Pure Chess5
May 7, 2014
Pure chess is a good for those who enjoy the classic board game. It offers matches against a CPU leveled 1-10. There are options of different chess pieces and settings to choose from. The music could use a larger library, but the songs offered are great. Pure Chess offers online matches, which offers the bare minimum. It's nice to be able to find people to play against in a matter of minutes; it's an option that may not be available for many people, but for Pure Chess. One of the coolest features of Pure Chess is the tutorial. Pure Chess offers a manual to teach gamers the basics of chess as well more advanced techniques and strategies. Overall Pure Chess is good, but it doesn't do anything that makes this download beyond average.

The Wonderful 1018
Mar 5, 2014
The w101 does a lot of things right. It has a great presentation with fun characters and good humor. These characters deserve their own Saturday morning cartoon. It has a great style that mixes the Power Rangers with Viewtiful Joe. It has great action gameplay focusing on strategy based combat (switching between sword, fist, whip, etc. to defeat your enemies). One issue with the game was the learning curve. The game throws you in head first with little-to-no tutorial and the first few objectives seem chaotic. But once you get the hang of it (by objective 3) the game begins to become very enjoyable. Patience with this game is rewarded. Another issue is the controls. Sometimes you'll find yourself battling the controls to get your characters to make the formation in which you intended. This can lead to frustrating moments, but as with the learning curve, you'll learn to live with the handicap. Overall I recommend the w101 even despite its flaws. It is one of the few worth-playing exclusives on the Wii U console.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds10
Jan 9, 2014
The ability to warp into a moving portrait initially concerned me, but it works flawlessly. The original SNES title is my favorite game. A Link Between Worlds takes the original and improves upon it in every way. The overworld is enjoyable to explore. The dungeons meet the expectation set by the franchise. The combat is as fun as ever. The new weapon system shouldn't worry anyone as it is implemented very well and allows the gamer to choose which dungeon to explore. A Link Between Worlds is so good that it's worth purchasing a 3ds for.

Wii Street U7
Dec 31, 2013
Wii Steet U is a free app that allows you to use the gamepad and your television to travel the world using Google Earth. Me, my friends, and family all enjoy this app very much. Whether you're wondering what a particular city looks like, showing friends a place you visited, or checking out vacation spots, Wii Steet U contains some sort of interest to you. The technology isn't **** and improvements still need to be made (some already have via updated); however, this app will actually be used by most gamers (alongside that Netflix app).

Wii Sports Club7
Dec 31, 2013
Take the original Wii Sports, add better accuracy with the WiiMotion Plus controllers and add online modes to create Wii Sports Club. The game is best with friends playing local multiplayer, but online mode is a great alternative for solo gamers.Unfortunately, the online matches does suffer from internet connection issues when playing others without a strong internet connection. Hopefully those issues will be resolved with future updates and more people joining the Clubs. Bowling is better than ever, and golf is a lot of fun with an extra use of the gamepad (placed on the floor as the tee/golf ball). At $10 per "sport" Wii Sports Club is worth buying your favorite one or two (or three).

Dr. Luigi8
Dec 31, 2013
Dr. Luigi is a blast if you enjoyed the NES original. The downloadable title includes a retro mode which is the original Dr. Mario game with an HD facelift. New modes include L shaped medicine to complicatie strategies and Virus Buster. The best part of Dr. Luigi is its online mode which includes head-to-head battles and leaderboards. For those who enjoyed the earlier iterations of this puzzler, it is a no-brainer to buy it. For those of you who haven't played Dr. Mario, but enjoy games such as Tetris and/or Bejeweled, Dr. Luigi is a safe play at $15.

Wii Fit U7
Dec 23, 2013
Wii Fit U is similar to the Wii version but adds some exercises, dance routines, and games among other features such as gym communities. The coolest new feature is the pedometer that tracks steps and calories burned. If you enjoyed the original then you will enjoy the Wii U version especially if you take advantage of the promotion that gives the game free with a $20 pedometer purchase. My score is only hindered because I expected more updates than what was included in the game (yoga and exercises in particular), otherwise it is a "game" worth owning.

