Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker0
Dec 8, 2021
The reality is that the little I've seen of it is pretty good. When they get the server issues sorted out it'll probably be great. But right now I spend hours in the queue, get kicked out, sent to the back, and despite starting two hours before I wanted to play lose entire nights to the queue. The infrastructure can't handle the load right now. Until it can, it's impossible to recommend the game unless you play in the morning.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny6
Jul 3, 2021
Unlike a lot of people, I don't miss most of what was cut. A lot of it was things I didn't really use anyway, or even forgot you could do. That part isn't a big deal, and in some ways cutting systems was a good idea to reduce complexity that wasn't adding value. That said, there just isn't a ton to recommend here. The graphical performance is brutal, as in "on the default setting it slows to an obvious crawl" and it impacts playing. Balanced mode is playable but not terribly nice looking, and performance mode gives something resembling a decent framerate but is unbelievably ugly. The Switch isn't a graphical powerhouse, but other games do far better than this on it. Weaponskills are also missing, and it's really noticeable on the unique characters as they only get their own unique skills now, instead of those plus weapon skills. This didn't impact spellcasters, who get their uniques AND spells, giving them a lot more versatility while everyone else only has a relatively small number of skills. The omission is really noticable and painful. The only thing you can do for generic classes is reincarnate to another class entirely, level to get the skills there, then reincarnate back... which is silly because you'll be using a spear but can use a skill that shows an axe in the animation as it's an axe attack. But the biggest problem is that there just isn't a ton to recommend it. While some of the characters have their moments when interacting with each other, the story itself plays out in a very repetitive way and for the most part isn't terribly interesting. The way each act ends is pretty cliched, especially if you do any side stuff like the item world and can just one shot things before cutscenes happen and you become helpless. It gets lame real fast. What we ended up with is a game that had some good ideas and has its moments, but is utterly crippled by performance issues, a weak overarching story, and ill-concieved change to weapon skills. Shame, really.

Healer's Quest9
Apr 22, 2018
Anybody who has ever played a healer in tabletop or MMO games will recognize themselves in this game on some level. Ever noticed how the healer is never the main character in any other game? Critically important, but often overshadowed by the slayers of dragons. And of course, you are the one who has to deal with it when your teammates mess up and bring down a mess. This game takes all that and dials it up to 11. I It's also surprisingly hard for what is a silly game at heart, with real choices for skills, skill customization, and loadout. It can get pretty frantic, and dying is a thing that happens. Naturally your party will blame you. And get grouchy. Lets just say that I adore this game and would love to see more. I would warn that it's probably a niche concept, as if you don't enjoy the humor style and your poor healer being always hated on or ignored by the world, it may not hold the same appeal.

This game greatly exceeded my expectations. As a port of a PSP game, and having never played the genre before, I wasn't expecting much. Instead, I've been playing for a month and a half to the exclusion of other games. There are some rough edges, particularly with finding a crafting material in the giant, non-filterable list. Overall though, a little gem ****, especially if you got it free with God Eater 2.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below7
Nov 4, 2015
I had a lot of fun playing this game, but it was despite a number of issues with it. The good news is that the combat itself works well. The diverse monster cast from Dragon Quest mixes things up quite a lot. The antagonist is pretty fun, and there's some witty jokes in the writing. Performance was as great as you'd expect on the PS4, and animations are smooth. The bad news is that the overall story is pretty basic and easily predictable. With such a large cast, many characters get very little screen time and unless you know them from their respective Dragon Quest game, you'd never have any particular reason to care who they are. Some are much more combat effective than others, and the ones you don't use fall behind in levels gradually, making it even harder to try them out later. Also, the lack of multiplayer is a clearly glaring omission. There's only a few variants in terns of mission types, and you'll see them quite a lot. Some of the maps are quite small, as well. I can forgive all of that stuff because I was having fun, and I do hope they bring the sequel over. I also hope they take the opportunity to improve some of the shortcomings.

It plays well, it's still fun, and the freestyle solos are a lot of fun to play. But for people who had multiple games with exported tracks in the past, having all those songs be missing is a major letdown. The included list is weak, especially compared to Rock Band 1 and 2. When they get all that old content back into this game, it will be much better for it.

