I've always loved the Mana series, and this game is a great new addition. It's really fun and relaxing to play. The characters are beautiful, the combat is enjoyable, and the semi-open world is a lot of fun to explore. The animations and visual effects are well done. The class system adds some nice depth to the gameplay. I hope to see more Mana games in the future!

I was really impressed by the story and characters, both of which are well-crafted and compelling. The combat is enjoyable and enhances the experience. On the downside, the pacing felt off at times, with too much story before returning to the action—it could have been better balanced. Additionally, the final chapter felt unnecessarily long and would have benefited from being more concise. Overall, it's a great JRPG.

Final Fantasy XVI

I’ve played most of the mainline Final Fantasy games, and this one is probably the worst. It starts and ends somewhat well, but the large middle portion is mediocre. While I appreciated the premise of a more mature Final Fantasy, it wasn’t well executed. Calling this game an RPG is laughable compared to previous entries. You can’t customize your party, only the main character, which is a departure from the series’ iconic features. The magic system is absent; instead, you learn abilities through a simplistic skill tree. The crafting system is overly simple, and the inventory system is uninspired—you just carry potions that you buy or that refill upon death. Combat lacks challenge, as you mostly spam the attack button while enemies stand still, with few exceptions for some bosses and mini-bosses. The only redeeming aspect of the battle system is the Eikon battles. A 40-hour action game is too long, and there are too many cutscenes for a story that falls apart midway. The sidequests are uninteresting. The soundtrack is excellent and the best part of the game. If Final Fantasy XVI represents the new direction of the series, I have lost hope for its future.

Before getting into Eternights, understanding its background helps set expectations. The creator drew inspiration from Persona 5 and began as a solo developer. Keep in mind, it's an indie game, so it won't reach the scale of titles from giants like Atlus or Square Enix. That being said, Eternights still stands out. The story is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, mixing in sadness, humor, and intrigue. The final act, in particular, shines. The characters are a real treat, with unique personalities that really immerse you in their world. It's got a touch of that social link system you'd find in Persona, which adds depth, making you plan your in-game activities to build those friendships and bonds. The combat might get a bit repetitive, but since the game's on the shorter side, it may not become tiresome for you. Also, there's a nice replay factor. You can try different romance routes with your companions. I'm really looking forward to what the developer does next! And here's the kicker - don't miss what comes after the credits. Get your phone camera ready for a surprise worth capturing.

I played all previous Zelda games and couldn't continue with this one after 12 hours. The game is just not fun for me. Weapons that break all the time? Cheap deaths like in swimming or lightning attacks? One-hit kill by stronger enemies? Starting the game with tons of powers instead of gathering one by one as the story progresses? Framerate issues? Seriously, how come people say this is the best Zelda, and even the best game ever made? Better than A Link to the Past, Ocarina and Majora's? Extremely overrated, in my opinion. If it were any other game without the Zelda name on it, it would not get more than a 7 or 8. Some things in this game are great, like physics, visuals... But that's it. I'm concerned about the future of this franchise.

Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy

I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy and there was no title in the main franchise that disappointed me. Then I decided to play this spin-off because it contains the name "Final Fantasy" and... boom. What a disaster. There are two main reasons which make Dissidia a game that should be skipped. Firstly, repetition. There is a few number of real enemies. The rest of them are "clones" of the characters that you play with. So you keep fighting with and against Lightning, Tifa, Laguna... over and over again. Oh, and a boss that you have defeated, guess what: he becomes an ordinary enemy. This is recycled content, which is pretty bad for any game. Not to mention that walking through the map is tedious, and there is nothing to break the routine. Secondly, loading screens. Loading, enter the map, loading, enter the portal, loading, start a battle, loading, fight the battle, loading, return to map. And each loading may take up to several seconds. The player must be very patient to deal with it. At least graphics and soundtrack are good. The plot has nothing to be highlighted and seems to have been made in a way to purely justify the crossover between the different games. I'm very disappointed with this game but I'll consider it is not a real Final Fantasy.

