Sonic: Lost World5
Oct 17, 2014
Alright here is an interesting little mess in the Sonic franchise. When I first heard of this game I really didn't know what to make of it and frankly its still very confusing to me. The story in this game is almost unbearable to witness but here it is. Sonic and Tails are pursuing Eggman and his two robot cronies in an attempt to get back a capsule of animals that he had stolen. In a desperate attempt to save the creatures, Eggman damages the Tornado (Tails' plane) and forces the duo to land on a mysterious planet/floating isle called the "Lost Hex". It's a very interesting looking place to say the least and the opening scene is unsurprisingly incredible for the beginning of the game. Unfortunately, unlike Little Planet, the Lost Hex is given no narrative about itself at all and is merely.....a place. At least in Sonic CD gave a little backstory about Sonic going to visit Little Planet in the place where it only appears once every year and that it was rather mysterious in nature. Here is not the case and is never questioned by Sonic and Tails. Anyways the Lost Hex is home to the Deadly Six, easily the most boring and mundane villains I have ever seen in a Sonic game. They hardly have any personality and while they can be funny at times, I find them completely uninteresting. The cutscenes in this game are also pathetic I must say and while I'm at it I will confess my complete distaste for the tone SEGA has been making these Sonic games these days. Recently since Colors, SEGA gave Sonic and many of his friends new voice actors and gave Roger Craig Smith the new role for the blue blur, who he has had for the past 4 years. I really despise Sonic's voice as it really doesn't sound how I imagined him to be. In previous titles (even Colors to an extent), Sonic was rad, cool, a hero willing to do anything it took to save the world and look cool doing it (but not showing off too much). Here, Sonic is seriously dumbed down to an Adventure Time style character who jokes about everything all the time and really fails at it most of the time. Really I can't believe the lines I hear Sonic say sometimes like when one of the crazy Zeti's announcing he's about to kick Sonic, with Sonic retorting "Oh I know just where to kick YOU"! The delivery is off with Sonic's lines and the script isn't helping anything, but your hearing this from someone who was spoiled with the Adventure games and Unleashed. Moving on, Eggman loses control of the Deadly Six with the help of Sonic thoughtlessly destroying the device keeping them under his control, and the two teams end up having to team up to survive the Six and save their home world down below. Now after some painfully simplistic dialogues and a very bipolar Tails who can't decide if he hates Sonic or not (they're arguing over Eggman joining or something idk it really comes out of nowhere), Tails gets kidnapped in the 5th World much to the fault of Sonic and it's really bogus to me what happens next. The game is ending, the planet is in a crisis with Sonic's friends getting hurt in the process down below, and Tails is about to be transformed into a robot by the Six. What bothers me here is how they make Tails COMPLETELY helpless. Did he FORGET that he could run as fast as Sonic?! Tail's is Sonic's sidekick! Why has SEGA been ruining Tails by just making him a techy and a pilot for the Tornado whenever Sonic needs one?! This has been bothering me increasingly since Unleashed and I think their is no reason for it. Anyways a lot of boring stuff happens later. Eggman "dies", Sonic is all alone, and the Six turn a very dumb looking robot Tails on Sonic, only to be given the turnaround almost immediately (how Tails kept himself from being roboticized I'll never know) with Sonic giving the chase once more. The Six are defeated only to.....disappear and Eggman reappears in his clone mech to the final boss in Sonic Colors and is quickly defeated, with power once again returning to the planet (their was a power **** machine I forgot to mention but there you go). Okay the gameplay is **** that's just it, it's a convoluted mess, with confusing spherical world design that I don't like, a parkour system that's only fun SOMETIMES, and inconsistent level design that becomes UNBEARABLE later in the game. This game has the worst level design since Sonic 06 (yeah I said it). The music still good though but has some annoying tunes I don't care for (like the main theme). Also I feel like this level design makes Sonic look like he's trying to copy Mario Galaxy which does fit well with Sonic. Also the bosses are pathetically easy and boring as heck too. The speed is very inconsistent too with the game switching between 3d and 2d views. The 3d is good but the 2d brings Sonic to a slow down that regresses the player's inertia. Also the introduction of a run button is not a good choice imo. The game really just feels bland and was not really designed well. All in all I would not recommend his one.

