise. It felt like another Diablo with the Spore-glasses on. Ultimately, it was even shut down 5 years later and can not be accessed anymore.

Okay this sounds stupid but take diablo Item systems, spore monster Creator but alot more free, Moba controls and then DUMP A DUMP TRUCK OF EDGE and holy **** you have Darkspore. you had 3 playable monsters at all times you could freely switch between with 3 player co-op it was beat'em up action and it was soo SOO good. It was weird as hell and had its own story but dear sweet jesus If it could ever come back I'd love it. The leveling and grind got really bad towards the late game but man I still think of this game from time to time.

Ultimately Darkspore failed because of technical issues and EA abandoning it. First you can't even buy it anywhere now. Probably because EA doesn't want to support new keys and registration. For a while in 2013 and later you couldn't log on. And it's a persistently online game despite being able to play solo. Then there was a bug where you couldn't save changes to your heroes equipment. Basically there are tons of server bugs with this game and since it's pretty much abandonware there's very little chance of fixes and no estimate of when fixes will come. That said the game itself is actually pretty fun. I played it a ton at first, trying to grind out all the gear to get further in. The game introduces a ton of great concepts to action rpg genre. First you command a squad of three heroes at a time and switch between them. Each brings unique skills to the table and compliment each other in various ways. This allows a ton of squad customization which is really interesting and fun. Second is the gear. There's tons of it but unlike a lot of games where you simply stack one stat only darkspore is all about balancing your gear to get the most out of it because there are a lot of unique bonuses and caps on your stats. So maybe dropping one piece for another isn't ideal but if you make two swaps now you come out ahead. You're constantly tinkering with your heroes. Where the game falls flat on its face though is randomness, story and co-op execution. First there's like zero incentive to do co-op when you can do most everything solo and the matchmaking is poor. Then the story is just bad and shallow and get this- the game doesn't end. Ever. Even after the last level you can do increasingly more difficult levels for no apparent reason. It's a cool concept I guess? But it kind of makes you feel unfulfilled. Beat the last numbered level at first is pretty neat but then you realize there's infinity levels. I guess it's kind of like regular Spore in that regard cus that game never ends either. But it's not very satisfying to a gamer. Finally I mentioned the randomness. Since some enemies are nearly invulnerable to certain dmg types if you randomly get a bunch of those on a level you're screwed, it doesn't matter how strong your heroes are. The game isn't hard per say but every now and then you just get a horrid combination of enemies and lose a level because of it. It's sad cus the game could've been epic with a better community and more campaigns but now it's just a footnote in the history of maxis and EA.

Spore is an infinitely more unique and nuanced experience than Darkspore, but in the end, Darkspore is much more likely to stick around in the gamer psyche. It may not do anything particularly new, but the way it polishes and riffs on known gaming conventions should leave you happily clicking on bad guys and collecting new body parts late into the night.

Darkspore features addictive gameplay and fun character customization, but lacks in storytelling and long term motivation.

Easily as good as Torchlight and Diablo, in a unique and futuristic environment. Combat is frantic and exciting, visuals are excellent and the playable characters are many (25). I bought this at launch and I'm still playing. :)

The game is great fast paced fun and has tons of stuff for you to loot. I love the customisation available which offers so many options. This will surely fill up your free time till Diablo 3 comes out. One word sums the game all up. Addicting.

Darkspore is long and solid but its lack of substantial innovation and repetitive missions makes this game too derivative to achieve a truly fun experience as expected.

Darkspore is a fun and simplistic online hack-n-slash game, with a 4 player co-op mode and an addictive "chain" loot system. Spore's character creation system is also present, but with 100 different creatures to choose from, the PvP has many balance issues. The PvE mode is certainly more fun, but many players will get bored very soon from the endless grinding and repetition.

Darkspore remains a humdrum deep-space Diablo, but one doomed to be defined more by what it's missing than what it offers. [June 2011, p.98]

I purchased this game 5 days ago. I'm having an absolute blast with it. The sheer variety of 'squads' you can try out with unique squad abilities leaves open a lot of experimentation. Each character plays quite differently from the next which adds so much variety to play style. The sound effects, music and visuals are quite good. Sure my computer handles beastly games that I've thrown at it, but I have no complaints over the art style chosen here. Everyone would like more finely detailed pixelated characters, yet that's a very minor quibble. As far as I'm concerned, the game runs smoothly with only 1 hickup where I froze in the editor and had to 'end task'. Has happened only once. You can play solo or co-op with up to 3 other players to do campaign missions, or you can fight 1 or 2 vs.2. I've done both solo and co-op and indeed co-op is more fun. Yet solo is fine as well and gives you a nice challenge. Game length? Not sure but I've still got a long way to go. Bear in mind, you will have replay a few missions to level up your characters to be able to effectively handle harder levels, but that's fun in and of itself. Enjoy it :) It's good fun after you level to equip your characters with the wide range of loot you've pilfered from foes.

Good games to play if you like coops rpg game. The Idea is good (monster creation etc). Quite repetitive, sometimes boring, the stages are look alike one another in campaign. Vast Squad & Equipment customization. Overall: Good, but need of CONSTANT internet connection can be found disturbing.