The Last of Us

Feb 22, 2014
I am confident to say that The Last of Us is the best game that I have played in this generation. Even though my favorite genre is JRPG, I recognize all the developers’ efforts in this memorable masterpiece. First of all, this game is not a shooter. Every year people complain about the same franchises arguing that they do not innovate. Ironically, games like Call of Duty still continue to break sales record over and over. To be honest, I expected that The Last of Us was going to be somewhat Uncharted-like (since it’s from the same studio), but for my surprise it is not. It is all about surviving. You have to make every bullet count instead of shooting frenetically. In my opinion, a game has a good chance of succeeding by not being more from the same saturated shooter industry. Another thing that makes the game brilliant is the stealth system. It completely suits with the survival aspect. Secondly, I believe that games are not only about gameplay but also story and soundtrack. The cast is memorable and the voice acting is amazing. It is easy to have immersion in the game because you get involved with the events between Joel and Ellie. They are charismatic and somehow invite you to be part of their adventure. One thing that I have to highlight is the fact that this game is not about zombies. In fact, the term used to describe these kind of enemies is “infected”. No banal things like “shoot only in the head to kill them” exist. People are just infected. It is possible to kill some of them unarmed and not by blowing up their heads. Some levels of infection require weapons to kill enemies, but it is a feature that adds challenge to the game. The concept of infected may not be original, but from I gather it is easy to distinguish the infected ones from this game. For these reasons, The Last of Us is my game of the generation. In a world where console games seems to decline year after year with the advent of mobile and casual games, I cheer that hardcore, innovative and memorable games continue to come. Naughty Dog was able to prove that even in the end of generation there is still hope for old school gamers.

The last crossover game that I've played before Project X Zone was Cross Edge. I was able to notice that mixing a lot of characters from different worlds is not an easy task, so I was kinda worried when I decided to play this game. Fortunately, I've enjoyed the experience, specially because I'm a huge fan of the SRPG genre. The real challenge about making a game with such different worlds, characters and rules is to find a balance that makes you believe the crossover is acceptable. I didn't play all the games that the characters belong to (some of them weren't localized). But I think the story worked okay even knowing that, for instance, Resident Evil and Shining Force are completely different. The real problem is that there's too many characters and it's impossible to focus individually on them. The script had to be made in a way that each character speaks a little to give a chance to the others speak too. We choose our favorite characters but they don't get focus. The battle system is the real thing to be highlighted. I personally prefer 2D over 3D, and since most games are made in 3D nowadays I can say that I really had a great time watching all the excellent and well made hand draw animations. The moves, specially the finishing moves, are awesome. Some battles have around 50 enemies on the field, which is a considerable number since it's turn-based. Unfortunately, at some point in the game everything starts to be repetitive because there's no more attacks and skills to be unlocked. Another thing that I didn't like and it's the same mistake of Endless Frontier is fighting against the same bosses over and over again, which makes the game even more repetitive. It's not cool to defeat a boss many times wondering how he manages to escape every time and watch the heroes do nothing about it. The skills have nothing special due to the fact that they basically do the same things: heal, increase range, general buffs... It would be cool if the characters had unique skills. In short, Project X Zone is a great Japanese SRPG to be played if you enjoy the genre and at least some of the characters. Also, be aware that the game is very extensive, specially if you don't skip the animations. Some chapters could have been easily cut out to shorten the story. Be aware also that the last boss can be difficult if you don't have strategy or sufficient level. I recommend that you defeat as many enemies as possible before doing the requirements of each chapter in order to be strong in the last chapter.

Killer is Dead has a memorable art and cool combat mechanics that will make SUDA 51 fans enjoy the game. Depending on how the game is rendered, we can have a different point of view. This game uses a shader that looks like a blend between realism and cel shading, which is pretty different from what we see on other games and it accentuates special effects in a mixing of lights, blood spill and contrasts. It's just beautiful. The story is interesting, but has nothing special to be highlighted. In fact, it doesn't follow a linear timeline and makes you interpret some things in a subjective way like viewing dreams and the past memories of the protagonist. All the characters have traits that belong to the japanese culture, which may not be attractive to the western culture. Combat is very fun made with simple combos. The evade and guard features make the experience even better as they challenge your reflexes. Skills can be unlocked and upgraded. The main story can be finished in a short time, but there's a lot of content to be explored too, like side missions and quick challenges. If you're looking for a cool action game or if you simply trust on SUDA's games, Killer is Dead is a good choice.