I must admit I have wanted to review this game for a while as it has quite a story with me. I used to actually almost hate this game back in the day when I first laid my eyes on it. Then I was 5 and had already played the first 3 numbered games in the classic trilogy and it was so confusing to me that I couldn't understand the time posts and how it worked. The music was also jarring to me and it seemed quite eerie and scary to me, yet it would quickly spark my imagination to the great heights that my mind would often take me at the time. I wouldn't see a shred of the game until very much later on the Sonic Gems Collection (I'm aware this isn't that version but that's besides the point) and wouldn't grow to like it till much later. Now the newest and greatest version of this classic masterpiece is finally out and I must say that it's a MUST BUY! While the original game had it's share of problems such as a horrible spindash and not as smooth physics (though it still did it's job), this ultimate version corrects all those mistakes and makes an already incredible game for the most part....perfect. You can now choose as Tails to play and it's really invigorating and incredibly fun, the spindash is now able to be changed to its far more versatile Sonic 2 version, and the music is now interchangeable between two FANTASTIC soundtracks: the USA version and the Japanese version. Regardless of the fact that both soundtracks give very different styles, they BOTH fit to me and BOTH give the game the deep atmospheres needed to identify the game the way it is. I personally like the American soundtrack very much but if you want to start I really couldn't give you a good answer to that. I have been very surprised at how good the Japanese soundtrack is though. Anyways the time post gimmick is revolutionary and instantly changes how you go through stages, trying to find the robot machines, get 50 rings for the special stage at the end of the level, and changing the future to its brighter evolutionary states. The special stages themselves are actually my favorite in the series I think. They have really surreal backgrounds, incredible music, and have an somewhat mysticism to them that I can't explain. Come to think of it, all the backgrounds in this game are artistically stellar and I sometimes find myself getting lost in them when the game stops long enough for me to The super peel out move is a more than welcome addition to Sonic's moveset and is my preferred method of , even more than the spindash. All in all Sonic CD for the IOS is just plain fun and a good time for anyone 14 or older. The first few games are more suited for younger kids, but this classic Sonic game has grown on me more than any other and to a great extent. Please do yourself a favor and get this game!

What an underrated masterpiece ****! What is wrong with this game? I can't really think of anything that what! The stages are beautifully designed and crafted by the most careful of hands. The characters (though only 4 of them really needed) are fantastically unique to each other. Though to be fair, I would like to see more costumes (although I think that's just me not finding them). The difficulty is perfect also and the adventure is meaty. Just one thing I can't help noticing. While the main adventure is huge, the game would almost feel a tiny bit short if not for the remastered origins levels (also a great game by the way). The enemies are varied, the bosses are memorable, and the fun factor is off the scale. I'm gonna come out and say that this is among the greatest platformers I have ever played and I would even put it above Mario dare I say it. There are so many different things that characterize each level and world you explore through. And might I add that the music levels are absolutely A BLAST! I just wish there were more of them. With so many surprises around every corner, thousands of laughs to be had, and many memories that are sure to never completely leave your head, your looking at a masterpiece in this generic world of gaming we've come to see these days. I would also like to give a dozen nods to the team who produced the music for this game as it exceeds origins in every way. The only thing I would like is a little more story to the game. But this doesn't really matter as the game has so much character to it, you are forced to use your imagination throughout your journey (just as we did in the original Rayman, and Sonic games). Pick this game up everyone! I don't care if you haven't played anything in the series, their's no way you could hate this experience. May Rayman live long and thrive for a long time. Thank you Ubisoft.

Super Smash Bros. Melee10
May 16, 2013
What I consider to be one of, if not THE greatest fighting game to ever grace not just the Gamecube, but the fighting genre as a whole. Super Smash Bros. Melee achieves something that all fighting games wish to achieve: lasting fun. This game has aged without a wrinkle in the past 12 years it's been out. Nintendo couldn't even beat their own lasting appeal of this game with Brawl (which I thought was a bit too slow). From the moment the amazing opening is played, to your very last GAME, this is a classic for the ages. Not only is the gameplay quick, but it's easy to pick up and play, and the intentionally made technical tricks in the game make it the most versatile fighting game to date. Your ability to gain more skill in this game is practically unlimited in this game. You aren't restricted with the movements of your character. You can reduce your recoil when you hit the ground, slide around the floor, and string combos around in the most creative ways if your good enough. The music is fantastic. Really legendary in the video game environment, right down to the announcer's voice when you begin and end a game. The Adventure mode is perhaps the perfect distraction in single player sector, but while memorable, it's more of an imperfection that we soon come to see improved in the next game. Event matches are a blast, and personally I find them a little more fun than Brawl's. It's creative how Nintendo can fit so many neat modes in this game. Their's slow melee, lighting melee, big, tiny, etc. The photo feature in the game is the most useless addition however, as you can't take pictures unless you choose the mode and plan something to happen. This is another feature that's fixed in the next generation. Still this is the most solid fighting game I have ever played and is a blast to play with friends and family alike. Also, I would like Nintendo to bring back the old handicap system. It's much more fun to gang up on someone with naturally more strength than you, instead of just some percentage starter. If you have a Gamecube, PLAY THIS GAME NOW! This is a gleaming emerald in the tropical sun, as far as fighting games go. Do yourself a favor and find some friends to play this tonight. Hopefully the next Smash game will be even better than this.

