This is a series so full of surprises, Easter eggs and references that it’s a delight to know you’ll be able to enjoy them in all their glory. But here’s what I can tell you: it’s fantastic. ... Series four is certainly a change in tone and even genre, but it’s all the better for it.

To its credit, the lingering pace doesn’t translate to any boring moments. Stranger Things still injects an enthralling backstory into its well-established universe. It’s an indication that the final two episodes of Volume 2 (dropping on July 1), despite its movie length, will only elevate season four.

Stranger Things is bigger, older, somewhat sadder – and as lovable as ever.

Amid the show’s ballooning scale and scope, Stranger Things finds an unexpected anchor not in its ensemble of fan favorites but in its latest villain: a supernatural serial killer dubbed Vecna after—what else?—a Dungeons and Dragons character. Vecna resides in the Upside Down, but unlike previous visitors, he’s humanlike, with a voice, a face, and, most chilling of all, a worldview.

The fourth season of Stranger Things is the biggest, scariest, most ambitious Stranger Things season yet. It’s also the least charming, least funny and least inventive season yet, which doesn’t mean that those elements are wholly lacking, just that the effort to concentrate on moments of human relatability often gets overwhelmed by the attempts at scale.

It’s nice to have Stranger Things back, period, especially the Hawkins-based parts. But it would be nicer without having to wade through everything else to get to the scenes that work best.

Season 4 feels like it’s been designed to produce good data rather than quality entertainment. The algorithm once heralded for so much of Netflix’s success and derided for ignoring the human factor certainly feels present here, as any remaining strangeness gets usurped by formula.

This is the first season that I haven’t really enjoyed generally throughout, certainly not as much as the others. It goes on for far too long and feels like a slog at times. It also feels a little directionless as each group has their storyline but they take the entire season to really go anywhere. The Soviet Union storyline stands out as the least interesting. They got even older but the characters are the same which often makes it feel like the original cast feel ten years out of place. It really feels longer than the previous seasons put together and I admit I lost focus way more than previous seasons. Having said that there are some genuinely gripping moments. Hopper was one of my favourite characters and he is so serious which is a shame. Suzy on the roof is a really fake looking special effect, really ruined the scene. In fact some of the special effects seem to be a lower quality compared to the previous seasons, maybe because there are too many but most are good and some really impressive like them looking at each other through the upside. Sometimes I couldn't follow what was going on and I was concentrating. Maybe because I was focusing on motivations which didn't really make sense. Sound design and music is excellent. Really excellent! The fight choreography is average but didn't really matter. The good bits are good, so good! Shame there are slow bits and less interesting storylines. I think the whole season could be an hour or two shorter without affecting anything overall. Much as I'm picking holes I did really enjoy watching it. Hopper looks terrible because he lost weight which fits his character journey. Robin looks terrible because she lost weight probably because she’s been doing drugs and they never bothered explaining it. The last episode is so long, even when you think it’s over there’s like another 40 minutes. The emotional moments lacked impact because they didn't feel real. Some of the sound design and effects towards the end felt rushed. Easily my least favourite season. The ending is certainly a low point of the entire series. I can't imagine how old and out of place they'll look in the next season.

Better than Season 3, not as good as Seasons 1 & 2. Season 4 is dragged out, overblown, confused, and filled with way too much sobbing and heart-to-hearts. Kids don't talk so openly or eloquently about their emotions then or now. But there were some good moments, especially with 11, and a nice surprise or two. So it wasn't all bad.

Part 2 ruined Season 4 for me. I never anticipated how good Part 1 turned out to be. It was fantastic, well-paced, and surprising. But part 2 went back to the predictable tropes just to sell the next season.