This is the second game that I've played in the franchise. I got a bad ending in Atelier Totori Plus and I understood that I had to be careful with the time system. With that in mind, I was able to avoid the bad ending in Atelier Meruru Plus without a guide. I had a great time playing the game but something was still missing when I finished it. Atelier Meruru is an improvement of the previous title. Many things were changed in a good way, like no deadlines to report quests, no pies to feed the homunculus and bonuses acquired by constructing buildings to the kingdom. These things help you to be less worried about leveling up, gathering and synthesizing. Graphics are beautiful. Battles have fun mechanics, dynamic actions and cool special effects. They are the prove that the turn-based system can still be relevant. If you played Atelier Totori you'll be happy to see the return of some characters. The synth system continues beeing good and basically the same. Soundtrack is great but I prefer from Atelier Totori, which I find more catchy. Story is simple, nothing innovative. But I think that's the charm of the franchise. They focus on the characters and the events between them, so you get more involved in their relationship. The cast is memorable. There's some things that I personally don't like about the game. First, events that occur unexpectedly. Sometimes I needed to be focused synthesizing a sequence of items and after each one I had to stop and watch a cutscene. This kind of event breaks the immersion and it only happens because of another thing that I don't like about the franchise: the time system. Maybe it is necessary so the game can be unique, but it should at least be longer. The fact of beeing so short to do a lot of stuff leads to the third thing that I dislike: unfair endings. I was able to get a population of 30.000 people in time to avoid the bad ending, but even with that I got an ending that was not satisfactory. Fair endings should be reached with a normal play and that's not what happens in the game. You see, after avoiding the bad ending you can do a lot of efforts that lead to nothing. So what's the point? In the end, you have two choices: avoid the bad ending or play in a hardcore way with a guide to get the true ending. Cause you won't be satisfied with the not-bad-in-theory ending. I'd still recommend the game for the experience and fun, but if you're someone who really gets involved in gaming then you should use a guide to make sure you'll get the best ending.

Resident Evil 6 tries to mix many genres into one but fails to have an unique and memorable experience. If you're fan of the first games you'll probably don't like the four available campaigns that much. The survival horror is more present in Leon's campaign and it's still not good as the franchise should offer. Chris' campaign fails to be a shooter because of the bad controls (like the cover system), Jake's campaign seems to be a mix of a strategy/shooter and Ada's campaign is more like a stealth/shooter. I think there are two things considered critical in this game. First, the quick time events. There is no need to have them. Second, constant deaths. Even being a hardcore gamer you'll die a lot because of the QTE and poor game design. There is a difference between dying a lot because the game is hard and because the mechanics are not well executed. Despite of the mentioned flaws, RE 6 is still a game that deserves to be played. Graphics are very good, the plot is interesting with great connections between the four campaigns and there's still room to have fun, be on the single-player or multiplayer. I'd like to leave a message for Capcom: please, reboot the franchise to be a survival horror only. There's no need to turn it into a shooter. You have a fanbase that plays RE because of the experience that you offered from RE 1 to RE 4. Turning the franchise into a shooter will not bring new players that can compensate the losses of the loyal fans. Players want to be excited while playing, to be scared and feel tension to survive. If RE becomes a shooter it will be just another one in the saturated game industry.

Dragon's Crown can be easily classified as the best beat 'em up of the current generation with a plus: it's a RPG with a story told in a classic way adapted to a game language. The art of Vanillaware is amazing. The advantage of 2D is that it doesn't get old as the 3D does. So if you play this game years from now it will still look brilliant. I've read many comments and reviews saying that the art in this game is offensive and sexualized. Well, it highlights women's attribute. But it's the artist's style. Come on, guys. It's like saying that all the paintings on the museums containing nudity are offensive. They are simply art. I don't understand why the western culture is so paranoid about this. There's a good amount of content to be unlocked and characters to play with. I've read some articles saying that the beat 'em up genre is doomed, but this game proves that it isn't. You can have a really good time playing solo or with your friends. We must thank Atlus for helping this game to be launched. They're simply one of the best companies to release japanese games on the west. Oh, and if you're fan of Monty Python you must see the tribute that Dragon's Crown offers in a specific stage!

