If The Stand itself isn’t the perfect King adaptation, that doesn’t really matter, because perfection isn’t what a pop-culture omnivore like King aims for anyway. He’s after glorious excess, and The Stand has that in spades.

Stephen King's The Stand is a riveting TV movie / miniseries and a real achievement in King's novel adaptation to the screen. The America's Lord of the Rings set in a realistic post apocalyptic world devasted by a lethal virus. Incredible performance from renowned actors like Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, Corin Nemec, Ed Harris or even Kathy Bates in a great cameo. All packed with realistic production design and a mesmerizing original score from composer W.G. Snuffy Walden. The Stand is also the unofficial basis to the hit comic book TV adaptation of The Walking Dead from die-hard King fan Frank Darabont. The pilot scene with Grimes escape from the hospital is nearly the same as Stuart Redman's hospital escape from The Stand as an exemple. Deserve to be seen at any price.

But score a couple of solid hits for the good folks. Ray Walston is crustily effective as an elderly artist. And in the movie's most tender relationship, Rob Lowe, whose character can neither hear nor speak, and Bill Fagerbakke, as a mildly retarded Li'l Abner-type country boy, are outstanding.

The Stand is far superior to other miniseries based on King books -- IT and The Tommyknockers -- but at twice their lengths, it's a demanding, sometimes confounding epic. The first six hours unfold, oh so slowly, as an elaborate prelude to the rousing final two hours. Be prepared not to be scared, though. Or even to be stimulated. The Stand is for viewers with time on their hands. Lots of it. And for viewers with patience. Lots of it...Despite its creepshow pretensions, much of it is flat-out dull.

It looks like the world is ending, leading to final battle between good and evil, yet people don't express any stronger emotions. No fear of devil, no fear of God, no hope for heaven... They just live like almost nothing major happened. I hate histerical acting, that plague modern movies, but this is the other extreme. Also the music while not bad, doesn't fit the whole situation at all, mostly resembling me either family, or action movie other times. Speaking about action scenes... I felt embarrassed at times.