Pokemon X9
Nov 18, 2013
Nintendo brings back the Pokemon series with X and Y. The game continues to make small changes to the well-received RPG formula. The World is large and enjoyable to explore. There are added Pokemon and an added Fairy-type. Nintendo continues to make small tweaks to its series to make the latest installment better than the last. X and Y will satisfy anyone with an appetite for Pokemon goodness.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon7
Oct 21, 2013
Dark Moon is a fun game with unique puzzles and action gameplay. I wish Nintendo permitted more exploration with the mansions and didn't limit the gamer to individual missions. I play my 3ds in short spurts so I struggled to find time to complete a mission or a find a save point. The straight forward "combat" also holds this game back from being great. Dark Moon is still a good game, but contains a few areas of needed improvements.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD9
Oct 21, 2013
The Wind Waker is a great game. The HD updated graphics, added gamepad features (easily accessible menus), and small tweaks to gameplay all make this Nintendo classic even better. I highly recommend this game to all Wii U owners, it is a must-buy for anyone who missed the original, and a worthy purchase for those of you (like me) who played it a decade ago.

Grand Theft Auto V10
Oct 10, 2013
Part V is the best GTA to date and had exceeded its high expectations. The three main character premise works well in both gameplay and story-telling. Rockstar fixed previous issues with added checkpoints, quick saves, and keeping your weapons when arrested. It is a good year of gaming but GTA:V will be many people's Game Of The Year, and it is well-deserved.

Art Academy: Sketchpad7
Sep 19, 2013
This is a great little app that provides drawing enthusiasts a canvas to create on. Art Academy boasts a slew of different colors and utensils to draw with. I was hesitant by the lack of content at first, but I found myself consistently revisiting this app to draw new pieces of art. I look forward to Nintendo's promised updates which are to include drawing lessons. If you enjoy drawing pics onto the Miiverse, this cheap app is for you.

Assassin's Creed III8
Sep 19, 2013
ACIII is a good game with the potential to be a great game. Aspects such as combat and the story's setting are fun and intriguing, yet other aspects such as the open-world concept and controls are flawed. While visiting historic Boston is a treat, playing missions in the modern world is far less interesting. I found the characters interesting, but I felt no connection to the modern world crew. Stealth missions can be entertaining while blending-in with ordinary citizens, but it's not always easy to determine whether you're under cover or not. I think this game is worthy of a playthrough especially at a discounted price on any console; and given the WiiU's thin library, this is probably one of the best games available on the Nintendo console.

PixelJunk Monsters9

Tower defense done right. This fun little downloadable will keep your hands on the controller for hours upon hours. There is a perfect balance of difficulty, with the added challenge of perfecting each level (a worthy reward awaits you for perfecting every level). You can sit and enjoy this game on a relaxing afternoon, but still embrace those frantic moments of chaos. I found very few faults/complaints with Monsters; PixelJunk converted me into a tower defense fan

Mario Kart 78
Aug 21, 2013
MK7 is the best handheld Mario Kart game yet. Heck, it is the best handheld racer ever released. The online mode is the best we've seen in a Mario Kart game (although there is potential to be much better) and the gameplay is as tight as ever. My only gripe with MK7 is the fact that it is on a handheld. I love the Mario Kart series, but that is due to its local multi-player. Because it isn't easy to gather a group of friends who all own a 3ds and MK7 and are all available to play, my favorite aspect of MK is removed. However, if you enjoyed any handheld MK games of the past, you are sure to enjoy the new levels, and additions (underwater/skyglide) of MK7.

Kid Icarus: Uprising8
Aug 21, 2013
Nintendo chose the perfect franchise to utilize the arcade shooter touch-screen gameplay of Uprising. It is a fairly original experience with loads of amount of content and unlockables. The ranging difficulty levels and online modes will also get you to come back for more. There is a large learning curve to the control scheme, but once you get past that, Kid Icarus Uprising has a lot of entertainment to offer.