Sonic Generations9
May 3, 2013
The game I had been saddened to hear. Well I was because I didn't have the means of playing it, but I suddenly found an Xbox under my Christmas tree.......WITH THE GAME IN IT! I was stoked and boy was the game better than I thought! You play as Sonic and Sonic (you know the classic and modern versions) as you try to save the universe from a time tearing demi god. It's been 20 years and Sonic is celebrating his birthday with every known chararcter in the Sonic universe (well Mighty must have missed the notice again) until everyone but Sonic suddenly gets attacked and **** into different times. Sonic wakes up to find his world in a white void and eventually meets Tails and their classic counterparts. Both Sonics must run through all the stages that harken back to Sonic's past to fix the timeline and their wordl form falling to pieces. Modern Sonic plays just like he did in Unleashed (with a little less flexibility). Fast speeds, boosting, drifting, and the homing attack are what make up these stages along with an incredibly superior balance in platforming than Unleashe's stages. Classic Sonic almost plays like he did in the Genesis days. I say almost because while it's fun to play in this style all over again, the physics are taken away from premise. You can't gather speed by rolling in loop de loops and hills without spamming the all new overpowered spin dash (which you just hold X whenever you want to use it). You can't jump on enemies and expect a higher jump when you land on them. It's always the same bounce which is a real bummer. Even despite the slight lack of momentum based gameplay, Classic Sonic is just as fun to play as Modern Sonic, if not, more. The stages range from the Genesis days to Dreamcast, and then our beloved Modern games (some aren't that bad people). Each stage has different designs and are so diverse in style and location, you can't help but fall in love with Sonic's history once more as you speed past all the enhanced famililarities you know and love from each game. The story isn't really that much to behold, but it serves it's purpose. I just wish you could play as Knuckles or something. Plus alot of potential was lost in this game, as it should have been longer with more stages and classic versions of characters.Still though this is a fun game and you will want to keep coming back to it again and again, Especially if you want to collect all the extra artwork, screen, and movies. It's the perfect game for Sonic fans. Here's hoping the next game will be even better.

Luigi's Mansion8
May 3, 2013
Luigi's first game and one of the creepiest games I've played (without the horror aspect), Luigi's Mansion, is one of those little gems people often overlook when it comes out. Fortunately people see the game's incredible impact now and frankly so do I. This time the guys at Ninty I guess watched Ghostbusters one too many times because this game just simply screams that movie. Luigi wins a mansion from a contest that he never entered and asks Mario to meet him there to see it. Luigi arrives at the location (which is conveniently in the perfect horror setting) and finds the creepy house staring at him in the face. Luigi decides to check the place out, but can't find Mario. Suddenly in the midst of this EXTREMELY dark place, ghosts attack him. Fortunately Luigi is sort of saved by an odd old man named Prof. E. Gadd. They both escape the overwhelming onslaught of spirits and retreat to E. Gadd's nearby lab. Luigi tells him about his predicament and asks him if he had seen his brother. E. Gadd remembers seeing someone in red enter the spooky place (undoubtedly Mario) and agrees to help Luigi find his brother and his missing ghost paintings that had escaped since the mansion appeared (thats right the mansion appeared out of nowhere right next to his house). In this game Luigi uses the only arsenal capable of defending against ghosts. A vacuum cleaner, flashlight, and cool looking Gameboy (dubbed Gameboy Horror) to hold data, a map, and find hidden items. The device to capture ghosts is the infamous Poltergeist 3000, which E. Gadd had apparently been using to catch the spirits all those years before. Luigi can catch ghosts by flashing them into shock, which then leaves them open to be vacuumed. The ghosts all have health though, and special boss ghosts especially have an enormous amount. The key is to explore all 4 sections of the vast mansion, while looking for clues on Mario's whereabouts. Eventually you meet Boos in the game, which begins a huge hunt for them while you progress in the game. Soon you find out that Mario is trapped in a painting by these fiends and you must catch them all to make it to him. The leader of this army of ghouls is none other than King Boo himself. This game is really fun, but what makes it so distinct is the concept. Ghost hunting is a very lightly touched genre in gaming and surprisingly it's a perfect fit for Luigi's cowardly, but reluctantly persevering persona as he desperately fights not only the many ghosts in the mansion, but his own fear to save his older brother. The atmosphere is scary for a Nintendo game. The dark portions of the Mansion bring on a very grumpy tune that I'm sure everyone remembers and it's unsettling, but charming to see Luigi hum it along to keep himself calm. The difficulty is pretty tough, especially during the black out scene. Overall though the game provides lots of entertainment but is kind of short. The sequel would fix this, but the game does not suffer much for its length. Collecting money really makes you a money grubber and gems are hard to get, but reward you in the long run. I would give this game a spin if your interested. It's really an underrated classice.

