The Messenger9

It's one of those games that starts out fine and just never stops getting cooler. It's unexpectedly funny and witty, lots of attention to detail, main gameplay that's just constantly fun and satisfying. Definitely stands out among the deluge of other retro indie games that this might look similar to at first glance. Highly recommended.

Neat little gameplay gimmick, but just didn't really hold my interest even over the short playtime. Plot is basically a shoddy ripoff of Pony Island that doesn't fit the game. Tries to go all spooky meta-narrative for no real reason than it's popular in the indie scene these days. There's nothing really wrong with that but we're clearly here for the gameplay, not what passes for a story. At one point early on the player character in the game is told over text by a spooky mysterious entity to close the game and never play it again. This is where you're supposed to launch the game again in defiance so you can play more, but I just kept my promise and closed the game, never reopened to this day. The mysterious text box made me type out my promise to never play again, and I'm a man of my word.

I didn't even think it was possible for a Souls game to be any better than Bloodborne, but here I am. From the beginning it only ever gets better, with some of the series' most climactic and amazing bosses.

Addicting rogue-lite bullet hell with everything you could possibly want out of it. Know your dodge rolls and follow bullet patters and you'll get through just fine. Like Binding of Isaac but without any of the floatiness or general unpleasantness to play.

It's a fun game for sure, the main issue is just that there isn't enough of the fun game to justify the $60 price, especially with all the content cut for DLC. Wait for a good discount, I'd say the game is about worth it at around $35 max.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number4
Nov 22, 2015
Hotline Miami was a game that was fun largely thanks to how I almost never needed to rely on guns. Hotline Miami 2 forces the player to use guns in the vast majority of levels. Difficulty is artificial, level designs are a big step back, it just took everything fun about the original and snapped it over its leg with a sickening crack. I really, really wanted to like it, the soundtrack is great and the story is as idiotic and crazy as ever (this is a good thing), but the levels are almost all designed to be slow methodical crawls as you avoid bullets shot from dozens of enemies that you can't see because they're off-screen and have ridiculous line-of-sight length. You can never just blitz through a level with a melee weapon and a death wish and come out victorious like you could in the first one, and that just kills it. Disappointment of 2015, and I really hate that I'm typing that down.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow10

Far, far superior to Symphony of the Night. This game nails down every aspect of good design, from the great design of the castle to the unparalleled soul collection system that keeps the game perpetually fresh and damn fun.

Thief 2 is no longer the world's best stealth game. It held the title for so many years, but it simply cannot possibly compare to this masterpiece of design.

Beautifully designed in every aspect and my favorite of Supergiant's two games so far. I have to say that Bastion is probably superior in all those objective measures of design, but all of Transistor's unique quirks and themes especially appealed to me, much more so than Bastion did. I love cyberpunk and I really liked all the programming references, so Transistor certainly delivered for me. I think the games industry would be a lot livelier place if games were designed more like that, appealing much more to niche areas and being more unique rather than going for the broadest appeal.

It's like Half-Life 2 with a totally different plot and more fun weapon variety. A game that will probably be overlooked by most but is easily worth any FPS fan's time.

Without a shadow of doubt a masterpiece. Incredible in everything it does. Masterful writing, unparalleled voice acting, every single character is incredibly memorable, the entire massive complex of Aperture is built and revealed perfectly, and the all-important portal based puzzle gameplay is flawless. This is Valve's magnum opus - a perfect game in every way.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night6
May 30, 2015
It's a good game, just incredibly overrated. Aria/Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia are far better games and honestly make Symphony of the Night feel quite boring. At the end of the day there's nothing that SotN does that you won't find much better in the newer entries. That being said though, Richter mode in SotN is still loads of fun.

Moon Chronicles: Episode 13
May 30, 2015
It's weird seeing so many people give good reviews, this would be rated sub-par as an FPS even in the Doom days because it's so clunky, slow, controls so poorly, and has such little variety. Aiming your gun, even with the circle pad pro or the N3DS c-stick, is like pulling teeth and shooting the gun is shaky and has no feeling of impact at all. Almost any other game on the 3DS out there is more worth your money.

Child of Light5

It's charming in almost every way, but the dreary turn based combat drags it down, unfortunately. The entire combat system is incredibly boring and feels so crowbarred in, as does the accompanying upgrade tree. This could perhaps have been a 9/10 if it had stuck to being a puzzle platformer with much more simple combat, like Bastion's for example. Unfortunately it's just too grind heavy with boring elements to be worth getting to the best parts.

I am honestly baffled that a rock-simple and ancient game like Space Invaders could be given such a lively and absurdly addictive remake like this. For a few bucks on a mobile platform, this is an easy sell.

At some point while I was stylishly slicing my way through hundreds of enemies as my favorite Zelda characters in beautiful scenery to a fantastic soundtrack, I realized that I was having an amazing time.
