Sonic Mania0
Mar 27, 2023
VERY overrated. To be fair, it's fun at times. It even has a few new ideas thrown into the mix. But those ideas are (very) small steps in the evolution of the Sonic formula. Not once did I have a "wow" moment and the last zone in particular was notably and disappointingly tedious. IMHO, Sonic 1,2,3 are far superior (never played Sonic CD), and Mania is overhyped just because it's fan-made. As a stand-alone game some people might find it to be a more polished entry, but in the wider context (i.e. if you've already played Sonic 1,2,3) it is not that fun. Had this been released by Sega as Sonic 4 back in the day, critics would be panning it as unimaginative, uninspired, and lacking in fresh ideas.

Great game. Even better on the Switch! The art is GORGEOUS and the battle animations are just my cup of tea! Check out some gameplay and you'll know pretty quick if this is for you.

I'm not finished with the game yet, but I felt compelled to go on metacritic and gush about it. The art is GORGEOUS. The music is really good. The translation is not perfect, but it's good enough. You could really tell the developers are big fans of French history and military tactics, as am I. Attention to detail and battle animations is what makes this game a 10 for me. I always did prefer the feeling of Warsong/Langrisser over Fire Emblem, and historical fiction over fantasy. Did I mention, the art is INCREDIBLE? It made me nostalgic for the days of anime when more attention was paid to hair and clothes. Anyway, going to get back to playing!

I'm not sure why this game is so highly rated. The platforming is frustrating. Not hard, just frustrating. The art is nice, but the animation is terrible. The controls are sluggish. And it doesn't bring anything new to the metroidvania genre. Why is the map not visible at the same time? Why is it such a pain to switch gear? I really wanted to like this game, but I just can't.

I was so excited for this game too. It is simply unacceptable to release a broken game and then string people along with the promise of updates that will fix everything. The industry at large should not be so forgiving; it hurts their credibility.

Awesome game. Does justice to the original. The people who think the game is repetitive are binge-players who subsist on a steady diet of open-world samey games. If you only have 1-2 hours of free time per day, Doom is PERFECT.

I was really excited for this game. REALLY excited. Pirate's Curse was one of the best games I've ever played and the prospect of playing similar in HD had me pre-ordering (something I usually don't do). Boy was I disappointed. Btw, I still 100%ed the game in order to give this a fair review. But first, The Good: -clean visuals -epic and sexy Giga Mermaid battle -very thoughtful use of transformations, especially the mouse one -the first couple of music tracks are amazing. Kaufman did a great job. But after that, the music goes downhill. Then, The Bad: -I glitched out twice and had to restart the game (in one of the powerup rooms, and as the mouse my camera got stuck zoomed in). -the circular Scuttle town is disorienting And finally, The Ugly: -the character models are very childish -the enemy models are very childish -the warp dance does not take you to the end of the world, but only to the last section which you gave to grind over and over again if you're trying to just get back to town after looking for another item with your new powerup/transformation. The game is still worth it on sale, but otherwise support the developer by buying Pirate's Curse instead.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero8
Dec 27, 2016
I would give this game a 10 if not for 2 issues. #1 It glitched out and crashed on me in the bat transformation room. After getting it, I jumped off to check for secrets and got stuck below the room. #2 The character design is a bit less sexy, and more cutesy. The art for Pirate's Curse was tops imo.

Dec 14, 2016
I think this game deserves an 8. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. You know what you're getting and you'll get it in spades. But I'm giving it a 10 to counterbalance the biased critics' reviews. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If the game has fanservice, especially with an anime aesthetic, critics will give it an unfairly negative review so people don't think they're "creepy." **** is "progressive" and has LGBT characters in it, you can be sure it will get unwarranted rave reviews. Some critics' need for social brownie points is unprofessional at best and pathetic at worst.

I bought my first and only amiibo to play couch co-op for this game. I've been playing through it with my brother and it is an absolute blast! It is the BEST couch co-op game I've played on the Wii U-- better than SM3DW, Rayman, Guacamelee, DK:TF, NSMBU, and Kirby's Yarn. Plus, it's a Wii U Exclusive! If you have a Wii U and a friend to play with, do yourself a favor and get the amiibo! Btw, I highly recommend making player 2 "classic knight" as well. Custom Knight is not as fun. Enjoy!

