Dynasty Warriors: Origins5
Mar 17, 2026
This is not a good warriors game, and I don't care if the whole world praises it. Koei made a huge mistake for thinking the system needed more complexity. They added sub-menu with r1 button in previous games, and now even timed-parry with this game. That's not even a warriors game anymore.
Warriors has always been satisfying games, which means less thinking, less learning, and more satisfaction from killing. However submenu gave me more to think, and parry made timing a necessity. It's no longer fun. The more my brain works when playing, the less satisfying. That's not supposed to happen in a brainless slaying game.
It's strange cuz they seemed to have realized that the complicated system is wrong, and corrected it in Samurai 5, but now with origin they went double down on the wrong path. Bottomline, only older games are the true warriors game for me, that means samurai 1-3 and 5, Dynasty up to 8 (7 in Asia), and orichi up to 3 (2 in Asia). Peace out

This game is so bad I can't believe it. The story, there is no story. Yes, there are a lot of cutscenes, and yes, there seems to be some plot for every mission. But no, there are no story. Not a single thing in this game that hasn't been in 1000 other JRPGs already. And for those who say it has good combat? Hello? Have you actually pl;ayed a game with good combat? Nier Automata, that's good combat. Wolong and Sekiro, those're good combats. Even Scarlet Nexus and Granblue Fantasy Relink have better combats than FF16. This FF16's combat? It's ****. Especially when you think about Granblue Fantasy, done by a studio that haven't done much console games, and they nailed everything better than Square Enix. Seriously, with FF16, SE performed worse than average 2nd class studios. The graphics are good, quite good in fact. But apart from that, not a single thing is good about the "game".

It's such a controversial game to comment on. The sci-fi, mythical setting and the story, great. The romance, deeply touching. The music, great. The anime cutscenes, beyond this world. But the game itself? Mediocrely good at best. It wasn't like it's not fun at all. It IS fun to a degree. But unlike those games which gameplay is so great you can't put the controller down, this game I kinda have to push myself to play, otherwise my hands are just unwilling to pick the controllers up. The story, and everything I mentioned aboved, is what kept me going. Square used some cheap mechanism to make this game, like high encounter rate in maze to drag the gaming time, which is just low, and it can be a problem in many parts of the game. Also, They designed the difficulty based on changing rules. Many boss fights are difficult becuase the rules are different with those bosses. Which is not uncommon, but not a high-end approach you know? Take another masterpiece for ep, Suikoden 2, the battle system is all out there, and you have fun by trying out different strategies and combinations of magic and unite attacks, plus so many characters available, and you bascially can try everything out at your free will once you learned how the system works. With Xenogears, especially those boss fights that are infamously difficult, there's basically only or two strategy will work, unless you grind the level so much it breaks all the limits of the system, which is quite low as well. More importantly, it makes you never feel ready and excited to go into the next battle, cuz you know something new will come up and screw whatever you plan to do. Also because of this, in several spots the battle with normal encounters are more difficult than the boss fight. Some little monsters you kill them by using healing magic on them, and if you don't know this, keep fighting for 5 mins with no progress at all. The final boss fight, on the other hand, is easy like a joke. The game has never been fair throughout. So many boss fights make you nervous, and you never feel you know what to do next. Many little monsters out there too. However when it gets to the final boss, just enjoy the battle, but it won't give you enough to savor. It will be over just when you start to enjoy. I'm really speechless. Could've been good, but they once again screwed it up. There were two options for final boss, and it turns out the seemingly more approachable option is a lot harder than the seemingly challenging option. The difficulty curve and balance is just broken throughout the game. I basically didn't grind level, but did grind for deathblows. And I get it, someone else may had a totally different experience, but mine is what mattered to me. The basic rules are also so confusing. Deathblows are necessary for you to play this game, but they couldn't underscore its importance more. Element weakness? You think there's a chain that one beats the other? Ho ho ho, no. There's two pairs. Fire beats water, and water beats fire. Plus, there's one boss who's immune from this rule. Geez. Plus, the physical attacks with element magic at the end, you think they count as element attacks? The answer is not NO. It's NOT ALWAYS. Sometimes the element part do count as element attack, but again, not for every eneymy. So many places in this game one has to look up the guides online, otherwise they probably can't even finish the game, not to mention have all the fun with it. The battle goes in a modified turn-based system, which is to my taste. I hate those "turn-based" system with real time element, like most Square Enix games. If you act based on speed bar, then it's not turn-based. This one, speed bar decides order, but when one character's menu is ready, the whole time stops. Which I can accept though I still prefer real turn-based. With many flaws in gameplay as it is, this is still one masterpiece that is worth trying for every JRPG lover. The way people back then tells the story and weaves the world set is just something else, something that don't exist anymore. With barebone 3d graphics, they had to focus on making the game great, and they absolutely did in this game. These days, they just make graphic look good, and everythingelse mediocre at best, and Xenogears is rigth opposite. Everything beside gameplay is absolutely great. Music is no quite, but close to Suikoden 2 and two Nier games' level. Anime cutscene, my goodness, the exquisite drawing of 80s and 90s is just breathtaking. Not even modern Japanese studios can make something that great anymore. Story is great even after 20 years. The love between the two main characters, god, it makes you believe in love. I can't remember how many times I cursed the cheap and tedious maze, but once I'm on the other side of it, and saw Elly's face once again, it just all become worth it. These aspects of this game really make you question what have we improved in the past 20 years at all. Bottomeline, try it, it won't let you down.

