Mary Poppins Returns3

Bwugh. What a chore to sit through. Full disclosure: not really a fan of the original either. But at least the original had, you know, some originality. This is an incredibly dull, trite film that had me bored to tears. The musical choices were awful, the plot was tedious and predictable. Just a very poor film. Couldn't they have tried to jazz it up a little. Eight seconds of ONE song, rapped by Lin Manuel Miranda almost had me perk up. At least the animation sequence of the movie was kind of nice; also nice to have a bit of a return to 2D animation. Blunt and Whishaw are fine, but I expect better of them. What a disappointment, even for someone who had low expectations going in.

An excellent film. Is it a more idyllic vision of the 60's than the reality of that time? Quite undoubtedly. However, that doesn't change the effectiveness of the story. Sometimes we need a little bit of idealism. Even if the film is sometimes timid in it's portrayal of racism in the deep south. But this movie isn't intended to be torture porn or a cautionary picture of the world, it's a film about how we as people can be better and how we can overcome our differences. Director Peter Farrelly brings humor to the film, making it more mirthful than I had expected, but it always comes from the characters naturally and feels right. It's often witty and clever and maybe even a little saccharine, but this is a great film with outstanding performances by Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali.

The Kid Who Would Be King7

The Kid Who Would Be King, is a film that is certainly not without flaws. And my grade of it is honestly probably based on a bit of a curve. But I couldn't help but enjoy it. Despite a noticeable lull around the end of the second act, the movie for the most part tapped into the childlike side of myself, I feel that I would have really liked this movie as a middle-schooler. As it stands though, I still enjoyed it enough. It reminded me of how Arthurian myth can be fun; which is something a movie hasn't done in a long time for me. However, the villain, Morgana, is one of the least developed villains I've seen in a while. Her character motivations matching, or BARELY surpassing in effectiveness, the motivations of the villain Steppenwolf from Justice League (2017). But I must admit, I got a kick out of seeing the mythology brought to the modern day, and experiencing it with the kids of the film. The movie also suffers from being quite predictable. Anyone who's seen three movies in their life can guess the plot as it trods along. The CGI work isn't great, and also isn't very creative. There's exactly two designs, the generic CG army of flaming undead, and Morgan as a Percy Jackson monster looking harpy thing. It's... not great. But the movie also has a good message for kids and is fairly effective at delivering it. All in all, not a bad movie, in fact a pretty good one if you can tap into that childlike part of yourself and/or have an affinity for Arthurian legend.

My Neighbor Totoro4

The film certainly has a lot of positives within it. It does a good job of establishing the characters as relatable, in a way that a lot of animated films never do. The imagination and the joy of youth really does come through in the presence of the two girls. However, the movie probably spends too much time with them in its lackadaisical state and not enough time on story. Half an hour into the film, the novelty of the movies encapsulation of youthfulness and subtly implied magical world-building, start to wear thin. You may find yourself questioning where the film is going. Be prepared to wait nearly another hour wondering, as this film is very light on plot. At the end of the film it does pull out everything it can to provide an emotional and satisfying conclusion, and succeeds quite well at doing so in fact. But I'm not sure the meandering journey was quite worth the destination. The movie could have probably been helped by a harsher edit; a good twenty minutes or so cut from the movie might have helped the pacing. Also, worth mentioning is that the music is quite good, if not sometimes a little elevator music-y. The Totoro theme that plays over the credits is quite catchy.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice0

A truly terrible movie. If I'm being honest, objectively, this isn't the worst movie I've ever seen. Heck, it isn't even the worst Zack Snyder film I've ever seen; that honor remains reserved for **** Punch of course. But I have never had a film break me like this one did. And I hope I never see another film that I have such intense and genuine hatred for, as I do this one. This is a movie that was not only an offense as a film; but to someone who is a genuine, and huge fan of these characters, this was a travesty and an iniquity of a movie. To see beloved children's characters twisted into monstrosities, and literally turned into the antithesis of what they have always been, was a real heart-breaker. I weep for myself, the fans of these characters, the general public who has always shown love for these characters, and most of all for the kids, who will grow up thinking this, this outrage is what Batman and Superman, and the DC universe is all about. Very important personal sidenote: To see Batman, a man who has always vowed to never take a life, no matter how evil the person may be, become a mass murdering serial killer was unforgivable.

The Wraith3

A very terrible 80's movie. If you have questions while watching this movie, and you will; prepare to have none of them answered. Despite the nonsensical nature of the plot, the "twist," if it can even be called such, or was even intended as such, can be seen coming a mile away. Is this movie science-fiction or mystical? I don't know, and neither do the people who made it. It's a movie where no one acts like a human being has ever acted. Most of the characters that the film focuses on seem to be genuinely sociopathic and/or mentally challenged. And they speak like only a terrible screenwriter can imagine people speak. The movie only has about three locations. And it has about four actual race scenes, none of which are justified in any real way. Which might be somewhat forgivable if they were any good. Which they are not. The first one is the most unique, but is incomprehensible due to it taking place at night. The final three are also incomprehensible in their own way, and are exceedingly repetitive; where two cars race down an empty street (except for the final race), on a barren road in the desert, while very far behind them they are being pursued by approximately two police cars. The race scenes consist of very poorly edited together sequences of repetitious back and forth lead taking and lead losing. Before inevitably every race ends in the exact same predictable way. Certain elements are introduced in the film and were either forgotten about or never thought about until the film was almost over, either that or the plot elements are just incredibly incompetently handled. While many elements that were introduced remain unexplained entirely, such as the, how of the Wraith, and the glowing, vanishing (and reappearing) braces. Ultimately, the movie barely manages to be mildly entertaining, but at least it's short, at only approx. 90 min. I'd probably recommend wasting you're time on something else. Even limiting yourself to the realm of Charlie Sheen movies, there are many better options out there. As he remains quite underutilized in this film.