Langrisser Re:Incarnation -TENSEI-10
Jun 26, 2016
Let's get this out of the way: The battle animations are bad. The map grid is ugly. In order to fix the majority of the game's problems, the developers should have looked to Langrisser 1/Warsong for inspiration. Having said that, after turning off the battle animations and the map grid, you are still left with a GREAT game. There is quite a lot of fanservice--think Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, not Senran Kagura--which I love, especially when combined with the relationship building. The game is not particularly hard, but that might be for the best since you can't save mid-level. One new thing I liked was the fact that you had to earn the ability to hire more troops instead of being given the ability to hire 6-8 squads up front. Still, I think the balance is a little off and you should be able to hire 2 squads right away in order to give the commander a more special feel. Anyway, I'm starting to ramble. tl;dr If you liked Warsong or Der Langrisser and you like fanservice, then GET THIS GAME. You will not regret it. 8.5/10. If you don't care for fanservice, the real score might be closer to 7.8/10.

I was a huge fan of DKCR and I really wanted to like this game, but I just couldn't. The load times, as others have said, is bad, but they would be tolerable if the rest of the game ran smoothly--it doesn't. Controls feel heavy and unresponsive. Action-intensive areas are laggy. The visuals themselves are stunning, but unfortunately I think the Wii U is just not up to the task of rendering them smoothly. I tried to get into this game 3 times but couldn't get over how muddy it feels. Perhaps if they port it to the NX, I'll give it another shot. But my other concern is the poor level design. Levels were much too long with too much emphasis on exploration that leads nowhere (e.g. water areas where you just collect bananas). But maybe with the bump in gameplay speed/lack of lag will make it feel better. Just can't recommend this game and regret purchasing at full retail.

This is the most unique, daring game I've played in the last 5 years--and the most satisfying. The story is amazing and more than makes up for any shortcomings in the puzzle aspect of the game. I would love to see more games like this from Atlus, dealing with adult themes. This is probably a Western bias, but I much prefer plots dealing with college life or beyond instead of the usual high school setting. Please please please port this to the PS Vita!!!!! And please give us a sequel!!

Wow, what a pleasant surprise. The game is extremely rich and engaging. After level 15, all hell breaks loose (in a good way). The girls are extremely hot, especially Monica. My only gripe (-2) is that some of the monsters look a bit too young (Vorpy, Werecat, Grimoire, Obariyon, Namahage, etc). Otherwise, perfect game.

In reality, this game deserves an 8.5, but I'll give it a 10 to offset all the anime/fanservice haters that rate it a 0 without even completing half the game. 0.5 points off for muddy textures and 1 point off for Mirai. I know the social boundary for what is acceptable is a gray area--Yagyu, being a good example. But no matter how you look at it, Mirai cannot be considered anything but prepubescent. Her depiction approaches the 10-12 year old range. Now that I got that out of the way: Most of the girls are incredibly sexy. Fight mechanic is great. Japanese voices are amazing. Love the Japanese setting. There's more to the game than just fanservice, although that part is awesome too obviously. We need more games like this!

I can't speak for the multiplayer, but the single player is the worst. I never found myself even wanting to play after Chapter 1 of Chronicles mode. I did, however, manage to trudge through Chapter 4. It could be my bias since I'm an 80's baby, but I much prefer games like Street Fighter (not alpha) that don't make you memorize countless sequences of similar moves. I also hate the rock paper scissors mechanic.

Overhyped extremely boring game. The black and white (and red) style is terrible and it was very hard to tell what was going on at times due to poor contrast. The violence/gore is there, but not nearly as exciting as many fans claim. I found myself just going through the killing motions after a while just to get enough points to progress to the next area. Too much grinding. And if you take away the grinding, there isnt much left to play.

Thank god I bought this on sale and only wasted $10 instead of $20. I don't know if it was the advertising or what, but I was under the impression that you would be flyibg through parts of the body, like the heary, brain, or liver and shooting relevant microbes, thus healing the body of that condition/disease. Instead, you get a bunch of generic levels on "cells" with random microbes showing up at any time. There was so much potential to make this game great and the developers failed. No wonder the game keeps going on sale.

I am very disappointed in Nintendo for making this game. It plays almost exactly the same as the New SMB for Wii--same sound effects, same music, same graphics (except the upgrade to HD which is not that dramatic given the graphical style of mario games. Miyamoto said he wanted to release a mario game with each new console, which I agree with, but please do so by making a completely new game, not by just increasing the difficultu and adding a few things. I don't need my mario games to become ever more complex. I just need them to be FUN. And New SMB Wii U is simply not fun if you've already played New SMB Wii.