The story is very interesting and the characters are charismatic. Battles are very fun but they suffer from two problems. First, you have to keep the enemy in the air most of the time, so it's not a natural battle. It's like playing with a Second, the game seems to have suffered from low budget because you fight with the same bosses over and over. Looks like the developers were looking to cut costs and have recycled many battles. Apart of these two things, the battles are really amazing with very well made hand draw animations and mechanics. Graphics remind of the 16 bits era, so if you play since that time you may feel nostalgic. There's also a lot of sexual references and focus on the females' breasts. If you're fan of JRPGs there's no doubt that you should play this game. If you can still find it on stores...

Ever since this game was announced I followed it and day after day my desire to play it became stronger. When it launched I was kinda shocked because of the bad reception. Most gamers and "specialized critic" (which I've decided to ignore for JRPGs) gave scores between 0 and 4. I had all the reasons to avoid this game but I bought it anyway. For my surprise I must say that I've really enjoyed this game and I don't know what is wrong with all the haters. Yes, the game has a lot of problems. Character animations were developed in a way that they look unnatural. For instance, sometimes they have to finish a pose in the same position as the next one starts. That may look more realistic but at the same time it makes the character staying in a position that he didn't need to be. And in some moments they used poses that weren't fitting in the situation, like the main character smiling when talking serious to an enemy. Some basic problems are still present, like the impossibility to pause the cutscenes. You can skip them after watching for the first time, but you can't pause. If you start watching them, be prepared to watch until the end without interruption. English voices are not synchronized with the animations, so you might get frustated. That may be one of two problems: the translation couldn't fit the timing or NIS America didn't do a good job. You play the game with two characters that keep switching each time you level up or use an item. There's a small dragon helping you too, but you can't control him. The skill system and its evolution is cool, but has nothing special at all. The skills to control the flow of time are very interesting but they make the game easier. The battles occur with random encounters. They are fun but kinda repetitive because enemies usually do the same actions in the same order. And they're not fast because sometimes you fight against many enemies in sequence and the transitions between them take an unnecessary time. Also, I didn't find a real challenge playing in normal mode and doing all the sidequests. Most battles are finished using magic because they do massive damage. I missed the balance of physical and magical skills. There’s also a special type of battle that occurs with giant bosses, but it's less fun than the standard battle. There are loading screens when simpling choosing a place to go on the map but they don't last long. And the soundtrack is something that people should not complaint about: it's really awesome. About the story, I can say it’s very interesting, entertaining and exciting. And when you almost reach the end, you’ll see an unexpected event regarding the main characters. That’s when I say that you must plug yourself into the game and forget about the outside world. You’ll feel like you’re part of it making tough decisions. I'd give a much lower score if I were analysing as a technical reviewer. But I'm a gamer and I decided to give a score based on my entire experience with everything the game offered me. I felt the immersion in an anime world, I got involved with the story and the flaws weren't enough to pull me off. I think that's something most people need to do nowadays: turn on the "let it go" and relax playing. You know what's funny? There's a lot of games considered masterpieces out there and they're full and full of problems. We accepted them as they are, so what has changed? Why people are so critic these days putting the mistakes above everything and being blind against the qualities? Do you really like anime or cartoons? Do you love niche JRPGs? Are you tired of the same games and formulas that are released year after year? Do you want a new experience and immersion to break your gaming routine? Do you accept that this game has flaws that might not be taken too serious due to other things it can offer? Do you want to stimulate NIS America and Imageepoch to continue bringing new games and experiences with the genre? If so, Time and Eternity is the game for you.

Bad ending. That's what I got when I played for the first and maybe the last time. I was really enjoying the game but it suddenly ended with many gaps and no way of getting a second chance with the same game progress. I always wanted to play a game of the Atelier series but I never priorized it due to other games I still had to play on PS3. Then Atelier Tototi Plus appeared on Vita and I thought it was my chance. I loved it since the beggining. Beautiful graphics, memorable characters, simple but admirable story, a turn-based battle that isn't boring, a catchy soundtrack and a great variety of synthesizable items. Seriously, there was nothing to complaint about... until I find out what was behind the time system. You know, one of the most common things about RPG is playing at your pace. You take your time to do the quests you want, to fight until you're strong enough to move forward and other things. But with Atelier Totori there's a point in the game where you have to stop everything you want to do just to gather and synthesize some specific items. If you don't do that, it's game over. You will get a bad ending and also a new chance to start the game all over again keeping your money and equipped items only. If you don't mind playing the game more than one time or don't care about using a guide, you should play this game. Maybe you can get a good ending all by youself, now that you know the importance of the time system. You'll also have to enjoy the niche JRPG genre.

