Pony Island6

A very cool concept not that well executed and boring at times (the pony parts & puzzles unfortunately get old). However the third core boss battle was pure genius! Tricked me several times! (very slight spoiler on character names ahead) I think if the whole game had been running around that concept ( if satan rather than asmodeus was the one doing these kind of tricks through the game) it would have been much stronger and immersive. Pretty cool chiptune soundtrack too.

Legend of Grimrock II10

I love those guys, Almost Human is a true passionate and dedicate developer team. You can see the game is made with love and the slight flaws of the first title have been cleverly corrected. LoG 2 is a real masterpiece. A less frustrating skill system, a huge gorgeous world, a ton more variety in monsters and battle strategy, a masterful level design, hints of humor here and there, tons of secrets for careful explorers, new types of puzzles... LoG 2 has everything! Grimrock 1 was already my favorite game of 2012 and it's really impressive they were able to do even better than their first title.

Starbound3

I wouldnt say its a scam like other did. I think the team wants to make a good game, but... they dont know how to. A game has to "feel right" and a big mistake in game devlopment is to add a ton of content and **** before it does. Starbound has done this mistake full force and the exploration and combat feels extremely dull and bland. On paper and on the blog it sounds awesome and I was super excited about it but after 9 hours ( i ve tried and retried over 4 or 5 characters along the updates) i never had fun. it's really sad to say but yep, didnt have fun a single minute. Fights are slow and boring, gravity is always too low and controls dont feel nervous or tight. Muddy at best. Game is super unbalanced ( which is ok for the early beta, but its been in beta for a year now and i havent seen much change...). Character progression is boring, nothing exciting to be found in exploration. "quests" to push you to a next step feel forced and break the fun a game like terraria had in its sandbox system and freedom of exploration. Terraria had genius in the fact that you could discover everything yourself ( i never had to read a walkthrough), starbound hasnt found a way to teach the player to play the game in a clever way and instead tries to take him by the hand telling him what to do turning the experience into a fetching bore. I have lost hope in Starbound right now. I ll come back and update my review in a few months if things have evolved.

Dark Souls II5

Don't listen to the people who tell you to skip the bad reviews on this game. The game really does have issues unfortunately. I am a big fan of Deamon souls and DS 1 but the change of director for DS 2 really makes the game feel different. It's not about the game being hard... Its way easier than the two previous ones except for some oddly unbalanced parts of the game. No the real issue is that the game feels super lazy. Most of the ennemies are just ports from the previous games. Same for the items. It feels like playing Dark souls 1 again but with less interesting levels and monsters! Deamon Soul and Dark souls 1 had amazing ambiance and strange creatures, impressive bosses... Dark souls 2 throws at you nothing but zombie kind of humans and knights for hours. Even the bosses are just knights, with stronger attacks. Where the heck are my giant swamp things, blobs wearing shields and spears, giant fire breathing spiders ??? The game feels horribly uninspired and I found myself bored playing it while it just threw at me hordes of the same, basic ennemies again and again ( counting on numbers to make it difficult instead of making the ennemies themselves interesting to fight). A big disappointment for anyone looking for a true sequel to the master pieces the other souls games were.

Intrusion 210

I dont understand what's with the negative reviews here. The controls are in the style of Abuse but the jumps are a bit floaty, which is no big deal because its mostly a shooter and not a platformer. The physics DO get a lil bit in the way and there is one puzzle that can take a couple minute to deal with because some robot's body gets in the way. That's it, 2 minutes. For the rest This is an awesome metal slug abuse like. The best I have seen in years. There is not many boss battles but hear me: those are possibly the best boss battles I have ever played in a game of this genre. The last boss is AMAZINGLY EPIC. The game is pretty short, but also its pretty cheap.

Super House of Dead Ninjas10
Jul 14, 2013
This game is kinda like if you took super meat boy and ninja gaiden and mixed them together in a rogue like, endless, procedural tower. I dont understand why it isnt godly famous yet... The game design is brilliant, the pixel and especially the animations of the monsters are just amazing, and there is a HUGE variety of ennemies, weapons, sub weapons and fun bonuses to unlock through small achievements that will really affect the way you play. That was a long sentence. I apologize for that. Its a ton of fun when you start mastering the game to dash down through the tower, mowing down armies of ennemies into a blind rage (until you die). Unlocking new stuff really got me constantly replaying, never getting frustrated at my gory slo-mo deaths. Till late at night. Turning me into a zombie at work for a while. Totally worth it. The game is like 7$, and worth a good 15$ I barely have any complaints. I'd say the range of some weapons didnt seem to match the art getting me frustratingly hit a few times. The jumping takes a little time to get used to its pretty short) but once you master it its fine. Lastly, there s a couple very rare glitch. A couple times I was able to go OUTSIDE the tower, and free fall for eternity. Another time the game crashed. That's about it. Sigh. I'm done. The musics are great too. And I wouldnt say its a 16 bit game, I'd give it... 20 bits! The animations are closer to Arcade level than SNES. Done.

Da New Guys: Day of the Jackass7
Nov 28, 2012
I wasnt convinced after seeing the trailer but the game is actually pretty fun with some attaching main characters. Main drawback is the overall art and graphic design and a sometime amateurish feel to the game. However there's some neat puzzle, some original ideas and a few mini games to break from the monotony as well as a pretty solid soundtrack.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams9
Nov 24, 2012
I wasnt sure what to expect with this new episode of the Giana sisters, the DS one had been disappointing for the level design and low difficulty. Well, that was a pretty ****ing awesome surprise. This game is pretty much a super meat boy regarding the difficulty, though you get regular checkpoints to keep the frustration low. There is actually even ONE thing this game does better than SMB, its the boss fight. They are really cool, especially the last one. Overall the game keeps a nice feeling of very good old school arcade platformer while having really clever level design around the twist of jumping from the dark world to the candy world and using their respective special move. I just could not get enough of just jumping from one world to the other just to see how the environment, ennemies and even music would change. Some ennemies even get different behavior when in dark world or candy world. There s a lot of cool ideas and after finishing the game, I feel a lot of them cool be exploited even MORE. The game deserves either a level editor or an extra level pack. ( dont get me wrong, its not short. You ll have enough for your money especially with the time attack, hardcore and few other modes ). Last but not least, the composer is the same one as for the original giana sister game: the awesome Chris Huelsbeck. Its a freaking honor to have him back and justifies the purchase alone IMO :D The remixed versions of his music by Machinea Supremacy in the game kick some serious butt as well. Definitely the best platformer of the year for me.

Before the Echo4

I dont like to give bad reviews, but I actually went all the way to create an account to give my advice on this game. This game is a grindfest with rythm gameplay. They keep reusing the same songs over and over again right from the second level. You keep having to re-fight the same ennemies to get XP and the elements to create new items... There is no real RPG in the fact that you dont have anything to explore or anything. You jump from menu to menu and when ready to battle you select " battle". That's it. The story isnt compelling either but the dialogues are funny if you like slightly immature jokes. Other issue is that the musics, though nice, dont seem to fit a rythm game to me. They lack contrast and the keys you have to press dont seem to match the musics at all half of the times. Be sure to have a joypad to play too. Meh.
