Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is easily one of the most ambitious games I have ever experienced, having such a massive amount of new and interesting content that it can take hundreds upon hundreds of hours just to experience everything for the first time. Building off of Monster Hunter Generations, Generations Ultimate takes a massive step up, taking the vast roster and building blocks of Monster Hunter Generations to build an almost endlessly vast experience that can almost be overwhelming at times. The new monster additions as well as hunting styles add great variety to gameplay and some of the monsters in particular stand as the best fights in the franchise. Monster Hunter Generations is a perfect sendoff to the old style of Monster Hunter games as, though it holds many of the same problems as Generations, the quantity and quality of content are both so overwhelming that you can get lost in the game for countless hours, allowing for a truly wonderful appreciation of Monster Hunter's storied past.

Monster Hunter Generations is the culmination of over a decade of Monster Hunter, celebrating the history of the series up to this point with one of the most expansive monster rosters and gameplay systems that mix the old and new together into a wholly unique experience. Monster Hunter Generations is all about the history of Monster Hunter, bringing back old locales, characters, and monsters into a new game. With this emphasis on the past, there is not a significant amount of new monsters, but the ones that do make a debut in this game are top notch. Where most of the new content comes in is the new gameplay system, with four different hunting styles that completely change how every weapon is played along with new special moves called hunter arts that add flashy and strong options during hunts. This game is overall amazing with the massive amount of returning monsters, but the gameplay can also feel almost foreign to the rest of the series due to arts and styles. These additions are overall fun to experiment and play around with but the change in flow and lack of other new content can lead to disappointment if you are a longtime fan of the series.

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak addresses exactly what Monster Hunter Rise needed, allowing Monster Hunter Rise, a game stuck between old and new ideas, to finally come into its own as an entry in the Monster Hunter franchise. The most significant change that Sunbreak introduces is the fundamental fixing of a problem that Rise introduced, the imbalance between hunter and monster in gameplay with the massive mobility allowed by the wirebug. This issue is fixed through monster having abilities to directly counter the wirebug's capabilities or just being so tremendously strong that the strength and mobility is necessary to overcome the challenge. Additionally, Sunbreak has one of the best endgames in the entire Monster Hunter franchise, having a large variety of different monster that provide a considerable challenge with rewards that scale accordingly. Overall, Sunbreak is not a perfect game, but when looking at the improvements it brings to Rise, it stands as one of the best expansions in video games and making it well worth the additional price tag.

Monster Hunter Rise is an overall amazing and fun game that lives up to the Monster Hunter franchise's reputation; however, it does come across as an awkward mix between old and new Monster Hunter causing a sort of identity crisis for the game. Monster Hunter Rise takes heavy inspiration from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, bringing many flashier moves through wirebugs while also generally inflating the damage numbers to make the player feel like they are doing more damage. On the subject of wirebugs, they also allow for an extreme level of mobility unseen in other games in the series, creating a fun sense of speed and power while sacrificing the traditionally methodical gameplay of Monster Hunter. This system is definitely not bad, allowing for fast and fun gameplay that ensures that the action never stops, but with Monsters remaining similar to previous games the increased mobility creates a general feeling of imbalance that places the player above the monster, something that makes the gameplay feel very easy in most situations. Monster Hunter Rise is a dramatic change from previous games in the series, making some of the choices seem rather strange, but taken on its own the game is an extremely fun game and brings more great hunts that we expect from the Monster Hunter series.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a somewhat acquired taste, having many awkward mechanics like swimming along with some seemingly ridiculous hitboxes among other things. These issues, however, either aren't as significant as they may seem, such as with hitboxes as they aren't as bad as they are made out to be, or they grow on you and actually become a positive, like with underwater combat. Concerning the underwater mechanics, it is undeniably a massive debuff to the player to fight underwater, incentivizing players to wait for monsters to come out of the water or outright avoid such fights; however, while the hunter is weakened in the water and water monsters are greatly strengthened, the change in power dynamic can actually be very enjoyable if you are willing to try it out, having to face the monster on its own terms before fighting it on land and being able to turn the tables. Aside from these mechanics, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has a phenomenal roster of monsters that are enjoyable to experience as you work through the game. Until Monster Hunter World, this was also one of the better monster hunter games graphically, running on the Wii U, and it overall still hold up fairly well, looking quite nice despite the limited system.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is the pinnacle of the old generation of Monster Hunter games, refining the old system of Monster Hunter to get rid of most of the broken systems of past games while adding some of the best gameplay additions in the entire franchise. Mounting, the main new addition to the base combat, is extremely satisfying to pull off in a hunt and gives massive payoff to make the act worthwhile. The new weapons, charge blade and insect glaive are most extremely fun and interesting to learn and fit in great with the existing weapon roster. Most significantly, the roster of monster throughout the game is absolutely massive and extremely fun to play through, providing unique challenges with vastly different foes that doesn't get old for hundreds of hours.

Easily one of the best expansions of any game I have ever played, adding an amount of content surpassing that of the base game and filling all the gaps that Monster Hunter World left in its gameplay and overall experience. The game takes the framework of Monster Hunter World and refines it perfectly, providing a good challenge, good endgame, better farming, and overall massively improving the already great Monster Hunter World.

A massive step forward for the Monster Hunter franchise that completely revolutionizes the formula and experience introduced in previous entries, creating a much cleaner game with a greater mainstream appeal compared to the comparatively clunky older games. This entry does lose some charm compared to older titles, however, and the endgame can be a grindy experience filled with rng that can be somewhat repetitive. Overall, the game is amazing and truly filled with content, making for a game that can be played for months without losing its luster.

Overall the game is a phenomenal experience from start to finish with a beautiful world and in depth combat system that varies massively with each weapon feeling like you are playing an entirely different game. The main issues I have with the game are the somewhat limited roster, making the endgame repetitive and the lack of any significant challenge.
