Had a lot of fun with it. It has been improving since launch through patching and looks like it will continue to do so with the future plans.

Galactic Civilizations III: Mercenaries2
May 31, 2017
Pretty underwhelming expansion. Really doesn't feel like it is moving the game forward, which is what you want an expansion to do. Its main feature, mercenaries often seem pointless and the way they are done gives the very limit spans of usefulness (if at all).

Galactic Civilizations III6
May 31, 2017
GC3 is pretty run of the mill. It only has one real stand out feature: the cosmetic ship designer. You can spend hours in it making ships to fill out your fleet. However, that means nothing in terms of gameplay as what a ship looks like doesn't matter. The fanciest battleship at the base level is just as good as a cube. On the gameplay, well it is...adequate. Nothing really special or amazing about it, particularly when you compare it to the other 4Xs that have come out. It is also a shame that where it is different (the ship designer) the devs have put zero effort into improving it.

Galactic Civilizations III: Crusade3

Is the expansion ambitious? Probably. But that doesn't matter when it is released in such a poor state. CTD and stuck turns are far too frequent to be acceptable. Best to give this 6 - 12 months before considering to jump in.

Dragon Age: Inquisition7
Nov 29, 2014
There is a lot to like about Dragon Age Inquisition. It has a big sprawling world (well, it's got a bunch of large contained regions rather than a single world), its got interesting and well voiced characters, and a pretty decent story (not sure if it is as good as Origins or not still). Unfortunately it is a buggy world. There's a lot of animation clipping, companions in your base sometimes don't appear and you have to leave the area and return for them to show up, there are a host of bugged quests ranging from missing NPCs (reloading and doing it again generally works) to more mysterious quests that simply won't clear for no apparent reason. It also has DirectX issues and if you're unlucky you can suffer numerous CTDs. However, the worst bug is related to a returning character who depending on your decision regarding them can CHANGE your character's voice. There is nothing more immersion breaking then after 15 hrs of playing the game to suddenly have your character's voice change. This bug is probably the most damning and 10 days after the game's release it has still to be fixed. A lot of people complain about the PC controls, I didn't find them too bad. The tactical combat is pretty poorly done. You don't really have much in the way of options to control your AI companions and the camera doesn't zoom out nearly far enough. Combat isn't too bad, it is fun and colourful and people can argue it's shallow, but for the most part I found it fun enough. If your a hardcore RPGer you'll probably be very disappointed with the very limited skill trees. DAI is definitely no Path of Exiles when it comes to giving players choice and scope in leveling and building a character, but it's adequate. All in all, DAI is a good game. I would really like to give it an 8 or 9 out of 10. However, at this stage given the number of bugs (particularly the voice change bug) I'm going to give it a more modest 7.

XCOM: Enemy Within Expansion8
Nov 18, 2013
Enemy Within adds a lot of good things to the game. *The new MEC class and augmenting soldiers gives you a wider range on upgrading your soldiers making them more unique in ability and performance instead of simply just equipping everyone with the same tech lvl armour or weapons. *There is a much greater variety of maps. You don't repeat the same maps as frequently any more, particularly noticeable for UFO shoot downs since you're not always in the same spooky forest anymore. *More customisation for soldiers is fun. In terms of gameplay it offers nothing, but its a fun little distraction to adjust how your soldiers look. The addition of languages is also nice. You could argue for more languages and maybe even English accents (Eng, US, Aust, etc), but again not important to gameplay, but cosmetic stuff. However, there are some things that prevent me giving it a ten. * Power creep: While the new classes and super-humans are great it does make the game a bit easier as you can get quite power troops quite early. This isn't immediately countered by the aliens as the introduction to new stronger enemies is more of less staggered the same as EU. Chryssalids are much less scary if you can one shot them with a MEC's kinetic strike. * Price: Of the two points I've taking off this I weight less than the power creep above, but it is still a factor. In my view it is overpriced for what you get, that at least 20% should be knocked off the price. Not great value for money, but if I was overly concerned about it I'd never buy any game until at least its 6 months old and the price starts to drop. On the bug side I've only had one and that was on the release day where I went to mission control and it zoomed me in too close and got stuck. Haven't had it happen since then though so I've had a very stable experience. Overall, the expansion does what it should. It expands the game in a overall enjoyable manner so that it makes it worth your time to return to it.

Mass Effect 38
Mar 15, 2012
I must have played a different game from the majority of reviewers here because I found it a highly enjoyable experience. Not going into the endings but it was perfect wrap up for who my Shepherd was and on the way to it I enjoyed reconnecting with old friends. As with Mass Effect people die and while I'm sure I limited it as much as I could the deaths that were locked in made me feel something, which is how it should be. I see a lot of complaints about unanswered questions and while I do have questions, enough was answered for now. I don't need every single thing spelled out for me, plus it leaves stuff for the future. Shepherd's story might be over, but the Mass Effect galaxy doesn't have to be and I hope to see much from ME in the future. It looks good, I didn't encounter any major bugs or crashes, I enjoyed it, so I'm quite happy to give it a very good score.

Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter2

The only reason to buy the game in this state is to take part in a paid beta, but if you want to buy a game to enjoy and play with few problems than don't buy this game. It has many issues and is very unstable, not to mention that it has incomplete features. The current release is pretty much unacceptable for a "released" game. The fault for this lies with the developer, not the publisher. The developer is the one who comes up with the ideas and has to realise them and they have to do it within an agreed upon period, so given the game is so broken and incomplete the blame has to be squarely on the Kerberos. It's clear they aimed far too high for either their skill or manpower (or a combo) to meet within the development period. However, most disappointing was that they kept fans in the dark about the state of the game, which is made worse by the fact several of those who worked on the game were highly active with the community. You can also put some blame on the publisher for not saying anything either and while it is easy to say they should have given Kerberos more time, they can only be expected to sink so much money without a return into a project. All in all the release by both parties should have been better handled. The game is been patched with the aim of making it work, but it will take some time. Best plan would be to wait 6 - 12 months and have another look at the game unless as I said, you wanted to take part in a beta test. So far for me this game has not been worth its price. You can see the potential in the game, but I didn't buy the game to look at it and imagine the cool things it could do so I can't give it anything outside of the red zone.