Cities: Skylines9
Mar 16, 2015
This game is the passing of the torch to a new generation. Simcity 4's legacy lives on in Cities: Skylines, and it is in good hands. The King is dead, long live the King. You can see it in the way the complaints about Simcity 2013 were answered directly. No online DRM. Yes to modding. Yes to big cities. It's not perfect, and has some rough edges that aren't surprising for a game with a reduced price coming from such a small team. But that stuff can be fixed with patches and modding. They got the core stuff right, and it's just a joy to build a city and then watch traffic grind to a halt because you put all the industrial zones in a spot where only one road goes to the highway and it's jammed right up.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel5
Nov 4, 2014
Surprisingly unpolished compared to Borderlands 2. There are weird bugs and glitches all over the place. Driving on some of the terrain is really annoying. Making terrain jumps in vehicles is harder than it used to be because vehicle boost works differently and they don't tell you that. It's shorter than Borderlands 2, significantly. The map is smaller, and the area reuse is really noticeable. The side quests are incredibly tedious, especially due to the area reuse. You'll get side quests in areas that you outlevel so much that actually stopping to shoot anything is a waste of time. The gameplay is still good, but this is more like an expansion than a full game, and isn't worth full game prices. Series fans should wait for a sale. People new to the series should get Borderlands 2 instead.

When you're actually allowed to play, the game is pretty fun. Fun game with friends. Get a group together and go wreak havok. Shoot the food and steal the crown to annoy your buddies! Not nearly as much fun in single player, I wouldn't recommend it if you're playing alone. But with a group, it's a good time. Also plays much better with a controller, though it doesn't seem to recognize all of them by default (it worked with my Xbox 360 one, not with a friends PS4 one).

Fun game, overall. There is a ton of things to do, stuff like housing is already in place, and there's lots of different things to find in the world. Combat system is pretty interesting, and once you're not just doing simple stuff, standing still mashing buttons mindlessly will get you killed. The ability to quickly dodge around and be reactive makes it pretty interesting. The game has a very strong "silly" vibe, which I guess was to be expected from a sci-fi game with what are essentially cat girls and crazy rat mad scientists. Server issues have been a thing. Nothing too horrible on the server that I'm on, but there has been downtime and a lot of hotfixes. It's largely the standard new game from a new studio launch woes. If you're looking for something to do in the MMO space, it's definitely worth a look.

Between this and the 2.0 patch, we've now got most of what Diablo 3 should have been (online only is still a bummer). The game is way more fun to play than before, the AH distraction is gone, drops aren't 99% worthless, crafting actually creates useful stuff, adventure mode lets you go kill things without repeating the story, and paragon levels give you some kind of character progression. All in all, much better than the original release.

This is a good game. The simulation part works well, each person has a home and job, and how you design your city matters. You can make mistakes that lead to losses pretty easily. It's good looking, runs well, and is pretty polished. The only lacking thing right now is the lack of things like scenarios. Once you figure things out and get your settlement going well, you kind of have nothing else to do except make it bigger. Hopefully the developer will be able to expand on his success in the future, because the core game is much better than some other recent city builders.

The game systems seem to work pretty well. The gameplay is pretty good, the soundtrack is pretty good. The writing is just awful, and the storyline ranges from silly to stupid depending on who is talking at the moment. There's too many flagrant moments where the game brushes aside questions of what is going on with "you'll find out later", and the main character just accepts that. There's better games out there to spend your money on.

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time7
Aug 21, 2013
Well, the game itself is pretty good. It's PvZ again, with some new plants and zombies, and the interesting plant food mechanic. Nothing wrong with that. Had they just charged $5 for it, I'd have paid it, played happily, and this score would be an 8 or 9. Instead we get this weird "free" model where some plants are locked behind absurdly expensive fees. Getting enough keys to open everything up feels kind of grindy at times. But the worst thing is the coins. The coins are now used to buy power ups instead of unlocking things. The weakest power up is an extra plant food, which is pretty strong to get out of a jam or get a head start with a surge of sun. The other three are completely broken and amount to I Win buttons. So long as you use them sparingly (or not at all), you'll have plenty of coins and never have to spend a dime. If you start relying on them... well they totally break the game. You can pay to win in the most literal way there is. It's clear that they were added so that they could sell coins to players without the patience to learn how to play the game well enough to beat all the levels. and it weakens the entire game. My advice? Forget the three power buttons exist, and try to use the extra plant food one as rarely as you can. You'll have a lot of fun with the game if you do that. If you use those buttons frequently, there is no real challenge except paying the bill.

