Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons

Apparently I’m liking Double Dragon Gaiden a little better than some of the critics. It has great visuals and audio, plus really well developed gameplay, even though its difficulty ramp tamps down some of the fun it could have. If you’re interested in a different take on the Double Dragon formula, with rogue-like elements, you should definitely give it a try. However, if you’re looking for a more traditional Double Dragon experience, you might still like it, but you may want to wait for it to go on sale.

For anyone who subscribes to Xbox Gamepass, this game is a no brainer. Install it and play it now. It’s lots of fun. For anyone paying full price, if you like these types of asymmetrical horror survival games, you should probably go for it. The game is very well made and different enough from prior games in its genre that it feels fresh. But even if Dead by Daylight never clicked for you, and this looks interesting, you should give it a shot; it is just different enough that it might be your new favorite.

Blasphemous 2

If you like metroidvanias, Blasphemous 2 will be right up your alley. It looks and sounds amazing, and the tight combat generally means that when you die it was simply your fault. Checkpoints and shortcuts seem fairly generous and don’t feel overly frustrating. While it doesn’t seem to be as difficult as the first game, Blasphemous 2 may be a more accessible way for more gamers to enjoy the perils of the Penitent One. Although I did prefer the cut scene art style of the original better. This one is fully animated, and while it's well done, I enjoyed the style of the original. Definitely check it out.

The Making of Karateka

Wow. The extent to which Digital Eclipse provides background and historical artifacts on Karateka is impressive, and even borders on going a bit too deep in sections, but you aren’t forced to look at anything you don’t want to. The various ports of Karateka are incredible to play, and it’s great to see the small changes and enhancements between them. The remakes are also very impressive. The remake of Karateka is probably the best version of the game to date. But it’s the remake of Deathbounce that is truly incredible. Digital Eclipse took Jordan’s Deathbounce prototypes, plus the notes he developed over time, and made it into an actual complete fun game to play. The visuals are retro-styled enough and the twin stick shooter controls make it feel like a perfect version of the game. Truly impressive. For any fans of Karateka, or any retro enthusiasts, you have to check this out.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros Wonder is one of the best Mario games I’ve played in years, and it looks so good it’s easy to forget just how old and underpowered the Switch hardware is at this point. With tight, polished and innovative gameplay, I would recommend that everyone give it a try, whether you typically like Mario games or not.

Haunted House

At $20 it’s an ok enough refresh of a classic game, and it might be interesting for nostalgic older gamers, but you could definitely wait for a sale. It seems Atari really struggles to find a compelling way to remake Haunted House and at some point we need a full-on M-rated scary reboot that’s more P.T. and less Mickey Mouse club.

Berzerk: Recharged

Berserk Recharged adds several gameplay elements to the original, yet somehow loses the original’s magic in the process. The end result is an ok looking game with fun but shallow gameplay, and a decent but not amazing soundtrack. I may pick it up and play it for a few minutes from time to time, but honestly I’d rather just play the original.

This is the first game I’ve reviewed I recommend no one buy. At $39.99 it is far too expensive for what it is, even if it didn’t have major bugs, and since there is a good chance you will encounter a game breaking bug, sadly I can’t recommend it at any price. This one is bad.

Overall this game is priced right and is interesting to play. The graphics look good but probably not as good as the 16-bit fighters you remember (I fired up Eternal Champions just to confirm). More of a missed opportunity than anything. But the fighting is still fun, the characters are distinct and interesting and the attacks are cool. If you liked 16-bit fighters like Street Fighter II, Fatal Fury and Eternal Champions you should definitely give this one a try.

Sonic Dream Team is a surprisingly full featured 3D Sonic game on par with other modern Sonic games. What’s really surprising is that it was made for mobile but it feels like it could have been released on a home console. Would be great to see more games like this.

Mystic Warriors is like a ninja themed version of Sunset Riders, and also by Konami. Great 90s arcade graphics and a killer soundtrack combine to make a very enjoyable game.

Those Who Remain has a creepy interesting vibe and story that kept me playing all the way to the end. The connections between characters are obvious but also quite realistic and the forgiveness mechanic is an interesting twist. Overall I enjoyed my time with it.

Good looking graphics with detailed well designed environments and Bioshock vibes but with Gone Home-like walking simulator gameplay. Interesting story using a Nikolas Tesla vs Edison feud as a backdrop. Short and sweet. Loved it. Need more like this.