Chrono Trigger7

It's a good, but hardly great game. 1. the ATB system is not for everyone. It's doesn't give you the enjoyment of actual real time games, and it takes away the ease and tactical thinking of real turn-based games. 2. hours into the game, you will see more and more design to drag the play time. The maze in this game all have cheap designs to send you back to somewhere before in the maze, just so you will play all the way through again to get back. It's natural people want to fully explore the maze, and they'd fall for that. Not a good way to prolong the play timeat all. Quite cheap. 3. They played safe with the story. The time travellingworld set is interesting enough, but the actual story is plain. I can only recall one or two plots that's actually touching, everything else is just kinda routine. And there's plot that sets you back, like making you work for hours toward a goal, and turns out it'sthe wrong way, and by doing it you actually made the problem worse. I don't get why some people praise this game as godly. I've played other games that are truly godly, and Chrono Trigger, by comparison, is good at best

I never played topspin 4, so it didn't matter how 2k25 compare to it.
I'm notvery deep into the game yet, but just for the fact they didn't include djok, I'd give 10 already. The past decade was rule by the boring and endless rallies, and I certainly don't want that in the game. And the fact, the first voice you hear in the game is John McEnroe, and there's a whole academy mode filled with McEnroe's instruction, that was crazy. I lost the first battle, and the voice of Mc comes up, it take great effort and strength to become a champion, and the pressure and take it all away, things like that. They were full of wisdom, and feels so special when it is John McEnroe who says these to you. It pratically made me want to enrol in Nadal's tennis school and actually become a professional player. Love the game!

Aesthetics are good, battle system is alright, these are the only two things good about this game. The combat is kinda unique, it's definitely not the best out there. The hitting feel isn't the most satisfying, but the execution is super. On the other hand, the story is mediocre at best, literally. For story, I'll give it a 3/10. It has the potential, but **** up. The base scenariobetween chapters are also lame. Watching some npc stories, and fight some too, but these characters, they are so cliche and formularic. Like the introvert girl in it, you can count on her to be the most shy and weird girl on earth. The arrogant, rude guy , you guessed it, is an **** beyond reason. That's the problem with Japanese Chu-ni culture, everything's so stereotypical and un-relatable. And the main story, omg, I don't even want to dignify it with a comment. Avoid at all cost. If it were made as one story, it would actually be fine, beyond average I'd say, but they forced it into two lines, so you'd play the game twice. Dual main character works only when both are good and exciting. but in this case, both are lacking and making no sense because of this seperation, and how can the first mediocre half make you want to play a second mediocre half? Geez Finished the game yesterday, don't remmeber a thing about music already. So, mediocre again. This is a really difficult game to define. Is it ****? Yes, but has its shining points. Combat system and good looking graphics, and you won't realize the story's **** until middle of the game, so you can enjoy some parts of it. But is it a good game? Not really. It could've been, and it's such a pity. You will enjoy this game somewhat, then realize it's ****, then struggle whether to do the second round, and caught exactly between yes and no. Bandai Namco, this would be much better if you didn't do a half way job, but you did