Dragon's Crown8
Aug 7, 2013
The side scrolling beat-em-up game here is top notch. There's skill and item systems that give you a lot of options in how you set up for each level, and the game is better for it. The storyline isn't overly memorable, but accomplishes the goal of giving direction to the game. I find the narrator's accent suits the game surprisingly well, though there's other voice options if you don't like it (nice touch). The animations are great. The art style is polarizing, as I'm sure you've noticed. Due to that, I'm ignoring it in this review. The big thing for me is the multiplayer. Actually playing levels with friends is so smooth that it's like playing locally. I was impressed by that. I was NOT impressed by the MP matchmaking/lobby system. There's no way to invite a friend to your game. What you have to do is open a slot in the tavern (and fill any other slots you don't want with people with NPCs, then close them), then walk to the stables/gate and wait. Your friend then has to find you and join your game... except when the game thinks you're in another area that can't add people. Which it does, frequently. There's no friends-only mode, if you jump into a level without waiting your friend to join, a random person might join instead. Once you finish the level you go back to your respective towns and next level you have to go through the join dance again. As levels are all under 20 minutes long, you'll be doing this a lot. About half the time we had to go in and out of zones and turn network mode off/on before it'd pick up that the game was available to join. It's odd how inept this part is, given how smooth and great the actual online gameplay is once you get it going. Despite the issues MP is still great, particularly if you can get voice chat going with friends and you try to take complimentary skills. Voice chat is also handy to tell someone to stop moving when you're trying to activate rune magic (which is cumbersome to do in combat). There's a limited number of levels, and they're not huge. Hopefully they add more in DLC. They do get branching paths later in the game which does add some extra levels. Bosses are varied and interesting. All in all this is a great entry in the genre, and it's nice to see it get some love again.

Endless Space: Disharmony5
Jun 27, 2013
I *REALLY* look forward to when I can edit this review to something positive, because I love Endless Space and wanted to love Disharmony. But the bugs. The most grievous is that the ship design screen was changed to only show the top version of every module type you have available. Instead of showing 5 kinds of shields, it shows 1. The problem is that if the top one requires a resource you don't have (either because you don't have it yet or lost it due to war), you can't tell the game to build an older version. In effect by researching newer shields you lose the ability to place any shields on new/updated ship designs. It's crazy that it was released like that. I'm also having performance issues, and a lot of the combat mechanics are more opaque now than they were before, such that it's hard to tell what's going on. There's a lot of things to like, but ship design is so fundamental that it takes a lot away. When they get things polished up, I'll be very happy to rewrite this review.

Alright, this is everything that Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt isn't. It's an interesting concept. It's witty. The writing is fun. The voice acting is entertaining. Characters show up that actually make sense, and interact with each other. Best of all, if you've ever played in a real tabletop RPG campaign, you'll see an awful lot of that going on here. It's a work of art. Bonus points for one really great sequence that I won't mention to avoid spoilers. If you like Borderlands 2 and RPGs, this is a must play.

Revising downward, because the game is still broken and at this point it's just a total joke. Even Polygon's review has been changed to 40 (from 95) on their website. EA has resorted to disabling all the social features that they claimed made always-online necessary in the first place, so now it's just a bald faced lie. It's DRM, period. That DRM is breaking the game. As it stands right now this product is not fit for sale. They also disabled cheetah speed, a feature of every other Simcity game. Pathetic. If you get past all the server problems, the city size is still absurdly small (no doubt because their servers can't handle larger ones), but who cares about that when the game flat out doesn't work reliably?

There's some minor issues, the most annoying of which being that sometimes moving people around inside a UFO is really a hassle due to the roof blocking your view, and other times people won't want to move to high or low ground. Some areas could also be beefed up in complexity (interception), but on the whole they really nailed this one. The game is addictively fun and brilliantly captures the "just one more turn" feeling. Fans of the 1993 version will be able to find things to complain about, as this is not a straight remake. It's a 2012 take on the game, and while not everything is the same the spirit of the classic version is alive and well here. My thoughts about this game were crystalized while playing with my wife. Steam went down. Our LAN game kept right on working as if nothing had ever happened... unlike with Diablo 3, where a server hiccup gets you killed. I could stop there, but the game is more fun, the items are more enjoyable to find due to more interesting effects, building up a character is more fun (and permanent). Sure the graphics are simpler, but they work really well and for $20 they're definitely up to the task. The bottom line here is that this is what DIablo 3 should have been.