Paper Mario10
Apr 10, 2013
In what is quite possibly one of the most creative and unique moves in the video game industry, Mario moves into the world of paper of all things, in the first Mario RPG since "Legend of the Seven Stars". Surprisingly the game was incredible as it introduced many incredible staples and prowess in the RPG genre. I remember playing this game since I was a kid and it is still making such an impact today. The game has such a nostalgic and childish atmosphere that you can't help but feel like your going through memory lane as you play. And if you don't crack one smile during this whole game....your dead inside. From the very beggining you find the same old Bowser kidnaps Peach storyline far more meaningful in this game than most other Mario games. Not just because their is a little more in depth look at the story, but the new locations, and characters you see along the way. And the unique obstacles you will have overcome to find the seven star sages. The game plays great in the RPG department, as it is easy to learn and master once you get the hang of timing your attacks perfectly. Badges only make the fights more interesting as you learn new techniques and utilize their full potential. The variety in this game is outstanding and you will no doubt run into a few skirmishes here and there, especially if you get too and end up accepting a challenge from some other **** which you learn the true limits of your own strength. While their are many easy baddies here in this game, I wouldn't really call this game easy. The puzzles can easily turn devious on you and their are rivals that will give you a hard time. Still the bosses are usually easy one you figure their weaknesses but they become essential to your survival if you just try the same old tactic just like any other baddie. The partners are charming and really make the game that much more enjoyable in and out of battle. Following you like a pokemon, each partner has a unique ability that you will likely have fun using throughout the game. Like I said before this game is memorable, and will really make you look at Mario in a different light. There are so many things to do even after you defeat Bowser.....even though you will always start back at you last checkpoint after the credits roll. Making recipes, delivering letters, finding special items, and even challenging against a kung fu master who's stronger than Bowser himself! Like I said this game is truly enjoyable and quite a memorable experience. The ending still makes me shed tear as it really brings you back. This is truly a great beggining to a great series.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask10
Mar 7, 2013
How do you make an already perfect game a worthy sequel that could quite possibly be even better? I don't know but somehow Nintendo managed to do just that. The sequel to Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, is a game I've wanted to play for a long time. I always was the game at the store, but I always thought it was simply a remake of Ocarina....I couldn't have been more wrong. This game is a tension driver as your world is about to end and you must find all the missing masks, armed with only you sword, shield, and Ocarina as the only things keeping the moon at bay from destroying the planet and saving the world from a mad orphan. Majora's Mask has taken possession of the Skull Kid and even Link isn't strong enough to stop him alone. Getting to each of the 4 dungeons is in itself, a challenge. The whole world is almost as big as Ocarina's world, but your seriously more restricted this time in the game. The only way to progress through the strory is collect all the masks of power to find a way to stop the Suicidal moon. The game changer here is that you only have 3 Days to do it and with that moon hangin over your head literally all the time, you can't help but feel uneasy when it comes ever closer to your demise. The focus lies primarily on side quests, but that is anything but a bad thing. These quests all have their little personal stories and make you really feel for the sorrow of the people of Termina. Plus all thes stories intertwine with the main conflict and its really interesting to see it all come together in the end. This is a depressing game and while you are driven to save as many people as possible, you must admit to yourself that you can't save them all and thats hard truth you must accept. The challenge in this game is unbelievable so don't be surprised to find yourself staring time all over again before you can take another crack at it. The use of masks is also an awesome change of things and you really have to think out of the box when using them. The ultimate mask Fierce Diety, is also a very important item to use for the final boss since this has to be one of the hardest final bosses I've ever played against. In fact its the last part of the game I haven't beaten yet. The dark atmosphere, tension, story, and unique concept in this game truly makes it an incredible sequel to one of the greatest games ever!