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain8
Sep 17, 2023
I can see a lot of old fans of the franchise criticize Iron rain. They certainly have their point, but that just doesn't bother me. Iron rain is my first EDF, and I LOVE it. The graphics look good, gamepkay is super fun and satisfactory, and the story is amazing. It really gives you the sense that the world is desperate, and you're fighting for a cause. The control feels just right for me. In fact, after Iron rain I tried EDF 5 as well, it's just awkward, the button mapping is different, and running in EDF 5 feels so heavy and slow. The graphic looks okay-ish actually with EDF 5, but to me Iron rain is just a better game in pretty every way.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars0
Aug 12, 2023
Many learned the name Yoko Taro from Nier Automata, and indeed Nier Dualogy is a great franchise. However, it puzzles me what made Taro decide that it's a good idea to make a traditional Japanese turn-based RPG in modern times, cuz it's not, and hiding it under the appearance of a card game changes nothing. The game was easy basically all the way till the final boss fight, at which point it becomes ridiculously hard and annoying. Apparently toward the end, he wanted us to explore the maze and get those top weapons and armors, but I'm not gonna do it when you run into a battle every 3 to 5 steps in that maze. Just not gonna happen, it's no longer 1980s. Such a bad difficulty curse is just bad game design, and despite the generally faverable or okayish review, the fact this game is so niche says everything. So, I got stuck at final boss, and I don't plan to do ANYTHING about it, because going back to get good weapons means I will face another 100 battles before I get back to the boss. On the other hand, going back to town to get more potion and other stuff, which you barely ever needed at all until final boss, means I need to come all the way back to the boss again. Not gonna do it. Good chance you won't buy much along your play cuz you never needed them, except now you really need it, a lot, but the cost to go back and get them is really not worth it. The game is just so mediocre in everyway, even the music is not good as Nier dualogy, despite same man made them, and the story isn't that good at all. Nothing motivates you to go through the pain in the ass to reveal the end. I still think Nier as one of my favorites of all time, but the name Yoko Taro is no longer the golden seal of quality. So disappointed

Resident Evil 43
Apr 13, 2023
My last RE game was RE2 on pc in early 2000s. I thought the remake of 4 will be a good time to pick it up, but after playing it for an hour or 2, I realized I didn't really miss much. This game impresses me as extremely awkward. Is it a third person shooting game? It has guns, but the pistol is weaker than a sling shot, and even shotgun couldn't kill anything efficiently, plus there never will be enough ammo for you. Is it a knife fighting game? Not really, there's isn't much short range attack moves for you to work with. Is it a stealth game? Again, not really. There're some enemies you can kill from behind, but that only makes up like 10% of them tops. So bottomline, I don't know what the **** is this. As a shooting game, it's not snappy and satisfying enough. It's a game you kinda shoot, kinda kick, kinda infiltrate, kinda fight boss, but at the end of day, you just got chased by a bunch of zombies and hope you can find a way to get to the next section. Strongly disappointed.

Fire Emblem Engage6
Feb 26, 2023
The content of Engage is about paying respect to the whole series, which is wierd in first place, because they already did that in fire emblem warriors. Paying respect twice in one generation? What's so respectable about this franchise? Fine, I am okay with it. However, while the characters are taken from decades back, the painting style is completely modern, it looks like a cheap mobile game! I'd played the Genealogy on SNES, in which Sigurd was illstrated with exquisite, handsome 80s darwing style, and now what Engage turn him into? A completely un-identifiable pedestrian. Same thing with Lindis from the Blazing Blade, and many other classic characters. Seriously, get your mind straight. Don't let Nostalgia become a cheap excuse for saving money. I'm too loyal to Fire Emblem to give it something lower than 6, but I gotta be honest, the more loyal you are, the more disappointed you will be with this new instalment.

Triangle Strategy7

I like the gameplay and the story. It's an authentic s-rpg, but the choice making thing... It keeps asking you make choices, and each will change the next chapter or so, but never gives you enough information to make any of them, so every single choice is like a gamble. It doesn't really matter, because whatever you choose, you will fight somebody in next chapter, but that just make the whole thing more stupid. The only reason this system exist is for the conviction system, which is another pain in the ass. By principle, sure, the difference among the 3 values makes all the difference, but trying to fit them into every dialogue and choice making is stupid

Xuan-Yuan Sword 710
Oct 9, 2021
The seventh Xuan Yuan Sowrd. Touching story, beautiful music, and great game. A Eastern Han Dynasty Saga. (1st Century AD) It doesn't look as good as modern 3A games, but unreal 4 engine makes it look better than many Japanese RPGs on PS4. This is not the best ARPG, as Taiwanese are still on their way of modernizing, but the story is beautiful, the music makes you drop tears, and the gameplay is good, if not great. It is the story of a brother, a sister, and a childhood friend. Simple, pure, and beautiful. Interestingly, many Chinese don't like this story, because being educated in communist way, individual is nothing if he/she doesn't serve the ruler. They don't understand the right of one person is the right of whole nation. In the setting of this game, the early stage of Chinese civilization, not only people believe in personal freedom and importance of individuality, Taoism philosophers literally said "Harming one person to benefit the whole nation, is totally unacceptable". Xuan Yuan Sword 7 is a true heritage of Chinese Culture and its belief in love, freedom, and personal value, and it is great for anyone who's interested in something worthy but barely covered in other games.