Endless Space8
Aug 15, 2012
I wouldn't give this game a 10, but I understand why some people are. The 4X genre is starved for good games, and most recent entrants have been half-baked buggy disasters. Endless Space is polished and plays well. Gameplay wise, Endless Space is really a game about two phases of play. The early game is great. Exploration is tricky. Some planets are hard to colonize. Keeping people happy on a budget matters. You don't want to lose ships. Leaders are highly valuable. In the late game a lot of that changes, however. Colonization is cheap. It's dirt easy to keep everyone happy. Resources flow freely, even at low tax rates. Production rates get so high on good systems that fleet spam becomes a huge problem. Ship design at that point also becomes about glass cannons or guessing games between which weapon he's using right now, and picking the right defense for it. That said, those are balance issues and the core game here is fun. It needs some tweaks to become "great", but is already "good" today.

The only problem I have with it (aside from Vincent being a big jerk) is that the difficulty can get really crazy in some places. Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods & Kings5
Jun 24, 2012
It's still Civ 5. Depending on what you think of Civ 5, that'll either be a good thing or a bad thing. For me it was a bad thing. The new systems don't feel well integrated. Religion in particular is built around yet another pool of points that you gather up from buildings, then spend on stuff. You know, like every other system in the game. You pick some buffs, then you can pretty much ignore it. Since diplomacy is so schitzophrenic you can ignore it for that purpose, and it spreads on its own (eventually), or you can use a missionary or great prophet to speed it up. Great prophets have no other real use then spreading religion, unlike other great people (who you can buy with faith later, likely added because the points would be virtually worthless once the religion is buffed up otherwise). Spies are really limited in what they can do, and since tech stealing is so prevalent you'll want to use a couple to defend against it pretty much all the time. That makes the whole system really limited and passive. If you thought Civ 5 was a great game already then you'll enjoy this, but IMO Civ 4 did both of these systems better.

There was two things that Sins needed most: multicore support and a 64 bit version. Rebellion adds neither. So if you like huge maps and mods, you'll still encounter slowdowns at some point. Getting that out of the way, what they did add is new toys that are pretty fun to play with. Doing things like eating planets for resources, building a ship that's just a giant gun, and attacking people by flying Starbases at them are pretty awesome. They're also pretty imbalanced. So all in all this is kind of a mixed bag. If you liked Sins before and you're okay with balance issues being present in this version (hopefully to be patched later), then you'll enjoy Rebellion.

Revising my review down a point after playing it more... because I'm already bored. The real difficulty for me here is that while the hack and slash aspect is well designed, so much of the other stuff was screwed up. The story is both lame and unnecessary at the same time. It feels like there's less content then previous games. The server issues are very well known at this point. The amount of lousy drops is really something compared to previous Diablo games, and Blizzard's admission that drops were deliberately made worse in order to protect the auction house economy is just shocking. Who plays Diablo for an auction house? The entire heart of the franchise is killing stuff for loot, not pretending that we're on eBay! (And the less said about the real money AH, the better.) It was fun for a little while, but that didn't last. At this point I think I'm already close to being done with it. For the price, the value wasn't really there. Terribly disappointed considering Blizzard has always delivered before.

Fun game. The tactical side of it is great. I tend to autoresolve a lot, but there's also RTS stuff for those who like it. Worked fine after that. This far after release that kind of quality issue really isn't acceptable, and I'm docking points for it.

Some of these complaints are just silly. I swear people buy a game without doing any kind of research on it. They didn't promise some revolutionary new gameplay. They pretty much promised WoW, only with Star Wars and a better plot. They delivered that. If you're disappointed because you made up wild expectations and then didn't get them, that's your problem and not the fault of the game. I'm docking some points for the UI being clumbsy, but the game itself is quite fun and the story is great (particularly compared to the disaster that is Cataclysm).

Reminds me a lot of Sanctum, only with loot and levelups. That's a good thing. This game is quite a lot of fun in co-op, which is the best way to play it. Unfortunately sometimes TrendyNet boots me, and I'm docking a point for that issue. So call it an 8 once they get the networking perfected.

Sorry, meant to write a review for another game. Never played this one but I want to clear the old review, so I'll just give it a 7 and hope people don't get too mad. :)

I didn't like this game on first impressions, because the UI blows. I had some real buggy behavior sending messages to people, the keyboard controls are kind of ****, and in general the UI lacks polish. A friend of mine suggested I use an Xbox 360 gamepad instead, which does work better. The first level is also pretty dull just because the enemies really don't fight back. But it grew on me pretty quickly once I got farther into it. There's actually a pretty fun beat em up here, with a fair bit to do. I haven't found any particular need to spend real money on anything yet, though the outfits seem pretty popular on other players. Worth a look, provided you go in prepared for a learning curve on the UI.
