Dune: Part One

It's a slog, but def better than Dune (1984). I wanted to like this. It has a lot of things going for it. The cinematography is beautiful. The sound design was good (but could have been better). The protagonists are likeable. This is a major improvement. Chalamet has a better written and better performed Paul than MacLachlan had in Dune (1984). In fact, everyone from Atreides comes across better in this version with the exception of Lady Jessica who is uncharacteristically frightened for nearly the entire movie. Jason Momoa stole the show as Duncan. He was great! Now, for the bad guys: Much Worse this time around. I was very disappointed here. Where the villains in Dune (1984) are larger than life and boisterous and colorful, the villains here comparatively boring - very one-dimensional. This film overall has a more somber and plodding tone while Dune (1984) managed to capture a manic kind of energy that's sorely missing here. Thankfully, there is much less exposition here for which I am grateful. However, it's been replaced by a dozen dream sequences for which I am annoyed. 90% of Zendaya's appearance is in the form of dreams. It drags. It drags to the point that I was looking at my watch and wishing it would end. That's never a good feeling. Hopefully, part 2 can fix some of these issues.

One of the Top Ten Bond Films. They carried on the tradition from previous Daniel Craig films of Bond experiencing more emotions and caring for others. The Craig films have been criticized as not being Bond enough because of this. If you fall in this camp, then No Time to Die will not be Bond enough for you. However, if you didn't mind that change and still enjoy all the action sequences, car chases, gadgets, and one-liners, then you will enjoy the ride here! This one turns the emotions up higher than we've seen before and keeps all the other ingredients going strong. Looking back on the other Craig films, this is a perfect ending for this chapter of the Bond universe :)

Overrated by the cult of Kubrick. The highlights for me are Jack Nicholson's mesmerizing performance, the excellent score, and wonderful cinematography with wonderful visuals. Definitely worth seeing for Nicholson's performance. However, the script was not very compelling (it left some of the best parts out from the book) and on a whole, it all felt very underwhelming. It was really a missed opportunity. But thank God for Jack Nicholson.

Masterful.. every element falls into place to make this a truly special film. Screenplay, direction, acting, cinematography, score - everyone brings their A-game. I was impressed with the swapping of gendered roles with Lisbeth taking on traditionally masculine plot actions and Mikael taking on traditionally feminine plot actions which was really wonderful and intelligent in a film about misogyny.

I wanted to like this... the comics are great, and a few of the X-men films are great! This could have been great too but... it just wasn't meant to be. The script was bad. It tried to do too much and be too many things. The pacing and the tone were also problematic. I appreciate the effort and vision of trying to make a hybrid film, but ultimately the superhero tropes conflicted with the horror tropes, and they diminished rather than enhanced one another. It's a shame. The acting is top notch. The special effects were okay. It's def worth seeing if you're already a fan. Otherwise, skip it.

Both overrated and a very good movie. I love the use of sound. Its suspense is wonderful! However, the plot is very simple, and the ending was meh - especially compared to what came before it.

Funny, light, thoughtful, deep, suspenseful, dark, all the things Very intelligent film that weaves together many different perspectives and tones masterfully. Several different levels to think about and discuss with others. It will leave you thinking about it for days afterward just to ponder it a bit more. Definitely tell your friends to watch it because you'll want someone to discuss it with. This is a full-course dinner that leaves you perfectly satisfied :)

Definitely the best of the sequels and arguably the best of the franchise. Phantasm II is to Phantasm what the Evil Dead II is to the Evil Dead. It is a bigger budget, more fun, more special effects, and campier version of the first that still maintains the same spirit and overall quality of the original. And basically the same storyline and setting as well.

The worst of failing franchise. The first two films were above average 80s horror fun. The third and fourth films were below average and lacked cohesion over any overarching point for existing. This is by far the worst. It's chopped up mess of ideas that doesn't resolve any of the mess that came before. But what is considerably worse than anything that came before it is the cinematography and the special effects. It's just difficult to look at. What a mess.

Very strong beginning. Too long. As the film continued, characters made stupid and unbelievable decisions to serve the plot. I am disappointed after the very strong/near perfect Hereditary. If you have never heard of Hereditary, skip this movie. The violence is horrific. Ending was predictable and unsatisfying.

A handful of sight gags does not a movie make. Critters 2 has a couple of truly classic scenes. The scene during Easter and the rolling conclusion being the most standout scenes. However, it's overly goofy and simply not scary. It feels like a bunch of random ideas thrown together with little cohesion.. like it was designed by a studio committee.

Classic 80s horror. Good mix of humour, likeable characters, and horror. What this pulls off that none of the sequels managed to capture is a sense of suspense where the characters actually feel like they're in danger. It's hard to balance with its goofiness, but Critters pulls it off nicely!