Nintendo Land8
Aug 19, 2013
Although there are enjoyable mini-games for single players, it is the multi-player in NintendoLand that will keep gamers playing. Casual and hardcore gamers alike will find an enjoyable experience. Most mini-games isolate one player with the gamepad as all others need a strategy and communicate to overcome any advantage the gamepad player has. Comparable high-scores against other Mii characters on your console is a nice touch, but missing online leaderboards was a missed opportunity.

Pikmin 39
Aug 19, 2013
Probably the first must-own game on the Wii U. Pikmin 3 is by far the best game in the series. The use of 3 main characters, additional depth in battle strategy, new pikmin types, and focus on time/sunset, have combined to make this worthy experience of any gamer's time. I haven't even tried the acclaimed bingo battles, but Wii U owners can finally justify their console purchase.

New Super Luigi U8
Jul 15, 2013
There are few DLC offerings worth your time re-visiting the original title. New Super Luigi U's all new levels are as enjoyable as the original. The small changes in Luigi's controls and lessened time expiration add an interesting variation to the New formula. This DLC is worth $20 to anyone who enjoys Super Mario side-scrolling platforming.

Portal 29
Apr 24, 2013
Portal 2 is a first-person puzzler. I had my doubts because I thought the view/camera would limit the gamer's ability to solve the puzzles. I've also never enjoyed elements of first-person games other than the shooting parts. Portal 2 puts all concerns to rest as it is one of the best games of the year. The presentation/story is great with some of the funniest video-game writing I've ever heard. The puzzles are smart, but not to the extent where you're so stuck you have to look up answers online. The puzzles are challenging enough to make the gamer feel a strong sense of reward when the "ah-ha!" moment forms. If you like puzzles in your games, you owe it to yourself to play Portal 2.

Little Inferno6
Apr 4, 2013
I like the style of the characters and the way the story is revealed to the player, but the actual gameplay of Little Inferno isn't much at all. Simply, you select items from a catalog, literally wait a few minutes as they become available, and then you watch them burn for a few seconds. I appreciate the game-creator's story and message, but I can't recommend this type of game to everyone.

Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition7
Apr 4, 2013
Switch Force is a puzzler-platformer first, and an action game second if at all. At first was disappointed as I expected a MegaMan-like game, but after accepting Might Switch Force for what it is, I began to enjoy it. It is fun and easy to pick up and play. You can beat each level in about a minute (if you're extremely good), but they will take longer on your first play through. For the price, and the ability to play the game during a free minute, it's a safe purchase for side-scrolling fans.

Fire Emblem: Awakening10
Mar 22, 2013
Awakening is my first game in the Fire Emblem series. I love the emphasis on strategy in this RPG adventure. The permanent death feature can be upsetting when you lose a character after a lots of leveling and relationship building, but it's one of Fire Emblem's best feature because it makes battle strategy very crucial. You must decide whether your strongest soldier can hold a line, or whether to risk a weak character in a pinnacle portion of a battle. I strongly recommend that all non-beginner gamers keep the feature on. Overall, if you like RPGs and/or strategy games, do yourself a favor and play this game!

New Super Mario Bros. U9
Mar 20, 2013
I love that Nintendo still releases side-scrolling Mario games. Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of my favorite games, and I still enjoy playing its style of gaming. New Super Mario Bros. U takes on the traditional formula with added HD graphics, a new power-up, challenge modes, and most importantly all-new levels. Nintendo's focus was on gameplay and it hit the nail on the head. First and foremost it is important to note that NSMBU is an extremely fun game. The storyline is essentially non-existent, the graphics are improved but nothing to rave about, and the challenge modes are a nice addition, but this game prides itself on side-scrolling goodness and Nintendo does it best. Simply, if you like side-scrolling platforming, you'll love NSMBU as it perfectly executes the genre.
