Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

I think people with a lot of nostalgia for the Tales series are biasing reviews for this game. By modern standards, it has incredibly clunky controls and pretty awful music/sound design. I'm 13 hours in and the story still isn't even remotely motivating. I do not think this is a good game. It's an "ok" game. Certainly not worth $50. Maybe $30.

I normally dislike games that are this difficult, but the total package this game offers is incredible. Story (ableit light), graphics, sound, controls, combat... all amazing. I've found myself beating my head against the wall on a few bosses, but each time I fight them, I get better. The game does a great job of giving you boss encounters that you can learn with a few tries, so the frustration level never gets too high. For contrast, I fully rage quit a couple of times on Axiom Verge, and went to play something else for a while, but I haven't picked up another game since getting Hollow Knight.

What a gem. Amazing gameplay, music, and overall atmosphere. The metroid aspect is fantastic. The weaponry / tools are diverse and entertaining. The story is ok, too. Be warned, though, the game does get quite hard near the end. Learning the infinite jump trick will help. Some of the boss battles may require googling. Ultimately a very rewarding experience.

I rarely want to play this, but my spouse always wants to. It's a pretty good game.. more fun with more people. Requires people to take it seriously, otherwise it can start getting frustrating, fast. It's very repetitive. I generally feel like this is only good as a party game, where you can all laugh at each other for doing stupid things.

I was genuinely surprised with how good this game was. The combat system is fantastic, the story is pretty good, and the voice acting was mostly good. Some of the game (I'm looking at you, Ursula; also, summoning specific blades) is suuuuuper grindy, though.. and I didn't find the game to have much replay value at all. Still, well worth the purchase.

It's Skyrim portable. Hard to argue with that. Not much has changed. You get all the DLC, there are still bugs, and it's still the same amazing game it was for every other platform. I only encountered a couple of bad bugs, and both were resolved by going back a save or two (because I save frequently). I was on the fence on buying this one.. and I am very happy I decided to get it, even if it was at full price.

Maybe I just don't like X-COM. This game was a bit of fun (the humor), a lot of boring (normal fights), and some frustrating (hard fights). It also didn't feel like they did a very good job of introducing you to all the various game mechanics. I got through the first major area (fought the first major boss). I doubt I'll pick it up again, and I don't think I got my money's worth out of it.

Too difficult, with near-zero ability to tune the difficulty. I truly regret purchasing this. I can't even get past the 3rd level. The game is nothing like the trailer, unless you're able to get really lucky or really far into the game.

I had no clue what I was getting myself into with this game. I did not expect to spend so much time playing it. I'm still drawn to replay it. There's something for everyone in this game.. farming, combat, fishing, romance, relationships, that feeling of achievement from managing things. The polish and complexity is remarkable and unexpected. The music is great, too.

This game is magnificent. The universe, music, mining, metroid-esque progression.. everything is just fantastic. This is one of my favorite games for the Switch. I only wish it had more replay value.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

I found this game to be extremely hard once you get past the initial levels. There's no in-level saving, and each level is a series of death gauntlets, so you can't "put it down and come back later" without sacrificing your progress in a given level. This is really frustrating since it basically locks you into a cycle of death without the option to go play another game to cool off. I realize I'm in the minority here. It's also worth noting I've only played as the shovel knight. I'm told the other characters are more enjoyable.. I'm sure I'll try them at some point. Anyway, this is one of the few purchases on the Switch I genuinely regret, and my hope is that this review might prevent other people like me from wasting their money.

It's a lot of fun, but the frantic barrage of weaponry frequently ruins races in the final stretch. I wish there were an option to have no items in the campaign mode.

I got my money's worth, and I'm sure I'll pick it up again from time to time.. but the difficulty is just too high. There are too many random events that result in your untimely doom. The permanent bonuses you can buy with in-game currency (not freemium, thank goodness) don't offset this enough. I think I did at least 10 runs and only got to the border of Canada once, at which point I was alone and absolutely DROWNING in zombies.

This game is clearly designed for mobile phones, not for the Switch. The non-touch controls are clumsy. I'll pick this up when it hits iOS, and probably enjoy it a lot more.

PixelJunk Monsters 2

The original PixelJunk Monsters was a local co-op triumph. Some of the design decisions in this second game ruin that aspect. For example, the maps are large, and only zoom out a small amount as the two players separate. If you get farther apart than that, the second player gets warped to the first player. This makes it basically impossible for two people to multitask in different areas. Given that I purchased the game FOR the local co-op, I can't score it favorably (although it still gets a reasonably high score, as it's a good game in other aspects).