A jumbled mess but the scenes that work work well They tried to fit too much into a relatively short film. It would have benefited from adding a half-hour of character development. That being said there were a handful of scenes that worked really well. The action scenes were fantastic. A few of the more emotional scenes were good as well. Just very little coherence through it all. This film is a missed opportunity of untapped potential. You'll enjoy some of it.

this film is the ultimate in-joke. i have never thought about explaining the truth of existence in such a hilarious way. it may just change your world forever. i am interested in knowing how many people involved in this film actually understood its significance while they were making it. Do you think all the actors knew how important it was? Certainly, Dustin Hoffman had some **** acted his character far too **** must know the truth about the cosmic game he described. the fact that movie so all-encompassing can exist is as unlikely as our very own **** leaves me a fuller person than i was before :)

There's a good movie hiding in here somewhere. You're going to need to do two things to prepare for watching this movie. 1) Do drugs. 2) Bring extra drugs to take halfway through. There is a good film in here somewhere. I think cutting 30 minutes out and playing the rest at 1.5 speed would do a lot to help the finished product. Oh, and did I mention drugs?

Probably the best Halloween sequel The first half was great. It set up a few interesting possibilities. Unfortunately, it didn't capitalize on the potential it had. There were some good tense moments and some good kills/gore. But there were also some very stupid moves by characters and an unfulfilling ending. It's a mixed bag. But still light years better than the usual Halloween sequel. So go have fun and enjoy it for what it is.

First excellent original horror film I've seen in a while. There is a slow-building dread here not achieved by many other "scary" movies. There are flaws to the story but they are forgivable b/c it has great acting, pacing, use of sound and light, and it's actually scary! You will actually like the two main characters and want to see more of them. The main flaw, if it can be called a flaw, is that due to severe underfunding, we do not get a good moneyshot of the creature. We catch it in glimpses and that's scary and effective, but without a good moneyshot in the third act, it feels incomplete. Again, not the fault of the filmmakers here. But you get the feeling that with a little more money they could have made a hell of an ending!

Beautiful to look but don't let that fool you into watching this movie It's beautiful. It's very beautiful. Some of the visuals are even breathtaking. That's it. There's nothing else to the movie. The script and dialogue are physically painful to endure. The actors did what they could but there was nothing to work with. Very uneven. Difficult to tell what was supposed to be funny vs serious b/c it was just so poorly conceived and executed. I have a hunch that a lot of the dialogue was intended to be funny. It's an utter failure. So much money and time and energy went into making this movie, and for what? Our world is absurd.

Spider-Man 2 still has the most heart and is the most moving Spider-Man film. But Far From Home is the smartest... in fact, it is the smartest Marvel film to date. It's meta nature, cultural analysis, and social commentary are brilliant, fun, and engaging! It is the rare movie that invites you to come along for the ride while giving you so much to think about afterwards. Rewarding on multiple levels. Marvel has always succeeded in providing great entertainment, but this is the closest they've come to also achieving something truly important

Fantastic Disaster Film with Zombies in it! Thrilling with likeable characters you actually care about. Non-stop action thrill ride. And it hits you right in the emotions toward the end. Oh, and zombies bite people a lot. I will say they missed a perfectly good opportunity to name the film "Zombies on a Train."

The Curse (1987) meets From Beyond (1986). If you know what that means, you should frantically run to see this movie! If you don't know what that means, you should cautiously walk to see this movie. The star here is the cinematography, atmosphere, and special effects. Some scenes are simply breathtaking. The plot and the characters were more frustrating. It started out sincere and filled with so much possibility. However, there were frustrating moments where characters said/did unbelievable things. And the end is jumbled but spectacular at the same time. Cage was more uneven than usual here. Some of his choices are so jarring. There are a couple scenes in particular in which he channels his inner Donald Trump.. and while it's funny.. it's also distracting and takes you out of the movie.

The first and greatest failure is failing to cast the spell. There were too many distractions in the film that took the viewer out of the movie rather than pulling them into the movie. How is that Leia? Are they using CGI or archival footage or a combination? Wait, is that Charlie from Lost? Is he still running around a tropical jungle? I wonder if they filmed that scene in the same location as Lost? I bet this guy is Lando.. Wow that was a fast scene! It's almost like they're stuffing the film with every previous character (alive and dead) but they only appear on-screen long enough to say "Remember me!?" and disappear. What's the point? And this failure makes it much easier to notice the film's other shortcomings. There is a lack of engagement. It's hard to care for these pencil-thin characters. There is no suspense. You just find yourself just waiting for it to end. Not to mention massive gaps in logic, and characters making decisions solely to serve the mechanics of what happens next.. but it's not what the character would actually do. The viewer walks away not believing in it. It didn't happen. It didn't end that way. Very reminiscent of Lost in this regard. Maybe the appearance of Charlie was foreshadowing after all. I know none of these negative reviews are going to keep Star Wars fans from seeing this movie. But when you finally do watch it, just know that you are not alone, that you are not crazy, and that J.J. Abrams has screwed us once again.