This is an underestimated game due to what you can see on images and reviews but behind Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory there's a deep system that many games classified as RPG nowadays doesn't have. If you played mk2 you should know that this game is very similar to it but with many improvements. So if you enjoyed the previous title, this game is a must play. If you're new to the series you will be able to understand the universe and the story but be aware that you must at least enjoy niche JRPGs and/or anime style. This is not an AAA title and has many aspects that you may classify as boring and poor. Graphics in cutscenes and events have been improved because now they use 2D animation instead of the cel shading, which works better with the anime style. On the other hand, 3D graphics have not become much better than mk2. Speaking of cutscenes, that's when I say that you must enjoy japanese humour. They are long, with many dialogs that sometimes doesn't add content to the main story. Not that it isn't good. Characters are charismatic, full of personality and the jokes are funny with metalanguage, something you usually don't see on games (Metal Gear Solid has some of it). The battle system is turn-based with free movement over the environment. It is fun and there's a good number of skills that you can use. There's also combined skills, something that I always enjoyed since Chrono Trigger. You can also transform the characters into stronger forms. One bad thing is that bosses usually do the same thing: one strong simple hit. I missed their use of skills to make the battle more dynamic. Frame rate drops during the animation of the skills but it's not a big deal. There's a lot of sidequests that you can make and items to find and forge. Secret monsters and areas can be activated by the Scout system and there's also an affection system to unlock combined skills. Like I said before, there's many content to find in the game if you have time to spend. There's a disadvantage for those who play only the main story without looking for extra content. The normal ending is disappointing and leaves many gaps in the story. It happens suddenly, making you ask "Wait, did I finish the game? That's it?". In order to have a better experience you need to spend more hours to watch the other endings, so I recommend looking for a guide to know exactly what you gotta do. Unfortunately, the game suffers from recycled content. Different dungeons have the same design and they change only the enemies. The game is cheaper than the standard price, and that may justify the use of the same objects. And even having some ecchi moments in the game, I don't think they're the focus. If you're looking for a great strategy JRPG and enjoy the anime style you should take a look at this game.

Soul Sacrifice has a different way of playing that makes you feel involved with the plot. Most of the story is told by reading a book with audio. We are used to play games watching cutscenes, but with this game things work differently and I think it raises the immersion. But as a consequence it makes the game a little repetitive. You read some part of the book then you go to a battle. And there's not much a variety of monsters, the only thing that really changes about them is the element type. Despite of the repetition, I really recommend that you play this game. Not only you get involved with the story, but the gameplay is very fun. There is a lot of customizations that you can make with spells and discover the best combinations for certain enemies. In order to beat the game you have to grind and that's when the repetition comes stronger. Fortunately, the developers are releasing free DLCs to expand the experience with new quests. I also have to highlight the amazing soundtrack.

The gameplay is great. I recommend using the Circle Pad Pro to have a better experience. Skills and magic are used with a recharge system instead of MP. Your partners in battle are monsters that you create with recipe, which I found strange at first but later on I enjoyed. It's easier to fight than the previous titles. You have to clear every world twice because you have to play with two different characters using the Drop system. Choosing a specific command it's complicated because you don't have the full command list on the screen, just a single line. You need to press up or down to go to next item on the list. So you can't choose the command that you want fast. You don't need to grind to beat the game, and I recommend that so you can have a good challenge. The story is a little confusing but it's not something critical. And just like the previous titles, the soundtrack is awesome. Unfortunately, they repeated some worlds but not the monsters. When I get a new KH to play I always expect to see new areas and characters. If you're fan of the series don't hesitate: you will enjoy this game.

