While "For All Mankind" showed love and passion for US space program, StarCity shows absolute hatred and lack of knowledge of Soviet one.

The Apple series “For All Mankind” explored the space race from America’s POV, while this spinoff looks at the same time period as if Russia had won. I never watched the original, so this is all new. It starts as they land the first person on the moon and expands from there (in a Communist twist it’s a woman). Being that it’s Soviet Russia, there’s lots of paranoia and betrayals, which is the other primary theme of the series. The cast is uniformly excellent (despite the British accents) and the writing is intelligent and involving. The personal interactions and the brave risks slowly pull you in, while there are some riveting moments in space. This is a dark take on science with the threat of authoritarianism and arrest continually looming. The series presents an alternate history from a fascinating paranoid perspective. C’est le même problème qu’avec For All Mankind, l’autre série somnifère dont elle est dérivée, à savoir que Star City prodigue sans s’arrêter une incrédulité à peu près totale sur tous les plans et dans tous les domaines. Certes, il s’agit d’une uchronie mais tout de même… La raison principale est bien sûr toujours la même : satisfaire l’agenda woke à tout prix, quitte à sabrer tout le reste… mais alors tant qu’à faire, pourquoi ne pas en avoir fait directement un matriarcat dès le début ? parce que se démener ainsi, simplement pour faire marcher une cocotte sur la lune, c’est tout à fait improbable et aberrant vu que la série (comme l’autre bien sûr) est profondément ancrée dans les années 60. De toute façon, la série est déjà quasiment un matriarcat à part entière, puisque tous les rôles importants (à part l’ingénieur en chef…) sont tenus par des femmes. Oui, ça commence à faire beaucoup, un petit peu quand même, surtout lorsqu’elles sont de surcroît bien moches également, histoire de cocher encore une case dans leur agenda wokiste, sans compter la clause DEI obligatoire, cela va sans dire. Enfin, le rythme reste très, très lent et propice à l’endormissement anticipé… on ne s’attendait pas à autant de lenteurs parmi ces épisodes d’une heure, en effet : ça brasse du vide, du vide vaguement interstellaire sans arrêt : une série aberrante et très soporifique !

The acting is excellent. Each lead performer brings their own nuance and subtlety. One of the strengths of each key performance is how each major character has their own motivations for their actions. Those motivations are rarely obvious and reward a second season.

Like it or not, Star City has to be compared to its sister show "For all Mankind". Both are average when it comes to authenticity and detail, both space parts of the plot are equally (un)realistic, etc. Acting is better in Star City and so it overall atmosphere. BUT, where this thing really fails is such a biased and insulting portrait of Soviet Union, no doubt driven by the current political situation. That much of idiotic propaganda made me quiet a few times, but I came back for space technology bits. If this show left daily politiciking out of it, it would have been much better than "For all Mankind". The simplistic "Americans good - Russians bad" approach is an insult to viewers' intelligence,

One of the best shows on TV. It can be a slow burn at times, but the characterization and plot are next level. If you are looking for espionage, mystery, and intense drama, this is the show for you. Not a lot out there for adults who think, so this was a pleasant surprise.

I'm two episodes in, and barely hanging on. The premise of the alternate history and the nuanced storytelling is keeping me interested. As long as the plot deepens, I will probably keep watching. What I don't like is the very dark portrayal of everything Soviet. It feels like an American's point of view rather than a Russian's. And why do so many of the characters speak with British accents? Those two things make the show feel inauthentic.

The idea is great, but the execution is bad. Tried watching it - very boring The first 5 minutes of the series were exciting and interesting, but that's it. After that it gets into dull filler details, drama, dialogues and relationships. The only upside is that unlike with Chernobyl - the cast looks more like soviets, and not generic californian corporate suits.