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga10
Mar 7, 2013
Nintneod have truly outdone themselves int he RPG world. Not only are they able to diversify Mario into the realm of turn based gameplay, they manage to make them stand among the best RPG's of this generation. Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is one of those unforgettable experiences. The game is easy to play, but difficult to complete 100%. The game still provides a decent challenge to newcomers though and you can still find yourself in a tight snitch here and there. The story is definitely something to behold and will keep you smiling the whole way through. Mario and Luigi's gameplay system is also pitch perfect. Each with there own unique abilities, the two brothers only way to stay alive is to not get seperated and work together. This craetes some very interesting sections and situations in the game and the brothers can only use their full power when performing team attacks and using these moves successfully will be the deciding factor a fight. The characters are new and fresh, with some returning roles, and the game is just simply memorable as heck. Truly a worthy gem on the game boy advance adn one of my favorite games ever! Check this game out and you won't be dissapointed.

The best collection of games I have and frankly if you have no other way to play the original Sonic games I would highly suggest this collection and the Gems Collection as well. Sonic Unleashed9
Mar 6, 2013
I really must give this gem praise. Sonic really should take another daring crack like this game did. The game was fun and those who deny it are kidding themselves. While it is true that the Where hog levels were not as good as the Day stages, they were still quite fun in its own right. Me and my brother played in cooperative craze trying to beat this. He played the Where hog and me the original Sonic since I wasn't as good as he was in the Night stages. The Day stages are fast paced and fun with platforming in the mix. This new concept in the 3D Sonic formula really drove you into playing for those stages again. The key in these stages was to go really fast, but not get carried away in it as well. Sonic games have always challenged your restraint in speed as the trick to playing cleanly through a stage and it sure doesn't stop in this game either. The only problem is that Sonic is a little slippery to control at times. The Night stages, contrary to popular opinion, were really not that bad. They weren't as fun as the Day stages, but they were fun in their own way and really helped hit home in the atmosphere this game was playing out towards. The only flaw in this plan was that there were too many Night stages to play through. This is really dissapointing because a balance would have really made this game much better than it already is and frankly, it would make me more inclined to play through it again. The story is decent, but its presentaion is the biggest victory over it. Its saving the world from Eggman again, but it really feels like that final battle that you have to keep persevering to finally prevail in the end. The scope of this game makes you really feel like your where you are. In the Arabian area, Italian town, Tropical Island, a bustling city, etc. The music is really where I must give props for. SEGA truly had outdone themselves in an original soundtrack in this game. Its diverse and high spirited, with different cultures added into the mix. The orchestration and jazz band are truly welcome in SEGA music as this is among their best soundtracks. It really brings the adventurous feeling of traveling from country to country, saving the world, meeting new people, etc. One of my biggest gripes about this game is the voice acting. Jason does his best performance as Sonic, but everyone can't be said the same way. Chip's character was also a bit annoying, but still memorable and he did grow on me after a while. Its not the best Sonic game ever, but its still definately an underrated game in the franchise, easily worth the buy, especially the 15 dollars its on sale for these days. If you want the best version of this game I highly suggest getting the Xbox version. Don't pass this game up if your interested.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time10
Mar 1, 2013
Ocarina of Time, the only game I could think of for my first review on Metacritic. Ever since I first got into this game as a kid I was fascinated by the world, exploring everywhere not knowing where I was going or what to do. Despite this I was captured by the deepness the game had to offer by the expensive world **** I wouldn't even get into the story until almost a decade later. The game kept me busy, finding new places with seemingly no end in sight. I would often think the game had literally no end to it. After multiple times renting the game I would finally get a copy for my own eagerly on the Wii, wanting to experience the fullness **** that I had **** I sure wasn't alone in that regard. What I had come to expect was beyond my expectations. I had already played Twilight Princess and that was already a classic to me, but Ocarina of Time went even further than that game could even achieve. The story is simple but well done. The gameplay is as good as it gets, with epic boss battles, clever and balanced puzzles, and an excellent level of challenge that is still unmatched by any game I've played thus far. The atmosphere this world gives is beyond words I could even put down. You want to save Zelda and defeat Ganondorf, and save Hyrule for all the characters you have met along the way and yourself as well. Items are endlessly interesting to discover and you would be surprised to find so many hidden places in one game. Its mind boggling. There are no places to get stuck at without clear and open thinking and exploration. The game doesn't drag on either as you are constantly surprised and interested to see what happens next. To date this is the only game I have ever spent 10 hours playing without stopping. I would never do that again, but that shows how addictive the game is. People say a game is never perfect. Well if this game isn't, it sure comes pretty darn close. I have yet to play a Link to the Past, but I truly do believe that if their is any game that can be called the greatest game ever made, this is one of those games that deserves it. Thank you Nintendo for all the memories and keep going strong.