The characters fight in a slow way, making the gameplay dull. It was suposed to be faster, since they're melee fighters. But I think that's the main problem. Battle animations are also well made and it has a cool system of combos. It has a lot of playable characters from many series. But the main problem for me is grinding. You have to grind a lot to beat the game, and that's something I personally don't like. I prefer grinding to make extra stuff, not main story. Also, the battles are relatively hard. You can die easily in every new dungeon. To progress, you need to grind and forge itens. But it's hard to find the items and there is lack of guides out there. It's also hard to find the monsters you search for. In short: if you don't care about grinding and spending many hours, it's a good JRPG to play.

I think the worst thing about this game is the repetition. It's always the same way: you watch some scenes, go into a dungeon, defeat monsters and a boss. There's nothing different to break the routine. And it goes to the soundtrack too: always the same for events, even for different places. Scenes also don't step away from repetitive graphics and animation, and sometimes they simply don't show who is talking in the screen. Recycled dungeons and poor enemies design. I got the impression that the game was made with low resources and/or in a hurry. And in my case, I suffered from some freezing in the first minutes of every dungeon. But let's talk about the good things: variety of endings, many playable characters, great set of skills (including team skills), cool battle gameplay and many items to customize and synth. This game is far from perfect, but if you're a fan of JRPGs you should give it a try, specially to support NIS America to continue bringing japanese content to the west.

The main problems I see are: many loading screens, short campaign and aim issues with the gun. But in general, Lollipop Chainsaw is fun and funny. I see many critics taking this game too serious and that's not the intention. It's just amazing to kill zombies and try to beat the records. It's an arcade game, which means you can also go to the stage you want and simply have fun. It's easy to beat, but if you want more challenge try at the highest difficult. It's like a musou style and it has a variety of mini-games and quick time events, so it's not repetitive. There's some funny parodies too. The soundtrack is amazing, specially if you like rock. It has a lot of costumes to unlock, and if it were a game from other companies you would have to pay for each extra costume. So, I think this game is complete. Short, but fair. Don't expect to be like a complex AAA title with lot of stuff and things to do. It's just a game to relax from stress and have fun, even for the hardcore gamer. And remember: it has zombies and a cheerleader. What else would you want?

One of the best JRPGs on the PS3. Cutscenes are in the traditional way (text box and sometimes voice acting). It has a variety of endings that depends on your choices. Graphics are simple, but the illustrations are very well made in anime style. Battle system is cool and the characters are charismatic. I read some reviews saying that a negative point about this game is that it's pervert. Well, it is pervert, but what's the problem? There are a lot of games out there with intense violence, dirty language and bad manners. And they don't get lower grades by it, so what's the point? Pervert is a bad thing? Stop with false moralism. Anyway, why did I give a 4? Well, it has a serious problem that is being ignored by the publisher: constant freezing in the battles. You can enjoy the story, but when you get in the battle... that's when you start crying. It's impossible to fight without lags, low frame rate ou whatever you wanna call. The screen keeps freezing all the time and there's nothing you can do about, unless someday they release a patch fixing it. Otherwise... focus on the story and forget the fun of the battles. You can beat the game even with the freezing, but be aware that you will not be fully excited about it.

I play the Final Fantasy series since the V. I really love RPGs and, like many others, VII is my favorite and it will always be. But I think many people people simple don't understand that not only games changes as time passes, but also our preferences and desires. Final Fantasy XIII is far from the previous ones for its linearity and an optional auto battle. A game consists not only in gameplay, but also plot, soundtrack, graphics and fun. Each FF offers you new experiences, and that is why the series get high rates in most websites. Games must innovate in some way. We don't want more from the same, like most shooters. Square makes some mistakes, but they're trying. And gamers should recognize it, because one day Square can make something really awesome. My life changed a lot since FF V. Today I work, I have a girlfriend, social life, personal projects and family to give attention. I don't have time to explore 100% of what the game offers. FF XIII has an advantage on its linearity: if you have short time to play games and if you love RPGs, FF XIII is great for you. I loved it and I'll buy FF XIII-2. If you want to focus on traditional gameplay and more from the same, maybe you should take a look at some shooters out there, like Call of Duty. Maybe a lot of players didn't like FF XIII, but no one can deny that each time you get a new FF you'll see something different. And that is something many companies aren't capable of. Open your mind for new experiences: it will be good for your games and your life.
